Use the instructions for your exact watch model before moving its crown or pressing a corrector. A common method is to align the display to a full moon, count the days since that full moon, then advance the indicator by that number of days. But controls, setting order, and safe-adjustment restrictions vary by watch and caliber, so this method is an example—not a universal procedure.

Identify the watch and find its manual

Use only the crown position, corrector, and tool specified in that guide. Do not press a corrector with a generic object or assume a procedure for another watch applies to yours. If the manual is unclear—or the watch has multiple celestial or calendar indications—follow its complete sequence or ask the manufacturer or a qualified service center for help.

Some watches restrict calendar adjustments during part of the day. For the cited Jaeger-LeCoultre Duomètre Quantième Lunaire, the manual warns against correcting the date between 10 p.m. and 3 a.m., when that watch’s automatic date-change mechanism is active. This restriction is specific to that model; do not treat it as a rule for every moon-phase watch. Check your own manual before making any correction.

The common reference method
Some manufacturers use the last full moon as the reference point: set the display to a full moon, count the elapsed days, then advance the indicator by that many days. The exact controls and counting instructions still depend on the watch.
Patek Philippe’s general example
Patek Philippe instructs owners to advance the lunar disk until the moon is centered in the aperture in its full form, then count the days since the last full moon—including the setting day—and press the corrector that number of times. Different watches use different controls
On the Audemars Piguet Code 11.59 with Caliber 7138, the online guide specifies crown position B’: turn counterclockwise to a full moon, then advance for the days since the last full moon. For the Jaeger-LeCoultre Duomètre Quantième Lunaire, the manual places the moon-phase corrector in the horn gap at 12 o’clock and says to use the supplied corrector. Each press moves the disc forward one day. Its control location and tool requirement are model-specific: Jaeger-LeCoultre setting instructions.

A moon-phase display represents the lunar cycle, but the accuracy of its mechanism determines how often it needs correction. Vacheron Constantin says its high-precision moon-phase displays require manual adjustment once every 122 years, while its simple versions require adjustment once every three years. When the watch has multiple celestial indications
Some advanced watches show more than one moon or sky indication and require a sequence of separate corrections. Patek Philippe’s instructions for the Star Caliber 2000 and Sky Moon Tourbillon describe model-specific methods for their multiple indications.
