A tennis match can move to an outside court because its original court is unavailable, needs preparation, or the tournament is trying to keep play on schedule. The change is made by tournament officials, and it can mean a different court, a delay, or a move to another day. Check the tournament’s latest order of play and official notices before heading to the court listed on an earlier schedule.
Why does a match move to an outside court?
A court change is an operational decision, not necessarily a sign that the match itself has changed. The original court may be unplayable or not ready, or officials may need to fit matches around weather-related disruption. A move can be to an exposed outside court, a roofed stadium, or an indoor court; it can also involve a change of day rather than just a new location.

Weather changes which courts are playable
Rain can stop play on exposed courts while a roofed court remains available. At the Rolex Shanghai Masters on 6 October 2024, heavy rain restricted play to the roofed Stadium Court. Matches scheduled for outside courts were cancelled for that day and rescheduled for Monday. In this case, the weather did not simply send every affected match to another court; the event changed the schedule.

A court may need more preparation
A match can be reassigned even when the immediate issue is court readiness rather than rain during play. For the Miami Open schedule on Wednesday, 18 March 2026, organizers said heavy rainfall in the lead-up had left limited areas of Stadium Court requiring additional preparation. All matches that day were assigned to outer courts, and Stadium Court was expected to open the next day. Read the tournament’s schedule statement via ATP Tour.
One schedule change can cause another
Some changes are knock-on effects. At the National Bank Open in Toronto in July 2025, rain delayed qualifying matches until Sunday. Because qualifiers could not be placed in the draw until those matches finished, Joao Fonseca’s first-round match moved from Sunday to Monday. That was a change of day, not merely a reassignment to another court. ATP’s Toronto schedule update.

Who decides, and can the published schedule change?
Officials authorized by the relevant tour and tournament make court and timing decisions. The 2025 WTA Rulebook says the Supervisor, in consultation with the Tournament Director, may delay a match or move it to another court, indoors or outdoors, regardless of surface. It also says the Referee, consulting the Supervisor, may move a match when circumstances require. For weather or bad light, the Referee consults the Supervisor about when play is halted. These are WTA rules; they should not be treated as identical procedures for every tour or event. 2025 WTA Rulebook, Section V.
The ATP’s 2025 rulebook defines the order of play as the day’s match schedule. Once published, changes require the Supervisor’s approval, and the schedule notes that “Any match on any court or session may be moved.” That means a printed or previously viewed court assignment is not a guarantee that the match will stay there. 2025 ATP Rulebook, Section VII.

What should spectators do when a court assignment changes?
- Check the latest order of play and official notices. Look again before leaving for the venue and before walking to the original court. Confirm both the court assignment and any timing update.
- Be ready for a delay or a new day. A change may keep the match on the same day, but weather can also lead to a suspension or cancellation for the day and a later rescheduling, as happened in Shanghai.
- Check the terms for your ticketed session. A stadium-to-outside-court move can affect what the session means for a ticket holder. For Miami’s 18 March 2026 change, organizers said stadium-ticket holders for Sessions 3 and 4 would be contacted about next steps; the statement did not specify a general refund, exchange, or access rule. Follow the event’s direct notice and ticket terms rather than assuming a particular remedy.
- Prepare for outdoor conditions if appropriate. If rain is forecast, consider what you will need outdoors, but check the venue’s prohibited-items policy before bringing an umbrella or other gear. Entry rules vary by event.
What the examples show—and what they do not
| Event and date | Reason or constraint | Schedule outcome | What was stated for spectators |
|---|---|---|---|
| Miami Open, 18 March 2026 | Heavy pre-event rainfall meant limited areas of Stadium Court needed additional preparation. | All matches that day moved to outer courts; Stadium Court was expected to open on 19 March. | Stadium-ticket holders for Sessions 3 and 4 would be contacted about next steps; no general remedy was stated. |
| Rolex Shanghai Masters, 6 October 2024 | Heavy rain restricted play to the roofed Stadium Court. | Outside-court matches were cancelled for the day and rescheduled for Monday. | The report described the schedule change, not a general ticket-access or refund policy. |
| Rolex Shanghai Masters, following two days of inclement weather, October 2024 | Organizers aimed to ease schedule pressure. | Four matches moved to indoor courts. | The report did not establish a universal ticket consequence. |
| National Bank Open, Toronto, July 2025 | Rain delayed qualifying matches; the main-draw placement depended on those results. | Joao Fonseca’s first-round match shifted from Sunday to Monday. | The report did not state a general ticket policy. |
These examples illustrate different causes and outcomes; they do not establish a universal policy for all tournaments. The official reports also do not provide a figure for how often matches move to outside courts.
