What the ocean review actually tested
In a review published June 10, 2024, Fratello’s Henry Black wrote about spending close to a month with the five-row-bracelet reference M7941A1A0NU-0003, supplied by Tudor for hands-on review. The ocean use he describes was skin-diving in calm conditions around Sydney. The Pacific Ocean in the headline is the setting for that experience, not the scope of a scientific or Pacific-wide test. His comments about handling and legibility are personal observations, not measured visibility results. They are useful for understanding how this particular watch felt to one wearer in the water, but they do not establish how every diver will find it.
How it handled underwater
The bezel was easier to grip
Black found the Monochrome’s larger bezel teeth easier to grasp than the smoother coin-edge bezel on his Black Bay 58. As he put it: “The slightly toothier bezel on the new Black Bay is very easy to grip, whereas I find my hands can slip when adjusting the Black Bay 58.” That is a comparative, first-person impression rather than a standardized grip test.

The seconds hand was less distinct
Black said the lollipop-shaped seconds hand competed visually with the round hour markers underwater, making it less identifiable. In his practical view, “The minute hand and bezel are more useful in swimming or skin-diving applications anyway.” That is his assessment of those activities, not a claim that the seconds hand is unreadable for all users or conditions.
Fit and controls involve trade-offs
On his wrist, Black preferred the shorter lug-to-lug fit of his Black Bay 58. He nevertheless judged the Monochrome’s bezel, crown, and clasp ergonomics superior. His experience illustrates why wrist fit and control feel are individual: a larger watch can offer controls a wearer prefers while still fitting less comfortably than a smaller alternative.

What Tudor’s 200 m rating means here
Tudor specifies 200 m (660 ft) water resistance for the Black Bay 41 mm. That is the manufacturer’s rating, not a depth Black reports reaching. His account concerns ocean swimming and skin-diving; it does not describe a pressure-chamber test or establish performance at the rated depth. Tudor’s product page for reference M7941A1A0NU-0001 lists the rating for a three-link-bracelet variant in the same model family, rather than Black’s five-row-bracelet review reference.
A water-resistance rating is a manufacturer specification, not a promise that any watch is appropriate for every underwater activity or remains water-resistant indefinitely. Follow Tudor’s use and care guidance for the exact watch, and have its water resistance checked as appropriate; Black’s review is not a substitute for either.

Movement, certification, and specifications
Tudor’s official Black Bay 41 mm product and family pages describe the MT5602-U automatic movement as METAS Master Chronometer certified, with a 70-hour power reserve. Tudor states that the fully assembled watch is tested to a tolerance of 0/+5 seconds per day. Its product page describes certification criteria that include precision, magnetic resistance, waterproofness, and power reserve, and specifies a 15,000-gauss magnetic exposure criterion. These are brand specifications and certification claims, not outcomes measured by Black during the ocean outing.
The official product page for M7941A1A0NU-0001 lists a 41 mm steel case, 13.6 mm thickness, 21 mm lug width, black aluminium bezel insert, 60-minute unidirectional bezel, and domed sapphire crystal. Tudor’s family page describes an inky black dial with rhodium-plated markers and hands, plus bracelet variants with T-fit adjustment and a fitted black rubber strap option. Details can vary by reference and configuration; check the exact variant before buying.

Price depends on the exact reference and market
Fratello listed €4,620 for the five-row-bracelet reference M7941A1A0NU-0003 in its 2024 review. That is a dated review price, not a current quote. Tudor’s US product page, observed in 2026, lists a suggested retail price of $5,325 for M7941A1A0NU-0001, a different reference with a three-link bracelet. The figures cover different configurations and markets, so they should not be treated as like-for-like prices or as today’s price in every region.
Tudor’s reference-specific product page and its Black Bay family page are the places to confirm current specifications and local availability.

Who this ocean experience will help
The review is most useful to someone considering the Monochrome for swimming or recreational skin-diving and weighing its controls against a Black Bay 58. Black’s account suggests a bezel that he could grip more confidently, with a seconds-hand design he found less visually distinct underwater. It cannot settle the fit question for another wrist or establish a universal legibility result.
