Fratello’s Robert-Jan Broer says that discovery led to a proposal to bring the Star’s distinctive details into the modern Divers Sixty-Five. After a mock-up and design discussions with Oris, the result was a 40 mm, 300-piece edition released in 2022.
The vintage watch behind the collaboration
Oris introduced the Divers Sixty-Five collection in 2015, drawing on its 1965 “Waterproof” dive watch. The Fratello edition’s inspiration was a later model: the 1968 Oris Star that Rosputinsky discovered in 2021. Fratello’s account describes the Star era as a technical transition for Oris, including the move to Swiss lever escapements after a long effort to replace pin-pallet mechanisms, and the use of stainless-steel cases instead of chromed ones. That historical framing comes from Fratello’s development account, rather than an independently verified company archive.
This was the second Fratello–Oris collaboration. Their first was a 2020 Big Crown Pointer Date in bronze. For the follow-up, the team wanted to build around a particular vintage watch they had handled and documented, rather than simply select a new color for an existing Divers Sixty-Five.
How the idea became a design
Fratello’s team photographed the original Star and made a mock-up showing its design elements in a modern Divers Sixty-Five case. Broer summarized the starting point this way: “We had the original 1968 Oris Star in the office, took photos of it, and created a mock-up of the watch in a modern Oris Divers Sixty-Five case with all the design elements as described above.” The team presented the concept to Oris. Broer says the design was discussed with chairman Ulrich W. Herzog and co-CEO Rolf Studer at Watches and Wonders 2022 before production.

Why Fratello chose 40 mm
The team settled on a 40 mm case after considering the other Divers Sixty-Five sizes. In Broer’s view, the 36 mm case was small for a contemporary diver, while the 42 mm option looked too large. He also felt the 40 mm dial gave the hands and date window a better balance. Those are the design team’s stated reasons, not comparative wear-test results.
Which Star details made the cut
The finished watch carried over a group of recognizable cues from the vintage Star: a glossy black dial, vintage Oris typography and “Star” designation, printed hour markers, dotted bezel markings, and a trapezoid-framed date at 3 o’clock. Its date disc is black with white printing. Fratello also wanted yellowish lume and an hour hand without the split found on regular Divers Sixty-Five models. Broer describes discussion with Oris over typography and bezel treatment; Herzog approved removing the split from the hand.

The dial inscriptions “10 Atmos,” “Automatic,” and “26 jewels” also nod to the older watch. They are design references, not a substitute for the modern model’s stated water-resistance rating or evidence about the vintage watch’s performance.
What the production watch included
Fratello and Oris selected Oris caliber 733, based on the Sellita SW200-1. Fratello lists 26 jewels, a frequency of 28,800 vibrations per hour, and a 38-hour power reserve. Broer says the case back was deliberately kept in steel, with a Fratello medallion, rather than made transparent to display the movement.

Fratello said the set included a black calf-leather strap and a black Tropic-style rubber strap, each with an Oris-signed buckle, plus a travel pouch. A stainless-steel bracelet for the 40 mm Divers Sixty-Five was identified separately as reference 0782018, with 20 mm end links; it was an additional purchase, not one of the two included straps. Oris’s product page lists a 20 mm bracelet as an accessory, but buyers should check exact compatibility and availability for the specific watch.
