Tennis rankings are rolling points totals; tournament draws are the brackets that determine who can meet whom at one event. Rankings help decide tournament entry and seedings, but the exact points counted and draw rules depend on the tour, event and season.

How do tennis ranking points work?

Players earn points according to the tournament and the round they reach: a deeper run generally earns more, and larger events offer more points. The ATP and WTA both use rolling 52-week ranking systems, but their counting rules are not identical. As results enter the window and older results expire, a player’s total and ranking position can change.

Rankings have practical consequences: the ATP says they are used for tournament entry decisions and help determine seedings. The WTA says its computer ranking system began on November 3, 1975. ATP ranking explainer; WTA ranking explainer.

What does defending points mean in tennis?

“Defending points” is shorthand for how a rolling ranking works, not a special bonus for repeating a result. When an event is played again the following year, the previous year’s points fall out of the 52-week window and the new result is counted under the tour’s rules. A player who earns fewer points this time may see their total fall; a better result may raise it. The outcome also depends on the tour’s rules for which results count.

How are tennis tournament draws made?

A draw is the knockout bracket for one tournament. It sets each player’s first-round opponent and the possible route through later rounds, but it does not predict who will win: a projected opponent must first advance. Seeds are placed in designated slots to spread top-ranked players apart, while remaining places are filled by draw. In the ATP’s general explanation, the top two seeds are placed in opposite halves, so they can meet only in the final if both reach it. Specific placement and draw procedures are governed by the applicable event rules. ATP draw and ranking explainer.

What is a seed in tennis?

A seed is a player placed in a protected bracket position based on the ranking list used for that event. Seeding aims to keep the highest-ranked players from meeting in the earliest rounds; it does not guarantee a player will reach a particular later round. The number of seeds and their placement depend on the tournament’s rules.

Why draw size and byes vary

A draw sheet can have more slots than there are players, leaving some first-round byes. A bye means a player advances to the next round without playing that round. ATP’s 2025 competition rules illustrate why there is no single draw formula: they specify 32-place sheets for 28-player singles draws, 64-place sheets for 48- or 56-player draws, and a 128-place sheet for a 96-player draw.

Those ATP rules also vary bye allocation: the top four seeds receive byes in a 28-player main draw; every seed receives one in 48- or 96-player draws; and the top eight seeds receive one in a 56-player draw. These are ATP rulebook examples, not universal rules for all tours or events. Consult the governing rules for the specific tournament and season. 2025 ATP rulebook.

Who fills the remaining places?

After seeds and any byes are assigned, the remaining eligible players are placed into vacant draw positions. Entry routes affect who is eligible, but do not change what the bracket is: it remains the schedule of possible knockout matchups.

  • Qualifier: A player who earns a main-draw place by winning through qualifying.
  • Wild card: A player given direct entry by the tournament organizers.
  • Lucky loser: A player who loses in the final qualifying round but enters the main draw when a place opens, commonly after a withdrawal.

For ATP events, the explainer and competition rules describe these entry routes and how vacant positions are handled. ATP explainer; 2025 ATP rulebook.

How rankings and draws fit together

The ranking is a player’s rolling record for the tour’s ranking calculation; the draw is the bracket for a particular tournament. Ranking position can affect entry and seeding, which in turn affects a player’s starting slot and potential route. But rankings do not determine match results, and a draw’s projected later-round meetings happen only if the players win their earlier matches.
