No single document settles authenticity. The paperwork is evidence, and the inspection is the test.
Start with the paperwork, and know what each document actually proves
Sellers often present a box, papers, and a service invoice as a package. Patek Philippe treats these as different things, and so should you. Each one answers a different question.
The Certificate of Origin
Patek Philippe describes the Certificate of Origin as the original document delivered with a new watch. It records the movement, case, and reference numbers. The manufacturer’s own FAQ puts it this way: “The Certificate of Origin is like a birth certificate delivered with every single new watch.” Patek Philippe also states that it cannot be reissued.
That last point matters in practice. A seller who offers a freshly produced or “replacement” Certificate of Origin is presenting something the manufacturer says does not exist. A missing certificate is a due-diligence problem to resolve before you pay, but its absence alone does not prove a watch is counterfeit. Many genuine watches change hands with the original paperwork incomplete or lost.
#1 Best Overall
A model-specific Patek Philippe instruction manual (the Caliber 324 S QA LU instructions) adds conditions for validity: the certificate is valid when dated, signed by an Authorized Patek Philippe Retailer, and completed with the owner’s name. The same manual says the certificate validates warranty privileges for two years after sale. That is manual-specific language. Check the documentation for the exact model and sale before you rely on any warranty term.
The Extract from the Archives
The Extract is a partial transcript of information held in Patek Philippe’s archives, including recorded features and the date of sale. It is the closest thing to an official archive check that a buyer can order, but it is not a replacement Certificate of Origin and it is not a condition report. It confirms what the archive holds; it does not confirm that the case, dial, hands, or movement are unaltered today.

Eligibility and terms, as stated on Patek Philippe’s current Extract pages:
- The watch must have been first sold at least ten years before the request.
- The fee is CHF 500.
- One request is allowed per twelve-month period per watch.
- Delivery is within ten weeks after order confirmation.
Patek Philippe’s pages do not give a per-country availability list in the material reviewed here, so confirm that the service is offered for your sale and location before relying on it in a negotiation.

Service records and service intake
Patek Philippe states that watches presented for service or repair are checked against historical archives, photographed, and recorded by serial number. That makes an authorized service intake useful evidence, and it is a sound basis for asking a seller to produce one. It is not a certification that every component is original. The manufacturer’s servicing page gives a 6–12 week intake process duration; that describes the reception stage, not a promised total turnaround for repair.
A service invoice documents the work that was billed. It does not prove the watch has never had replaced or refinished parts unless the record says so in terms.

Only an authorized provider should open the case
The movement and case numbers are not visible from the outside. They can only be read after the case back is removed, which makes the person who opens the watch the point of trust. Patek Philippe’s Watch Authenticity FAQ states: “The removal of the case back of a wristwatch or pocket watch should only be performed by an Authorized Retailer or an Authorized Service Center.”
Its Watch Care & Service FAQ adds: “All Patek Philippe timepieces must be serviced by authorized retailers or authorized service centers only.” Use Patek Philippe’s official retailer and service-center directories to confirm that the provider is genuine. Do not rely on a link or contact details supplied by the seller.

- Pin down the exact watch. Record the reference number, the claimed production and sale history, the included documents, the service history, and whether any component is original or replaced. Compare every claim with clear photographs and the written invoice or sale agreement. A box and papers do not, on their own, prove the watch’s present condition.
- Ask for the original Certificate of Origin. Have an authorized provider compare its movement, case, and reference numbers with the watch in hand. If the certificate is missing, decide before paying whether that is acceptable for the price, and say so in writing.
- Arrange an authorized inspection before payment is final. Confirm the provider against the official directory. Agree in writing who pays for the inspection and what happens if the findings differ from the listing, including whether you can withdraw and recover the funds.
- Consider an Extract from the Archives where eligible. Order it only if the watch meets the ten-year and first-sale conditions. Treat the result as archive documentation, not as proof of condition.
- Choose a payment route with clear custody and remedies. Read the platform or dealer terms for seller type, hold period, inspection window, return notice deadline, and dispute process before paying. The next section compares routes.
- Get every representation in writing. The sale agreement should identify the exact watch and seller, state condition and any replaced or refinished parts as represented, list included documents, and set out inspection, return, and refund terms. This is practical buyer guidance rather than legal advice for any particular jurisdiction; if the price is high, have a lawyer in your jurisdiction review the agreement.
- Keep a complete record. Save listing screenshots, correspondence, payment records, inspection and service documents, and photographs of the watch as received.
Comparing payment routes
Protection depends on who the seller is and how the money moves. Chrono24’s Buyer Protection page, the source reviewed here, describes escrow and different holding periods by seller type. Its stated 14-day return right applies to professional-dealer purchases, not private-seller purchases. Platform terms can change and may vary by country, so confirm them for the specific transaction.
| Route | Funds held by | Hold period | Stated return right | Marketplace or manufacturer checks |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Chrono24, professional dealer | Chrono24 escrow | 14 days after delivery, per Chrono24’s Buyer Protection page | 14-day withdrawal right applies | Chrono24 describes its own dealer checks; these are not Patek Philippe certification |
| Chrono24, private seller | Chrono24 escrow | Up to 7 days after delivery, per the same page | Not stated; the 14-day withdrawal right is for professional dealers | Same marketplace checks; not Patek Philippe certification |
| Direct sale outside a marketplace, private seller | Not stated | Not stated | Not stated | Not stated; depends on your written agreement |
| Direct sale from a dealer outside a marketplace | Not stated | Not stated | Depends on the dealer’s written terms | Not stated; check whether the dealer is an Authorized Patek Philippe Retailer |
Outside an escrow service, you are relying on the written agreement and on your payment method’s own dispute process. Those protections vary by country and card or bank, so check them before you pay.
Red flags that should stop the deal
- The seller will not allow an authorized inspection before funds are released.
- The offered Certificate of Origin is described as “reissued” or newly produced; Patek Philippe says none can be reissued.
- The movement or case numbers on the papers do not match the watch once the case is opened.
- The seller cannot name a service history, or offers only an unsigned or undated invoice.
- The seller asks for payment outside the platform or through a channel that gives you no recourse.
- The listing relies on the marketplace’s or a seller’s word alone, with no written condition statement.
Neither the sources reviewed nor this article can establish whether a particular price is fair for a particular reference or condition. Market prices, resale values, and the prevalence of counterfeits are not covered by Patek Philippe’s official material, so use an independent appraiser or the authorized provider’s opinion on value.
Costs to budget before you commit
- Archive Extract: CHF 500, where eligible.
- Authorized inspection: the sources reviewed do not state a fee; ask the provider and agree the payer in writing.
- Servicing or repair: model-specific costs are not stated in the material reviewed. The authorized network provides repair cost estimates, so request one in writing.
- Shipping, insurance, taxes, and import charges: these depend on the seller’s location and yours, and are not covered by the sources reviewed.
After purchase: keep the record and service the watch through the network
The buying process does not end at payment. Keep the documents above together, and send the watch to a Patek Philippe authorized service center for any future service. Patek Philippe states that its authorized network accepts watches for service and provides repair cost estimates. Ask for the estimate in writing before work begins, and keep the intake record that the service center creates, since it is the strongest later evidence of the watch’s serial number and identity.
