There is no single service interval for every mechanical watch: follow the guidance for its exact model and movement. Manufacturer recommendations in the sources below range from about three years to approximately ten, with use and environment affecting timing. A water-resistance check is a separate maintenance question, not a substitute for a complete service.
How often should you service a mechanical watch?
Use the maker’s current instructions for your specific watch. The intervals below are manufacturer recommendations with different wording and scope—not a universal schedule or evidence that one brand’s interval applies to another.

| Grand Seiko | Within three to four years from purchase | The cited 9S25 instructions recommend an overhaul for long-term use. Check the instructions for your actual calibre. Grand Seiko 9S25 instructions. |
| OMEGA | Every five to eight years | OMEGA’s Hong Kong service page recommends a complete service; it says frequency depends on use and environment. OMEGA service guidance. |
| Rolex | Approximately every ten years | Rolex’s Australian FAQ qualifies this by model and real-life usage. Rolex Australian FAQ. |
These figures come from manufacturer pages and instructions whose publication dates are not stated here. They are not comparative independent findings establishing an optimal interval for all mechanical watches. The model, movement, type of service described, and the watch’s use and environment all matter.

What can change the timing?
Model and service scope
A recommendation for an overhaul may not describe exactly the same work as a recommendation for examination, cleaning, and oiling where needed. Confirm what the maker means by service for your model and calibre rather than choosing an interval based only on another watch’s brand or age.

Use and environment
Seiko says climate and individual care affect service frequency. OMEGA likewise cites use and environment; Rolex says its timing depends on model and real-life usage. Follow the relevant maker’s guidance if your watch sees conditions that differ from ordinary use.
When should you arrange an assessment?
Do not wait for the calendar interval if the watch stops or its timekeeping changes noticeably. Seiko explains that aged lubricant and worn movement parts can cause time loss or stopping. Those symptoms warrant assessment by a qualified watchmaker or the brand’s authorized service channel; they are not a diagnosis or a universal threshold for service.

Seiko also warns that an accidental shock can deform parts and affect water resistance. If a watch has taken a significant shock, ask a qualified professional or the manufacturer’s service channel whether it should be inspected, especially before relying on it in water.

Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteIs a water-resistance check the same as a service?
No. A complete mechanical service addresses the movement and related components; a water-resistance check tests whether the watch can resist water under the relevant conditions. Seals can age, and shocks can affect parts, so water resistance should not be assumed permanent.

OMEGA’s Hong Kong care guidance recommends checking water resistance once a year at an authorized service center. That is OMEGA’s recommendation, not a universal annual rule for every brand. If you plan to expose a watch to water and its resistance has not been checked recently—or it has suffered a shock—ask the manufacturer or a qualified professional about testing before relying on it. What should you expect from professional service?
Processes vary by provider and watch. Rolex describes an initial watchmaker assessment and estimate; after approval, its process includes separate handling of the movement, case, and bracelet, replacement of seals, technical and aesthetic checks, precision measurement and adjustment, and pressure testing. Rolex says its completed service carries an international two-year guarantee covering replacement parts and labor. These are Rolex’s stated procedure and terms, not a guarantee of what another provider offers. Rolex servicing procedure.
Before authorizing work, consult the current instructions for your watch and ask the manufacturer-authorized service center or qualified watchmaker what the estimate includes: inspection, parts, water-resistance testing if relevant, and any service warranty. The cited manufacturer sources do not establish a general cost, turnaround, or outcome advantage for authorized service over independent watchmakers.
