There is no universal winner: the right choice depends on whether you want a vintage watch or a current release, and on the exact reference. “Top Time” names a Breitling collection; “Gallet chronograph” covers several historic lines as well as watches Gallet is presenting today. Compare specific examples by intended function, fit, originality, movement, condition and service support—not by brand name alone.
First decide which generation you mean
A vintage Breitling Top Time and a current Gallet are not like-for-like alternatives. Breitling introduced Top Time in 1964, while Gallet’s Multichron dates to 1938 and its Flying Officer to 1939. Gallet is again presenting watches under Breitling’s ownership, with current models distinct from the vintage watches sharing those heritage names.

That distinction matters because each name spans more than one configuration. Breitling’s official history documents Top Time references 2002, 810 and 815, with variations in cases, dials and movements. Gallet’s chronograph history includes lines with different intended uses; a Gallet chronograph is not automatically a Flying Officer or a Multichron. Identify the exact watch before comparing specifications.

Breitling Top Time: a broad chronograph family
Breitling says Willy Breitling introduced Top Time in 1964 as an “affordable chronograph” with contemporary, simple lines, aimed at younger customers with active lives. Its historical account describes different outer scales, including tachymeter, pulsometer and decimal scales. These serve different timing or measurement purposes, so inspect the actual dial rather than assuming every Top Time has the same function.
#1 Best Overall
- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
The collection also changed in appearance and construction. Breitling’s history notes the early ref. 2002, ref. 810 case and dial variations—including a 24-hour dial—and ref. 815 examples using the Valjoux 7736. It lists a 1973 ref. 815 at 38.0 mm and a 1974 Long Playing ref. 815 at 37.8 mm. Those are dimensions for the particular examples shown, not specifications for every Top Time.
The two-subdial Top Time associated with the 1965 film Thunderball was modified with a Geiger counter, according to Breitling. The brand also reports that this watch was bought from a car trunk for GBP 25 and sold at auction in 2013 for almost GBP 104,000. That exceptional story is not a guide to ordinary Top Time prices or present-day value.

Gallet: distinguish the travel watch from other chronographs
Gallet’s Multichron is a wider chronograph family associated with activities such as sport, racing, sailing and exploration. The Flying Officer, introduced in 1939, was designed around tracking multiple time zones during long-distance travel. If travel-time display is what attracts you, confirm that the particular watch is a Flying Officer and check how its dial presents that function; the broader Gallet name does not guarantee it.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteGallet’s 2026 relaunch material describes a current 40 mm Flying Officer in chronograph and three-hand variants, as well as current Multichron lines. It says the watches are manufactured within Breitling’s infrastructure and identifies Caliber B09 as powering the Classics series. That caliber claim should not be extended to every current Gallet, and it says nothing about the movement in a vintage Gallet.

Compare the exact watches on the points that affect ownership
| Decision point | What to check | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Generation and identity | Current or vintage; exact model and reference; serial; movement; dial and case configuration. | The names cover multiple eras and configurations, not one fixed specification. |
| Function | Chronograph layout, scales, register arrangement and, for a Flying Officer, the travel-time display. | A tachymeter, pulsometer, decimal scale and world-time-oriented display are not interchangeable. |
| Fit | Diameter, thickness, lug shape and how the specific case sits on your wrist. | Collection names alone do not establish comfort. Use the dimensions of the exact watch. |
| Originality and condition | Dial, hands, case, pushers and crown; look for refinishing, polishing, corrosion, replacements or repairs. | A reference name or archive document does not prove that an individual watch remains original or is in good condition. |
| Movement and service | Movement photographs, service records, chronograph operation and a qualified watchmaker’s assessment of the exact movement. | Reliable operation and future upkeep depend on the watch’s condition and available service support. |
| Price | Compare examples of the same period and configuration, accounting for condition, completeness and likely service costs. | No defensible current, like-for-like price comparison is established here; a general “better value” claim would be unsupported. |
How to assess a vintage example before buying
- Get the identifying details. Ask for the exact model or reference, serial number and movement, plus clear photographs of the dial, caseback and movement. Compare the configuration with credible documentation for that specific watch.
- Establish what has changed. Ask the seller to identify replaced parts, dial or hand refinishing, polishing and repairs. The name on the dial cannot establish which components are original.
- Check function and condition independently. Request service invoices and a recent assessment from a watchmaker familiar with the movement. Have the chronograph checked; photographs and a seller’s description are not a mechanical inspection.
- Treat brand records as supporting evidence, not authentication. Breitling offers an archive extract, but says it is based on information supplied by the applicant and prepared without physically inspecting the watch. See Breitling’s archive extract information.
- Budget for maintenance and avoid assuming water safety. Gallet’s current service guidance recommends maintenance every two years, a complete service every four to six years, and regular water-resistance tests; it recommends testing about annually for watches frequently exposed to water. These are brand recommendations, not a diagnosis of a specific vintage watch. Do not immerse an old watch based on its original rating alone. See Gallet’s service guidance.
Which one should you choose?
- Choose a Top Time candidate if its particular dial, scale, proportions and chronograph configuration suit your use—and you can verify its reference, movement and condition.
- Choose a Gallet Flying Officer candidate if the travel-time design is the feature you want, after confirming that the exact model has it and assessing its condition and support.
- Consider a different Gallet chronograph on its own merits if it is a Multichron or another line; do not treat the Flying Officer’s purpose as a description of all Gallet chronographs.
- For a current watch, compare current releases only. Gallet’s current range is a separate proposition from vintage Gallet, just as today’s Top Time should be identified by its exact current reference rather than compared using a historical example’s specifications.
There is no evidence-based general price or investment winner between these names. A sound decision rests on the exact watch’s function, fit, condition, documentation and service prospects.
