The Angelus Chronographe Tachymètre x Monochrome is a hand-wound, 37 mm monopusher chronograph built on the A5000 movement, with a 30-minute counter and a listed 42-hour power reserve. Within Angelus’ own line-up it is closest to the Chronographe Télémètre: the same case size and counter length, with a tachymeter scale in place of a telemeter. Against other mechanical chronographs, the useful comparison runs along specific axes (scale, counters, case size and thickness, winding and pusher layout, movement architecture, water resistance, edition size and price) rather than a ranking. This article limits its side-by-side figures to Angelus models, because those are the only comparators whose published specifications could be checked. For unrelated brands, it shows which values to collect before drawing a conclusion.
Tachymeter or telemeter: read the scale first
The scale is the first thing to settle, because it determines what the watch is for. Monochrome describes the collaboration as replacing the original telemeter design with a tachymeter. Its tachymeter is graduated from 500 to 30 units and uses a double-coiled outer scale. A tachymeter measures average speed over a known distance, so it suits timing a kilometre or a mile. A telemeter measures distance from the delay between seeing an event and hearing it, which is why its scale is marked in kilometres.
Angelus’ official product page has a conflict. Its technical “Functions” block still lists “hours, minutes, 30-minute chronograph 20 km telemeter scale,” which describes the earlier design. The tachymeter description is the collaboration’s stated design, but the official block has not been reconciled with it. If the scale is decisive for you, ask Angelus or Monochrome to confirm in writing which scale appears on the production dial before you buy.

The pusher is integrated into the crown. A single press starts and stops timing, and the same control resets it. Because the movement is hand-wound, the watch has no automatic winding and needs to be wound by the crown before use.
Movement architecture
The A5000 is a hand-wound, integrated monopusher chronograph. Angelus’ descriptions of its other A5000 La Fabrique pieces, and the Fondation de la Haute Horlogerie (FHH) treatment of the closely related Télémètre, identify a column wheel and horizontal clutch. The FHH links that architecture to chronographs made from the 1940s through the 1970s. The collaboration’s own copy does not spell out the column wheel and clutch in those words, so the link relies on the shared calibre.
Monochrome traces the A5000’s lineage to the THA 045MC, developed by Techniques Horlogères Appliquées and used in the Cartier Tortue Monopoussoir. According to Monochrome, the rights to the movement are now held by Manufacture La Joux-Perret, which belongs to the same group as Angelus. This is the seller’s account of the movement’s history and has not been checked against independent corporate records.

Architecture describes how a movement is built and operated. It does not, on its own, tell you about accuracy, reliability or how easily the watch can be serviced. Those need separate evidence.
How it compares within Angelus
Angelus’ other La Fabrique models give the clearest like-for-like comparison. Where a value is not stated in the brand’s published material, the table says so.

Three pairings stand out:
- Collaboration versus Télémètre. Case size and counter length match, so the practical difference is the scale. The collaboration replaces the telemeter with a tachymeter, while the Télémètre keeps its peripheral 20 km scale.
- Collaboration versus Instrument de Vitesse. The Vitesse is larger at 39 mm and has a one-minute counter, which times shorter intervals than the collaboration’s 30-minute counter. Its base-1000 tachymeter is also a different scale from the collaboration’s 500-to-30 layout.
- Collaboration versus Instrument de Mesures. The Mesures combines telemeter, pulsometer and tachymeter scales on a 39 mm case with a one-minute counter. It is the choice for multi-scale reading, not for a single speed scale.
Measuring it against other mechanical chronographs
Published specifications for unrelated brands were not verified for this article, so no competitor ranking is offered here. To make a fair comparison, collect the same values for each watch:

- Winding method (hand-wound or automatic) and pusher layout (monopusher, two-pusher or other).
- Movement architecture, including whether the chronograph uses a column wheel or another control system, when the maker documents it.
- Chronograph counters: the number of counters, the maximum timing interval and the resolution of each counter.
- Scale type and base: tachymeter, telemeter, pulsometer or other, and any base value.
- Water resistance rating in metres.
- Production status, edition size and price, with the date and currency of the listing.
Use the same list for every watch. Architecture and scale tell you what a watch does and how it is built. They should not be read as a quality score.

FHH says the modern Chronographe Télémètre draws on an Angelus model that collectors know as the “Hungarian Air Force,” produced from 1948 to 1950. That is historical inspiration. It does not make the modern collaboration a vintage piece or a military-issue watch.
Angelus’ collector guide, published in 2016, says the brand sold its first wrist chronographs around 1925 or 1926. Early monopusher examples used Valjoux movements or Angelus’ own SF 15 calibre. The guide is a secondary historical account, and it is older than the current product line.

Monochrome founder Frank Geelen describes the design on the product page: “A mono-pusher chronograph movement developed by three of the most esteemed independent watchmakers, and originally developed for Cartier. That’s the movement in our fifth and latest Montre de Souscription. This is the Angelus Chronographe Tachymètre Montre de Souscription 5, which is heavily inspired by vintage chronographs and relies on a brilliantly finished movement and elegant proportions.” These are the seller’s own words about its product, not an independent assessment.
Edition size, price and availability
Monochrome’s product page describes the collaboration as a maximum run of 20 pieces, listed at €18,500 excluding VAT. Those figures reflect the page at the time of writing. They do not confirm that pieces remain in stock, and the price and availability may change. Check Monochrome’s Montre de Souscription 5 page directly before making a decision.
Who the watch suits
Choose the collaboration if you want a compact 37 mm hand-wound monopusher with a tachymeter scale and a movement lineage that Monochrome and Angelus link to the Cartier Tortue Monopoussoir. Look elsewhere in the Angelus range if you need a one-minute counter (Instrument de Vitesse or Instrument de Mesures) or a telemeter scale (Chronographe Télémètre). For comparisons outside Angelus, use the checklist above and confirm each value from the maker’s own specifications.

Compare it with other chronographs on scale, counter length, case size, winding, water resistance and edition terms rather than on movement architecture alone.
