Tournament officials publish a daily order of play that assigns matches to courts and gives some matches a specific start time or a “not before” time. Others are listed “to follow,” meaning they begin after the preceding match on that court ends. Court assignments depend on the event’s rules and practical scheduling needs; they are not determined by a universal formula based on rankings or round. Published plans can change, and a scheduled time is not always the time a match actually starts.
What decides whether a match is on a stadium or outside court?
Each day’s court assignments are part of the tournament’s order of play: the published list of matches scheduled for that day. A stadium or show court may be designated for featured matches, while other matches are assigned to outside courts. The exact criteria for a particular match are event-specific; the rules and sources available do not establish that a player’s ranking, nationality, round, crowd size, or television appeal alone determines the assignment.

Scheduling also has to account for the day’s sessions, the order of matches on each court, and whether a court is available when needed. Broadcast and operational input can be part of the process: a US Open account published September 3, 2015 described tournament and tour officials discussing possible broadcast-court matches with ESPN representatives. That is a historical example from one event, not a current procedure for every tournament.

How is the daily order of play made?
The ATP’s 2026 rulebook defines the daily order of play as the published summary of matches scheduled for a particular day. It identifies a scheduling committee and Supervisor oversight. Under ATP Tour provisions, the order should be released no later than 10 p.m. tournament local time after the committee determines it; once released, it may be changed only with the Supervisor’s approval. These are ATP rules, not a deadline that automatically applies to WTA events or Grand Slams. ATP 2026 Rulebook
Tour rules also should not be treated as a single rule set for all tennis. The Australian Open, Roland Garros, Wimbledon, and US Open are organized by their respective governing bodies—Wimbledon by a joint committee—and the Grand Slam Board implements and enforces the Grand Slam rulebook. Consult the relevant event’s current rules and order of play rather than assuming an ATP or WTA provision governs every tournament. ITF overview of Grand Slam governance · ITF rules and regulations
What do “to follow” and “not before” mean?
“To follow”
“To follow” means the match is scheduled after the preceding match on the same court. It does not promise a clock-time start: if the earlier match runs long or is interrupted, the next one waits.

“Not before”
“Not before” gives a match an earliest scheduled start time. Even if the preceding match finishes early, play cannot begin before the stated time. The ATP rulebook notes that a court may remain without a match until that time when a feature match is scheduled this way.

A stated time is still a plan
A clock time or “not before” time does not guarantee the match will start at that moment. A preceding match may run over, or play may be interrupted. A later match can therefore start after its listed time even when the order of play has not changed.
Why might a match move to another court?
A published order of play is not immutable. Under ATP rules, a Supervisor may approve changes, and the rulebook includes circumstances in which matches may be moved between courts or sessions, including certain key-match and interruption scenarios. The rules call for prompt communication of court changes to relevant stakeholders.
The WTA’s 2026 rulebook allows rescheduling in extenuating circumstances at the Supervisor’s discretion, in consultation with the Tournament Director. Weather and major scheduling interruptions are recognized in its provisions. A move can therefore reflect an operational need, but the reason and applicable authority depend on the event. Are doubles and televised courts scheduled differently?
The WTA 2026 rulebook recommends opening each day and night session with a doubles match and placing at least one doubles match per day on a televised court. It lists exceptions, including television obligations, weather or major scheduling interruptions, combined events, security issues, and unforeseen circumstances determined by the Supervisor. These are WTA provisions, not a universal requirement for all tours or Grand Slams. WTA 2026 Rulebook

How to check the latest court and start-time information
-
Open the tournament’s official order of play for the relevant date. Use the event’s current schedule rather than relying on an older listing or a schedule for another tournament.
-
Find the match and note its assigned court, session, and timing label: a stated time, “not before,” or “to follow.”
-
Check the official schedule again before heading to the court or planning around a later match. Approved changes and delays can affect the published assignment or practical start time.

Because each tournament sets its own procedures and schedules can change, the event’s official order of play is the best source for current assignments.
