1. Define the exact watch before comparing offers
Ask the seller to identify the watch precisely, rather than relying on a broad description such as “Royal Oak Offshore.” Get the full reference and written details of its configuration so you can assess whether the watch being offered matches the listing and sale documents.

- Full reference, case material, dial, and bracelet or strap configuration

2. Vet the seller and put the deal in writing
Before paying, establish who is legally selling the watch, where the seller is located, who will receive payment, and whether the seller is an authorized AP retailer or an independent pre-owned dealer. - What examination or authentication is performed, and by whom?
- Who issues the warranty, what does it cover, and what exclusions apply?
- What is the return deadline, and what conditions could invalidate a return?
- Who arranges and pays for shipping and insurance in each direction?
- What payment protections and dispute process apply?
Do not treat a seller’s generic “authenticated” wording as equivalent to examination in AP’s workshops. A specific Bucherer US listing for reference 26470ST.OO.A099CR.01 stated that experts authenticated the watch, included a two-year Bucherer warranty, and allowed return or exchange within 14 days of delivery if the watch was unworn, unaltered, and not special-ordered. 3. Make authentication part of the purchase agreement
What an Extract from the Archives establishes
AP says an Extract from the Archives confirms that the watch’s unique case and movement numbers appear in its records. It expressly does not warrant the authenticity of the watch. Treat it as a records document, not proof that the watch as a whole—including its components—is genuine.

What AP’s Certificate of Authenticity establishes
AP says its Certificate of Authenticity is issued after experts in Le Brassus examine the watch. It certifies the authenticity of the watch, its materials, and its components, and includes identifying characteristics and current photographs. A serial number, matching papers, a box, seller photographs, or an archive extract alone should not substitute for that examination. Agree in writing, before payment, whether the sale depends on AP examination and who pays for transport, insurance, examination, and return if the watch is not as represented. 4. Assess condition and possible service needs separately
Request service evidence
Ask for the latest service invoice and a clear account of replaced parts, polishing, water-resistance testing, and known faults. AP recommends annual complimentary boutique check-ups of chronometric performance, functions, water resistance, and magnetisation. AP says those check-ups are not warrantied. Understand what AP describes for service
AP describes its water-resistance service as opening and cleaning the case, checking the movement, and replacing damaged components; the warranty for that service is limited to replaced components. AP says its complete maintenance service has a two-year warranty. These service terms are distinct from any warranty offered by a pre-owned seller.

Ask how often the watch has been polished
Polishing history matters on a Royal Oak design because the case and bracelet have many distinct transitions. AP describes 24 bevel edges, 27 surfaces with different finishes, and 16 screw heads, and recommends no more than three to five aesthetic refreshings over the watch’s life cycle. 5. Compare offers on the same terms
If you are choosing among more than one watch, compare the factors that can change the real cost and risk. There is no established fair-market price in the cited information, so it does not support calling a particular asking price a bargain or claiming that an Offshore is a sound investment.
