There is no single price for owning a luxury watch. To estimate your own cost, start with the current price of the exact model in your market, then add its likely service costs, any insurance premium, and applicable parts or care expenses over the period you plan to keep it. Brand, movement, complications, location, and the watch’s condition can all change the total.
What goes into the cost of owning a luxury watch?
Set an ownership period—such as five or ten years—and build an estimate from the costs that apply to your watch. These are expenses to budget, not a market-wide average: no defensible general total for luxury-watch ownership is established by the available manufacturer and provider prices.

- Purchase: the current price of the exact reference in your region and through your intended purchase channel.
- Service: the maker’s guidance or a service estimate for that reference and its condition. Taxes, replacement parts, and optional work may be excluded from published figures.
- Insurance: a personalized quote based on the insured value, location, and deductible, if you choose to insure the watch.
- Other maintenance: any applicable strap, case, bracelet, or component work not included in the service estimate.
Use the watch’s current price and a personalized insurance quote for your own calculation. Treat future resale value or appreciation as uncertain rather than as a guaranteed reduction in ownership cost.

“Luxury watch” covers watches with very different prices, movements, and complications. Rolex says suggested retail prices for many models appear on its regional sites and directs customers to Official Rolex Jewelers for specific model prices and availability; it does not publish a representative price range for luxury watches as a whole. How often will a luxury watch need service?
There is no service interval supported for every luxury watch. Follow the guidance for your model rather than applying a single schedule to all watches. CHANEL recommends an examination every five years, while Rolex describes an evaluation before quoting. Jaeger-LeCoultre says service price depends on the watch’s complexity. Insurance is optional, but can be a recurring ownership expense. Jewelers Mutual says its watch-insurance rates begin at 1–2% of a watch’s value annually; the provider says actual rates depend on insured value, deductible, and location. This is one provider’s guidance, not an industry-wide rate or guaranteed quote. Jewelers Mutual watch insurance
For an estimate, request a quote using the watch’s current insured or appraised value, your location, and the deductible you are considering. Jewelers Mutual recommends having the watch appraised at least every two years. Jewelers Mutual watch insurance

Warranty is not insurance
A manufacturer’s guarantee and an insurance policy address different risks. Rolex’s five-year guarantee excludes, among other things, accidental damage and mishandling. Jewelers Mutual distinguishes coverage for loss, theft, and accidental damage from a manufacturer warranty. Check the terms of the specific guarantee and policy rather than assuming one replaces the other. Rolex guarantee information Jewelers Mutual watch insurance
How to estimate your own ownership cost
- Choose a period. Decide whether you want a five-year, ten-year, or other estimate.
- Find the exact purchase price. Check the maker’s regional information or an authorized retailer for the reference and market you intend to buy in. Availability and model pricing can vary.
- Ask about service for that reference. Use the maker or an authorized service provider. Confirm the service category, whether inspection is required, and what taxes, parts, and optional work are excluded.
- Get an insurance quote, if needed. Provide the watch’s current insured value, your location, and the deductible you prefer. Do not treat a percentage published by one insurer as a guaranteed rate.
- Add applicable maintenance. Include likely strap, case, bracelet, or replacement-component expenses only where relevant, and check whether they are already included in the service estimate.
- Keep uncertain resale value separate. Do not subtract a projected resale price or appreciation as though it were assured.
The result is a personal budget rather than a universal ownership price. Revisit it if the watch’s condition, service quote, insured value, or location changes.
