A serial number or a convincing-looking dial is not enough to prove that every part is authentic or original. If the seller cannot provide detailed photographs or allow a qualified inspection, pause rather than relying on a checklist or a claim that the watch is rare.
Start by identifying the claimed model and reference
“Gallet” covers multiple model families, and details can vary by reference and period. Ask the seller for the exact model and reference, the claimed movement or caliber, and an approximate production period. Then assess the watch against evidence for that specific configuration—not merely against a general description of a Gallet family.

Gallet’s official collections page says the Flying Officer was introduced in 1939 to help pilots track multiple time zones, while the Multichron collection began in 1938 as a chronograph family associated with precision timing. Gallet’s collection descriptions provide useful context, but they do not authenticate a particular watch or establish that every example had identical details. The brand’s description of the late-1960s Multichron Pilot, for example, notes a rotating 12-hour bezel and tachymeter and telemeter scales; compare those features only with the claimed reference and period.
Gallet relaunched under Breitling in 2026. Current collection names and designs are not proof of how a vintage reference was made, so keep modern marketing separate from evidence about the watch being offered. Gallet’s current site provides present-day brand context, not a substitute for reference-specific documentation.

Verify identity without mistaking a number for proof
A serial number identifies an individual watch; a reference number identifies a model. Gallet’s FAQ makes that distinction and says a reference identifies a model’s design, movement, and features. The reviewed FAQ does not supply a comprehensive vintage serial-number dating chart, so a number alone cannot establish a production date, authenticity, or originality of every component. See Gallet’s FAQ for its explanation.
Before discussing payment, ask for sharp, unedited photographs of:
- The full dial, photographed straight on and at an angle.
- The movement, with enough detail to read visible markings.
- The inside and outside of the caseback.
- The crown, pushers, bezel, and case sides.
- Any reference, serial, or caliber markings.
Also request the seller’s stated provenance and an explicit list of replaced, refinished, or service parts. Compare the movement, markings, and visible configuration with credible information for the claimed reference. The available information does not establish a single visual counterfeit test or an exhaustive vintage catalog; if the evidence conflicts or remains unclear, seek a specialist’s assessment.
Use Gallet’s official authentication route when needed
Gallet says a watch must be sent to one of its Main Centers for authentication. Its FAQ explains that a buyer can start through a Gallet service center or Breitling boutique and request a Certificate of Authenticity. Fees and return times vary. The process can assess the watch and identify non-compliant parts, but Gallet says its centers and boutiques do not appraise the watch’s monetary value. Check the official FAQ for current instructions before arranging a submission.
Authentication and valuation are different questions: a certificate is not a market appraisal, and neither a seller’s price nor a claim of rarity establishes that the watch is worth that amount. For purchase decisions, compare the evidence and condition of specific examples rather than relying on a headline description.

Inspect originality and condition component by component
Ask what is original, what has been replaced, and what has been refinished or relumed. A replacement part is not automatically a reason to reject a watch, but it should be disclosed and considered against the reference, condition, and asking price. The precise correct configuration depends on the reference, so avoid treating one online image as a universal template.
Dial, hands, and applied details
Look for spotting, damage, reluming, or refinishing on the dial. Check whether the hands and applied details appear consistent with the claimed reference. Ask for close, well-lit images; a single distant dial photograph can conceal condition issues.

Check for softened edges that may indicate excessive polishing, along with corrosion, dents, and unusual wear. Compare the caseback and movement markings with the seller’s claimed model and configuration. A mismatch deserves an explanation and, if unresolved, an independent inspection.
Crystal, crown, pushers, and bezel
Inspect these parts for wear, damage, or replacement. Their condition can affect both the watch’s appearance and operation. Ask the seller to disclose replacements rather than assuming a part is original from appearance alone.
Test the chronograph and ask for service evidence
For a chronograph, request a clear demonstration that it starts, stops, and resets correctly. Ask when the movement was last serviced, who performed the work, and whether documentation is available. A watch that runs is not necessarily recently serviced or keeping time within a range you consider acceptable.
Rank #3
A specialist auction catalog’s Multichron listing reports movement operation and reset separately from movement appearance, dial spotting, hand condition, case polishing and wear, and crystal condition. That is a useful example of the detail to request, not a universal Gallet specification or proof about another watch. See the individual Multichron catalog listing.

Recognize reasons to pause
- The seller will not provide movement or caseback photographs.
- Service claims are vague, undocumented, or unclear about who did the work.
- Markings or components appear inconsistent with the claimed reference, and the seller cannot explain why.
- The seller pressures you to pay before you can review the evidence or arrange an inspection.
- The seller refuses a reasonable independent inspection.
- The description promises water resistance or reliable timekeeping without supporting evidence.
None of these points alone identifies a counterfeit, but together they can make the purchase too uncertain to proceed without specialist help. Do not rely on one dial detail or an internet checklist as a definitive authentication test.
Plan for service and avoid assuming water resistance
Gallet currently recommends maintenance every two years and complete service every four to six years. It also recommends regular water-resistance testing, about once a year for watches frequently exposed to water. These are current brand recommendations, not a diagnosis of a particular vintage watch. Gallet’s service guidance also describes service work that can include replacing seals and checking water resistance.
If there is no credible recent service documentation, include an assessment and possible service in your ownership plan. Do not immerse a vintage watch based on an old case marking or a seller’s assurance. Have a qualified watchmaker assess the seals and water resistance before any exposure to water.
Compare listings using the same evidence
When choosing between two watches, weigh the evidence across the same categories rather than letting a single claim such as “rare” or “unpolished” decide the purchase.
| What to compare | Evidence to request or assess |
|---|---|
| Reference and configuration | Claimed reference, movement or caliber, markings, and details consistent with credible information for that model. |
| Originality | Disclosure of replacements, refinishing, reluming, and other service parts. |
| Dial and case condition | Clear photographs showing dial condition, case wear, polishing, corrosion, and dents. |
| Function and movement | Chronograph start, stop, and reset demonstration where applicable, plus movement photographs and an inspection if needed. |
| Service planning | Credible records, if available, and a realistic allowance for assessment or service where history is uncertain. |
| Seller transparency | Responsive answers, complete images, and willingness to permit independent review or official authentication. |
There is no supported market-wide price benchmark or exhaustive counterfeit taxonomy here. A careful comparison can establish which listing is better documented and in better evidenced condition; it cannot replace an inspection of the specific watch.
