Start with jeans that fit comfortably through the waist and seat, then choose the leg shape, hem and wash to suit your shoes and the occasion. Straight and relaxed cuts are versatile; a dark, clean wash and a neat shirt can make denim feel smart-casual, while distressed or heavily washed jeans read more casually.
How to choose a jeans fit
Jean labels are not a universal sizing standard: the same cut name can vary by brand and model. Use the size chart for the pair you are considering, and assess how it fits when you sit, walk and move—not just how it looks standing still. Check room through the seat and thighs, the rise at the waist, and whether the leg opening works with the shoes you wear most.

| Cut | Typical shape | Useful when |
|---|---|---|
| Straight | Leg opening is about the same width as the knee. | You want a versatile, balanced leg that works with casual shirts, T-shirts and knitwear. |
| Relaxed | A straight leg with more room through the fit. | You prefer extra ease through the seat and legs without a close-fitting silhouette. |
| Loose or baggy | More space through the legs; the exact shape varies by model. | You want a roomier, more casual look. Balance the volume with a deliberate, well-proportioned top. |
| Slim or skinny | Closer-fitting from the waist or hip through the leg, with the exact degree varying by cut. | You prefer a narrower silhouette; check that the fabric and fit remain comfortable when seated and moving. |
| Tapered | Narrows from the knee toward the ankle. | You want more room higher up with a narrower opening that can sit neatly over low-profile shoes. |
| Bootcut | Narrower at the knee and wider at the ankle. | You want a hem with room to fall over substantial shoes or boots. |
These are general distinctions, not guarantees about a particular brand’s pattern. For example, Levi’s lists the 501 Original as a straight fit and the 541 Athletic Taper as a style designed for athletic builds; these are examples, not universal fit benchmarks. Levi’s men’s jeans guide also describes stretch, non-stretch and selvedge denim as fabric options.

Rise and comfort
Rise is the distance from the crotch seam to the top of the waistband, and it affects where the jeans sit on your body. Choose a rise that stays comfortable when you sit and does not require constant adjustment. The right choice depends on the garment’s cut and your preference; try the actual pair rather than relying on the label alone.

Inseam and hem break
Compare inseam options and check where the hem lands with the shoes you plan to wear. A clean line usually means little excess fabric bunching at the ankle. A wider or bootcut leg needs enough length and room to fall naturally over the shoe; avoid excessive stacking if you want a neater finish.
Stretch and rigid denim
Stretch denim can allow more give, while non-stretch denim feels more structured. Neither is automatically better: prioritize comfort and the shape you want, and follow the care label. Selvedge refers to a type of denim construction, not a fit or a promise that a pair will suit everyone.

Match the jeans to shoes and outfit formality
For everyday casual outfits
Straight or relaxed jeans are adaptable with a T-shirt, casual button-up, knitwear or simple jacket. Keep the proportions intentional: if the jeans are oversized, choose a top that balances their volume rather than making every piece look accidentally too large.
For a smarter-casual look
A dark, clean wash with a neat or tucked-in shirt and restrained shoes can look more polished than distressed, very light or heavily washed denim. This is a styling approach, not a dress-code guarantee; follow the expectations of the place you are going. If the setting calls for formal business clothing, jeans may not be appropriate.

- Straight leg
- Heavy weight durable denim
Let the leg opening work with the shoe
- A narrower opening can sit cleanly over low-profile shoes.
- A wider or bootcut leg generally needs a shoe with enough visual weight and room for the hem to fall naturally.
- Check the finished outfit while standing and walking; a hem that catches on the shoe or piles up can disrupt the line.
How to care for denim
Levi’s customer service recommends turning denim inside out, closing zippers, washing cold on a gentle cycle with mild detergent, and air-drying whenever possible. It suggests washing denim after approximately every 10 wears and spot-cleaning minor stains with a damp cloth, soft brush and mild soap. That frequency is Levi’s guidance, not a universal rule: stains, work conditions and the garment’s care label may call for a different approach. See Levi’s denim care guidance.

Most Levi’s jeans are preshrunk and, according to the company, should experience little to no shrinkage when cared for as instructed. Its Shrink-to-Fit jeans are raw and not preshrunk, so sizing guidance depends on how the jeans will be washed and dried. Levi’s advises adding waist and inseam allowance for machine washing and drying, while recommending true size for an unwashed raw-denim experience. The amount of allowance is model- and size-specific; consult the exact product’s sizing and care instructions rather than applying one rule to all raw denim.
