If the exact new-release watch you want is unavailable, start with the brand’s official dealer locator and contact authorized retailers about that precise reference and configuration. Ask whether it can be ordered, how the retailer records interest, what it can say about incoming stock, and whether any timing is an estimate or a commitment. If you consider another seller, verify the exact watch, seller, warranty, returns, and total cost before paying.
First, confirm what “sold out” means for your watch
Check the manufacturer’s current product information and dealer locator, then contact more than one authorized retailer within a reasonable travel area. Be specific: provide the reference number and the desired dial, case material, bracelet or strap, and size. A retailer may have a matching watch incoming, be able to order it, or be unable to provide a date; availability and procedures vary by brand, model, region, and retailer.
Ask each retailer:
- Is this exact reference and configuration orderable, or can you register my interest or notify me if one becomes available?
- How do you record interest, and are there location, purchase, or other conditions?
- Do you know of incoming stock? If so, is the timing an estimate or a firm commitment?
- What price, taxes, deposit, cancellation terms, and warranty apply to the purchase?
Do not treat an estimated arrival date as a guaranteed delivery or assume that every retailer uses a formal waitlist or queue.
Use the brand’s authorized route
Verify authorization through the watch brand, not by relying on a seller’s own description or on the fact that a watch appears genuine. Rolex says new and genuine Rolex watches are sold exclusively by Official Rolex Jewelers. Its FAQ says retailers receive regular deliveries but independently manage allocation and sales; for availability, Rolex advises: “Please contact your nearest Official Rolex Retailer.” It does not promise a universal waitlist, queue position, or delivery date. For another brand, use its official dealer locator or contact its customer service to verify that a seller is currently authorized for the relevant market. Policies and warranty eligibility differ by brand. For example, Seiko’s U.S. Internet Purchase Warning recommends buying online only from an authorized Seiko dealer and warns that unauthorized sites may sell counterfeit, second-hand, or tampered watches, or may not provide the original warranty or after-sales service. Choose between waiting and another sales channel
Wait for an authorized retailer
This is the clearest route if buying new through a brand-authorized seller, obtaining the applicable manufacturer warranty, and using official service matter most. Ask what the retailer can actually confirm about the exact watch. There is no reliable general wait-time average established here, and availability or allocation at one retailer does not establish what another can offer.

Consider a secondary-market listing carefully
A non-authorized seller may list a watch that is available sooner, but assess the particular seller and item rather than relying on broad assurances such as “authenticated” or “unworn.” Before committing, get the following in writing:
- The exact reference and configuration, and the watch’s condition, including whether it has been worn, altered, or serviced.
- The seller’s legal identity and location, plus a way to verify its reputation and the specific watch.
- Whether the serial number is present and what information the seller will provide about it.
- Who provides the warranty, its duration and exclusions, who performs repairs, and who pays shipping.
- The return period and conditions, payment protections, and any available independent authentication or inspection.
- The full delivered cost, including applicable taxes, shipping, and import charges.
A seller’s warranty is the seller’s promise; it does not by itself show that the manufacturer’s warranty applies. One retailer, for example, advertises authenticated, unworn stock and a two-year retailer warranty, but those are that retailer’s claims, not a brand-backed or universal guarantee. Review the retailer’s stated terms directly and verify whether they cover the particular watch you are considering.

Check the warranty before paying
For a Rolex, the brand says its five-year international guarantee applies to qualifying new watches sold by an Official Rolex Jeweler when the jeweler completes the guarantee card in full at purchase and the card is presented with the watch. Confirm the current terms for the exact watch and purchase region with Rolex or the retailer. A watch’s apparent authenticity, or a seller’s own warranty, is not a substitute for meeting those conditions. See Rolex’s FAQ.
For another brand, consult its current warranty terms and ask the brand whether the specific watch and warranty record qualify. If a non-authorized seller offers coverage, establish who handles the claim, which service provider performs repairs, what is excluded, how long coverage lasts, and who pays shipping. Check return and payment recourse before sending money, especially when buying from a seller in another jurisdiction.

Compare the actual offers, not general promises
Before choosing, compare the same reference and configuration across the offers available to you. Record the seller’s authorization status, confirmed stock or estimated timing, condition, total delivered price, warranty provider and service access, return terms, and payment recourse. Allocation practices, legal rights, taxes, import costs, and warranty eligibility depend on the brand, purchase market, and seller; a general claim about one channel cannot settle those details for a particular watch.
