The safest starting point is a charm made to slide onto your watch strap, positioned well away from the watch head and the strap’s fastening hardware. Before fitting it, confirm that its opening suits your band’s width and thickness and that it can pass any buckle or clasp. A nominal strap-width match alone does not guarantee a fit.
Choose an attachment that suits your watch
For a reversible attachment, look for a purpose-made slide-on watch strap charm whose maker gives compatible strap dimensions. Check the full path the charm must travel—not just the part of the strap where you want it to sit. Buckles, clasps, keepers, and other hardware can prevent a charm from sliding into position.

For example, the maker’s page for a Watch Band Charm says it is designed for its leather bands and fits most 20 mm straps around 3.9–4 mm thick. It describes a quick-release pin design. Those are product-specific fit details, not a standard for watch charms generally. The page showed the item out of stock when accessed, so availability should not be assumed. A customer review on the same page reports that the charm could be fitted on only one side because it would not pass the strap clasp; that illustrates why clasp clearance matters, rather than establishing a universal defect.

Check the fit before putting the charm on
- Identify the strap and charm dimensions. Confirm the band’s width and thickness where the charm will sit, then compare them with the charm maker’s stated limits. If those limits or measurements are missing, do not assume the charm fits.
- Check the route past the fastening hardware. If the charm must slide over a buckle, clasp, or keeper, make sure its opening can clear that hardware without forcing or bending it. If it cannot pass, choose another position or attachment rather than forcing it.
- Plan a position on the strap, not against the watch head. Leave enough room that the charm cannot rub the case or crystal as the strap moves. There is no universal safe clearance measurement established for all watches, straps, and charms.
- Fit it according to its design. Use the charm maker’s instructions. If fitting requires removing the strap, follow the instructions for the exact watch model or ask a watchmaker if you are unfamiliar with the mechanism or the watch is valuable.
- Check movement and fastening before wearing it normally. Close and open the strap, move your wrist, and confirm the charm does not slide into the watch head, press against the case, catch on clothing, or change how the strap sits or fastens. Remove it if any of these problems occur.
Keep the case, crystal, and lugs out of the charm’s path
Place the charm where it can move with the strap without swinging or pressing against the watch case or crystal. Check its position after the strap is fastened, since the strap’s curve around the wrist can shift a charm from where it sat while the watch was off.
Avoid using the gap at the lugs or the spring bar as a makeshift charm anchor. Lugs and spring bars are part of the strap-to-case connection, not automatically a jewelry attachment point. Royal Pop Lab’s guidance for its own modular pocket-watch system warns that careless spring-bar handling can scratch the inside of the lugs. Its design includes dedicated attachment features, which is different from assuming that any watch’s lugs can carry a charm.

Do not glue, drill, pierce, or force a hard ring against a finished case as a workaround. If the charm does not fit the strap or a maker-provided attachment point, use a compatible charm or leave it off.
If strap removal is required
Quick-release fittings vary by watch and strap. NOWATCH’s instructions for its own B straps say to retract the pin, position the strap between the lugs, then release the pin so it locks. Those steps are specific to NOWATCH B straps; they are not universal instructions for removing or refitting every watch strap. NOWATCH B strap instructions

Use your watchmaker’s procedure for your model. If you cannot identify the correct release mechanism, or are concerned about marking the watch, have a watchmaker fit the strap or charm rather than experimenting at the lug.
