You can add apps to Apple Watch in two standard ways: install a compatible app directly from the App Store on the watch, or use the paired iPhone’s Watch app. On iPhone, go to Watch > My Watch > Available Apps and tap Install. On the watch, open App Store, choose an app, tap Get or its price, then double-click the side button to confirm.
Not every iPhone app has a watchOS version. If an app is missing from Available Apps, it may be incompatible, unavailable in your region, restricted by an account or organization, or simply lack an Apple Watch component.

Install an app directly on Apple Watch
This is usually the quickest method when the App Store is available on your watch:

- Tap App Store.
- Tap Search, or browse the featured apps and collections.
- Search with Scribble, Dictation, or the onscreen keyboard.
- Tap the app you want.
- Tap Get for a free download, or tap the displayed price for a paid app.
- When prompted, double-click the Apple Watch side button to authorize the download.
After the download finishes, the app is added to the watch. A Get button means the download itself is free; it does not guarantee that the app has no subscriptions or in-app purchases. Add an iPhone app’s watch version from your iPhone
If the app is already installed on your iPhone and includes a compatible watchOS app, install it from the Watch app:
- Open the Watch app on the paired iPhone.
- Tap My Watch.
- Scroll to Available Apps.
- Tap Install next to the app.
When installation is complete, the app moves into the Installed on Apple Watch section and should be available on the watch. Apple’s consumer guide covers both the direct-watch and paired-iPhone methods: Download apps on your Apple Watch.
Important: having an app on your iPhone does not automatically mean it can run on Apple Watch. Only apps with a compatible watchOS component appear in Available Apps. Apple distinguishes between apps that depend on an iPhone, paired apps that work with an iPhone version, and standalone watchOS apps. Some watch apps therefore require the iPhone app to be installed and signed in first. Apple documents these app types in its Apple Watch deployment guide.

Control automatic app installation
By default, Apple Watch can automatically install compatible watch versions of apps already installed on the iPhone. To choose apps manually instead:
- Open the iPhone’s Watch app.
- Tap My Watch.
- Tap General.
- Turn off Automatic App Install.
You can then install individual apps from My Watch > Available Apps. This setting is different from the App Store’s other automatic controls:
- Automatic App Install: adds compatible watch versions of apps already on the iPhone.
- Automatic Downloads: automatically downloads watchOS apps purchased on another device.
- Automatic Updates: installs new versions of apps already on the watch.
On the watch, automatic download and update controls are under Settings > App Store. Related controls are also available in the iPhone Watch app under My Watch > App Store. Apple lists these settings in its App Store settings guide.

Find an app after installing it
Press the Digital Crown to open the Apple Watch Home Screen. The app may be visible in the current grid or list layout. If you cannot spot it:
- Open the Home Screen and switch to the app list if the grid makes the icon difficult to locate.
- Check the iPhone Watch app under My Watch > Installed on Apple Watch.
- If the app appears in that installed section, it is installed even if its icon is hard to find on the watch.
If it is not listed under Installed on Apple Watch, the installation may not have completed. Check the download again, then consider removing and reinstalling the app.
Re-download an app you previously purchased
You do not normally pay again to download an app associated with the same Apple Account. On Apple Watch:

- Open App Store.
- Scroll to the bottom and tap Account.
- Tap Purchased.
- Select the app and tap the download control.
A redownload does not remove any subscription or in-app-purchase requirements. Apple’s current steps are in its Apple Watch App Store guide.
Update Apple Watch apps
To update apps manually on the watch:
- Open App Store.
- Scroll down and tap Account.
- Tap Updates.
- Tap Update beside one app, or tap Update All.
To let the watch update apps automatically, open Settings > App Store on Apple Watch and turn on Automatic Updates. You can also manage the setting in the iPhone Watch app under My Watch > App Store. See Apple’s manual Apple Watch app update instructions.

Remove an app from Apple Watch
To delete an app on the watch:
- Press the Digital Crown to open the Home Screen.
- Touch and hold the Home Screen until the apps jiggle.
- Tap the delete button on the app.
- Tap Delete App to confirm.
- Press the Digital Crown when finished.
Not every built-in Apple app can be removed. You can also remove a third-party app from the iPhone:

- Open the iPhone Watch app.
- Tap My Watch.
- Scroll to Installed on Apple Watch and tap the app.
- Turn off Show App on Apple Watch.
For apps that exist only on watchOS, the control may instead say Delete app on Apple Watch. If an app is installed on both devices, deleting it from the iPhone also removes its Apple Watch installation where applicable. Apple explains both removal methods in Delete apps from Apple Watch.
Why an app will not install or appear
The app is not in Available Apps
Check these possibilities:
- No watchOS version: the iPhone app may have no Apple Watch companion.
- Compatibility: the app may require a newer watchOS version or may not support your particular watch configuration.
- Region or language: some apps are not offered in every country, region, or language.
- Already installed: look under Installed on Apple Watch before trying again.
- iPhone dependency: the watch component may require the iPhone app, an account, or a particular setup.
- Restrictions: a child account, Screen Time control, Ask to Buy, or organizational management may block the app.
If the app is not listed, installing the iPhone version again will not create a watch app that the developer does not provide. Apple notes that availability can depend on compatibility, region, and language in its Apple Watch app-download guidance.
The App Store is missing from the watch
The App Store can be hidden or unavailable on a work- or school-managed Apple Watch. Apple’s device-management documentation includes restrictions that can prevent users from installing or updating apps: Apple Watch management restrictions.
Family Setup or a child’s watch may also have installation, deletion, age-rating, payment, or approval restrictions. The account’s organizer or parent may need to approve the download through Ask to Buy or change the relevant controls. Apple’s App Store settings guidance covers these account-related controls.
The app downloads but is not visible
Use this sequence:
- Press the Digital Crown and check both the Home Screen layout and app list.
- Open the iPhone Watch app and confirm the app is under Installed on Apple Watch.
- Wait for the installation to finish if it is still in progress.
- Confirm that the required iPhone companion app is installed and signed in to the same Apple Account.
- Check the watch’s available storage, its connection to the iPhone or internet, and software compatibility.
- If the app remains unavailable, remove it and install it again.
A purchase or download fails
For paid apps, verify the Apple Account and its payment method. For free apps, remember that Get describes the download price, while subscriptions and in-app purchases can still be offered inside the app. If you are using cellular data, try Wi-Fi or the paired iPhone connection if the download is slow or incomplete.
Can you add apps without an iPhone?
Direct installation from the Apple Watch App Store is supported when that App Store is available on the watch. However, many apps still require an iPhone pairing, an iPhone companion app, or account setup. A cellular connection does not turn every iPhone app into a standalone watch app; the developer must provide a compatible watchOS version and support the required configuration.
