Choose a repair shop by checking your watch’s warranty and brand-service requirements first, then verifying who will do the work, what the estimate covers, which parts may be used, and what testing and repair coverage you will receive. Get those details in writing before handing over the watch or authorizing work.
Start with your watch’s warranty and service requirements
If the watch may still be under a manufacturer warranty, or has brand-specific service requirements, check the manufacturer’s current warranty terms and service locator before contacting a repairer. Rules differ by brand, model, and market; there is no single authorization rule for every watch.

For example, Rolex’s service information says its guarantee excludes certain damage associated with unauthorized repair, opening, manipulation, or non-genuine parts. Jaeger-LeCoultre’s guarantee terms specify authorized service channels for maintenance and repair, with geographic exceptions. Read the terms that apply to your watch and location rather than assuming these policies apply to another brand.

Compare authorized service and independent watchmakers
Neither option is automatically the right choice for every watch. An authorized center may be important for a warranty or a brand-specific requirement; an independent watchmaker may be suitable when the watch is outside those constraints and the person doing the work has relevant experience. Compare the actual proposal and qualifications, not just the shop label.
| What to compare | Questions to ask |
|---|---|
| Warranty and brand requirements | Is the watch still covered, and do the terms for this model and market require an authorized channel? |
| Relevant competence | Who will work on the watch, and what training or experience do they have with this movement and repair? |
| Scope and estimate | Does the proposal state the diagnosis, work, likely parts, cost, timing, and approval process for additional work? |
| Parts and repair coverage | What parts will be fitted, can replaced components be returned, and what written guarantee applies? |
| Checks and records | What tests suit the work, and will the shop provide the results in writing? |
These questions help compare proposals; they do not establish that authorized service is always better, that independent work is always cheaper, or that either route guarantees a particular outcome.
Ask who will do the work and verify relevant qualifications
Ask the shop who will actually handle the watch, whether the work is performed on site or sent elsewhere, and what experience the watchmaker has with your movement, brand, and type of repair. A shop’s general reputation or a credential label alone cannot tell you whether the assigned person is a good fit for this job.
The American Watchmakers-Clockmakers Institute (AWCI) cautions: “Unfortunately the simple term certified watchmaker is not protected and can be used by anyone.” Its Watch Owner FAQ explains that an AWCI-certified watchmaker has passed the organization’s certification exam. Ask which organization issued any certification and what it covers. AWCI membership can be another professional signal, but membership alone does not establish experience with a particular watch or repair.

Get a written estimate and approval process
Before authorizing work, ask for a written diagnosis and proposal that identifies:
- The work the shop recommends and why.
- Likely replacement parts and whether their type or availability is uncertain.
- The total estimate, including any stated fees or conditions.
- The estimated turnaround and when the shop will update you if it changes.
- How the shop will seek approval if it finds additional work after opening the watch.
Make clear that work beyond the agreed scope requires your approval. Manufacturer procedures offer examples, not a universal rule: Rolex says it evaluates the watch and presents an estimate for approval before service, and Patek Philippe says its authorized network provides repair cost estimates. The shop should explain its own process and put the agreed terms in writing.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Clarify parts, returned components, and repair coverage
Ask whether replacement parts will be original, compatible, or aftermarket, and whether the shop can return parts it removes. If the watch has manufacturer coverage, confirm in writing how the proposed work and parts could affect it under the terms for your specific model and market.
Get the repair guarantee in writing. Check its duration, what work or components it covers, how to make a claim, and any exclusions. Brand policies vary: CHANEL describes a repair guarantee card for qualifying authorized work, and TUDOR describes a service guarantee subject to terms and exclusions. These examples are not a standard that applies to other shops or watches.

Ask what will be tested and documented
Testing should fit the work and the watch. Ask what checks the shop will perform after the repair, which results you will receive, and whether those checks support any claim about the watch’s condition. Do not assume that every repair includes the same tests or that a watch will retain a particular performance or water-resistance rating without documented results.
For example, TUDOR says its service procedure checks timekeeping and waterproofness. That is a brand-specific procedure, not a universal requirement for every repair. Ask for relevant written results, such as timekeeping or water-resistance checks, when they matter to the job.
Use this checklist before handing over the watch
- Check the manufacturer’s warranty terms and service locator for your watch and market.
- Ask who will perform the work, where it will be done, and what relevant training or experience they have.
- Get the diagnosis, proposed work, likely parts, estimate, and expected turnaround in writing.
- Agree that additional work requires your approval before it proceeds.
- Confirm parts, return of removed components, repair coverage, and any effect on manufacturer coverage.
- Ask what post-repair checks and written records you will receive.
Before leaving the watch, request a receipt or intake record that identifies it and records its condition and the agreed scope. Keep the estimate and any written approvals with that record so you can refer to the exact terms if the repair changes.
