Buy by the watch’s exact reference and condition—not by a listing title that says “Ebel 1911” or “El Primero.” Match the caseback, dial, bracelet and movement, then have an independent chronograph specialist inspect the watch. If service history is missing, get a written estimate before agreeing on a price, and do not assume the caseback’s water-resistance marking is still valid.
Identify the exact watch before comparing listings
Ebel chronograph names overlap in seller listings. The wave-bracelet model is commonly called the Sport Classic Chronograph, but listings may also use “1911” or “El Primero”; the later Le Modulor is a related but distinct family. Treat those words as search terms, not proof of identity. Start with the reference on the caseback and compare it with the dial, case, bracelet and movement.

Phillips’ collector guide says the reference 1134901 denotes a two-tone steel and yellow-gold configuration. It also describes original Sport Classic Chronograph dimensions of 38 mm × 11 mm. These are useful reference clues, not authentication guarantees: variants exist, and parts may have been changed. Phillips’ Ebel 1911 chronograph guide explains the numbering conventions.
For movement context, Fratello reports that early examples used the Zenith 3019PHC and later examples used Zenith caliber 400, called Ebel caliber 134. Phillips’ guide associates “134” in caliber references with Sport Classic and 1911 chronographs, while “137” indicates the later Le Modulor family. Fratello describes the El Primero 400 as a column-wheel chronograph running at 36,000 vibrations per hour. These historical descriptions do not establish which movement is inside a particular listing; ask a qualified watchmaker to confirm it. Do not transfer specifications from Ebel’s current Sport Classic models to a vintage chronograph. The current catalog includes an automatic 42 mm model with sapphire crystals, a wave-link bracelet and a 5-bar rating, but that does not establish the older chronograph’s size, movement or water resistance. Ebel’s current Sport Classic catalog shows the contemporary line.
Request the evidence that lets you assess the listing
Before travelling to see the watch or making an offer, ask the seller for clear, well-lit images and straightforward answers. A missing photo is a reason to request more information, not proof of a problem.

- Caseback with the full reference and serial legible.
- Bracelet, clasp and underside, including any visible marks; ask for the link count and a wrist-fit measurement.
- A movement photo, if the seller can provide one safely, or confirmation that an independent watchmaker may inspect it.
- Dated service invoices that identify the watch and describe work performed.
Ask whether the dial, hands, crown, pushers or bracelet have been replaced, and whether the replacement parts are documented. Compare the answers and photos against the reference and reputable collector coverage. The available reference material is not a complete authentication protocol, so do not treat matching a number or one visual detail as conclusive; arrange an independent inspection if you are considering the purchase.

Case, dial and crystal
Look for chipped crystal, impact damage, worn or uneven case edges, and signs that polishing may have softened the original shape or finish. Check the dial and hands for condition concerns. Photograph details you are unsure about and have a specialist assess them rather than relying on a seller’s brief description.

Bracelet and fit
Inspect the bracelet for stretch, loose or damaged links, clasp wear and missing links. Confirm the bracelet is original to the reference or ask what replacement was fitted. Bracelet type and completeness affect originality, fit and potential expense; Fratello’s author describes buying a replacement bracelet for his own example. That account is personal experience, not a universal specification or current cost guide. Get a wrist measurement and a current written quote if the bracelet needs work or replacement.
Chronograph and everyday operation
If the seller permits it and the watch is dry, observe whether the chronograph starts, stops and resets, and whether the date changes and the watch continues running. Note hesitation, failure to reset or unexplained stoppage. These checks can reveal a reason to pause, but they cannot replace a watchmaker’s inspection or timing-machine results. Ebel warns against operating the crown or chronograph pushers while the watch is wet or underwater.

Check service history and water resistance separately
Ask for documentation naming the watch or reference, service date and provider, parts replaced, and whether the chronograph and water resistance were tested. A vague claim that a watch was “serviced” is less useful than an invoice describing the work. If there is no evidence of recent service, ask a watchmaker experienced with automatic chronographs for a written estimate before settling on a price.

The manual also says an authorized Ebel service center resets water resistance as a routine service step. These instructions describe care; they do not show that a particular pre-owned watch has passed a current test. Ebel’s operating instruction manual covers maintenance and water resistance.

A depth marking on the caseback is not a present-day guarantee. Ebel says its water-resistance test corresponds to the depth engraved on the caseback under test conditions, while warning that damage or wear to the case, crown, gaskets or crystal—and improper handling—can cause leakage. Do not swim with or expose the watch to water unless you have a recent pressure-test result for that exact watch. Never operate the crown or pushers when it is wet or underwater.
Compare prices on a like-for-like basis
No defensible current price range or realized-sale dataset is established here. Fratello’s older price observation and personal service and bracelet costs are historical, location-specific anecdotes, not current market benchmarks. Do not use them as a valuation or assume they describe what your example will cost to service.
When comparing listings, match as closely as possible on reference, movement family, metal, dial configuration, bracelet or strap, condition and documented service. Keep asking prices separate from completed-sale prices, and account for missing links, an unconfirmed movement, undocumented replacement parts and unknown service. Search phrases such as “Ebel Sport Classic Chronograph 1134901,” “Ebel 1911 El Primero” and the exact caseback reference can help locate candidates, but verify the watch itself rather than relying on search-result labels.
Make the offer conditional on what remains unknown
If the seller cannot document service, the movement or the bracelet configuration, treat those as unresolved costs or risks—not as details established by the listing. Before committing, make sure the seller allows an independent specialist inspection, or decide whether the purchase still makes sense with the cost of an inspection and any required work included in your budget. Do not pay a premium for a claimed configuration, recent service or water resistance that cannot be substantiated for that individual watch.
