The safest brand-backed way to buy a pre-owned Rolex is through a participating Official Rolex Retailer selling a Rolex Certified Pre-Owned (CPO) watch. Rolex says CPO watches are authenticated and serviced in its workshops and come with a two-year international guarantee. If you buy outside that programme, verify the seller, get the watch’s condition and protections in writing, and arrange an appropriate inspection before the return period expires.
Choose between Rolex Certified Pre-Owned and another used sale
“Certified” is not a universal standard. Rolex Certified Pre-Owned is a specific Rolex programme, not a label that any dealer can apply to a used Rolex. It covers second-hand watches at least two years old and is available only through participating Official Rolex Retailers. Check the retailer and its CPO participation through Rolex’s Certified Pre-Owned information and its official retailer directory.

| Authentication | Rolex says watches are returned to its workshops, where their original configuration and components are checked. Rolex’s certification description | Ask who inspected the watch, what was examined, and what the inspection does—and does not—confirm. A seller’s claim or generic certificate is not Rolex authentication. |
| Service | Rolex says CPO watches are fully serviced. | Request dated service records and the provider’s name. If records are missing or a service may be due, ask a qualified service provider about likely work and cost. |
| Warranty | A two-year international Rolex guarantee from the sale date. | Terms depend on the seller and jurisdiction. Obtain the actual written warranty and return terms rather than relying on a verbal assurance. |
| Condition and originality | Rolex verifies the original configuration, though genuine replacement parts may be used. Rolex notes exceptions for some of its oldest CPO watches regarding waterproofness and original precision. | Ask about polishing, replacement or non-genuine parts, changes to the dial or bracelet, and current mechanical condition. What can be established depends on the specific watch and seller. |
| Price and selection | Rolex describes the assurance and service package; that does not establish a market-wide price premium or guarantee value. | Compare the exact reference, condition, completeness, service needs, and written protections. There is no single reliable price comparison across all watches. |
How to buy a Rolex CPO watch
- Find a participating retailer. Use Rolex’s official retailer directory and confirm that the specific location participates in CPO. Being an Official Rolex Retailer does not by itself establish CPO participation.
- Verify the listing is actually part of the programme. Rolex CPO watches are identified by the programme’s seal and Rolex-issued guarantee card. Rolex also describes an accompanying service booklet and official papers. Ask the retailer to confirm the watch’s CPO status and included materials in writing.
- Check how you will receive the watch. Rolex says participating retailers may show CPO inventory in online catalogues, with collection at the designated retailer or delivery. Confirm that the listing and seller are genuinely within the programme, rather than assuming an online marketplace listing is CPO.
- Read the guarantee and sale terms. Confirm the guarantee start date, what documentation comes with the watch, the return or exchange terms, and how to contact the retailer if a problem arises. Keep the invoice and programme documents.
- Assess the specific watch’s condition. Ask what parts, if any, were replaced and whether there are condition notes or limitations. For an older watch, do not assume it is suitable for swimming or diving; ask for current water-resistance information and, if relevant, a test by a qualified service provider.
If you buy from another seller, make the protections explicit
Rolex says only Rolex can confirm the authenticity of a Rolex watch. A box, papers, a serial number that appears to match, seller reputation, or a third-party opinion should not be treated as conclusive Rolex authentication. A qualified independent inspection can still help assess condition and identify concerns, but it is not the same as Rolex certification.

- Verify the business and transaction. Check the seller’s legal or business identity, use a payment channel with documented dispute terms, and insist on a written invoice and clear return policy. Consumer rights and payment protections depend on your country and the sales channel.
- Put the exact watch in the paperwork. Record the model or reference, serial details using a safe verification process, included items, known condition issues, and any parts replaced. Avoid sharing a full serial number publicly.
- Get warranty and service details in writing. Identify who provides the warranty, its duration and coverage, and any exclusions. Ask for dated service records and the service provider’s name; do not assume the seller’s warranty is backed by Rolex.
- Arrange inspection within the return window. If the seller permits it, have the watch examined by a qualified watchmaker or through a Rolex service channel before the return period ends. Confirm the inspection’s scope and what happens if it identifies a problem.
- Do not rely on a single clue. No universal checklist established by Rolex turns a buyer’s visual inspection into authentication. Treat unusually confident claims, missing documentation, or refusal to allow reasonable verification as reasons to pause rather than as proof of a fake.
Plan for servicing and water resistance
Rolex recommends periodic servicing through an Official Rolex Jeweler or Service Center. Its FAQ says the interval is approximately 10 years depending on the model and real-life use; that is general guidance, not a mandatory schedule or evidence that a particular used watch is in good condition. At service, Rolex evaluates the watch and provides a cost estimate for approval before doing the work. The CPO guarantee applies to programme watches; do not presume it comes with another pre-owned sale. See Rolex’s service FAQ.

Water resistance is a condition to verify, not an assumption to make from a model’s original specification. Rolex notes that some of its oldest CPO watches are exceptions to statements about performing like new in waterproofness and original precision. For any older or undocumented watch, ask for current condition details and a relevant test before exposing it to water.
