Identify a vintage Gallet by matching its markings, movement, case and dial to documented examples—not by converting a serial number into a year. A reference points to a model; a serial identifies an individual watch. For a defensible date, combine several period clues and report a range unless reliable maker records establish an exact date.
How to identify your vintage Gallet watch
Photograph the watch before handling it
Take clear, straight-on photographs of the dial, case from several angles, exterior caseback, crown, pushers, bezel, lugs and bracelet or strap. Record the watch’s dimensions and visible engravings. If it is valuable, unfamiliar, or its case is stuck, do not force it open; ask a watchmaker to inspect the movement and inside of the caseback.

Record every marking and where it appears
Transcribe the dial signature, caseback text, reference, serial number, metal marks and any other visible engraving. Note each marking’s location and keep case and movement numbers in separate fields. A case number may follow a case maker’s or production sequence; a movement serial may be different. Hand-scratched numbers can be repair notes rather than factory identifiers.

Gallet’s current FAQ distinguishes the reference, which identifies a model’s design, movement and features, from the serial, which identifies an individual watch. It says these details may appear on purchase documents or the caseback. That guidance concerns current watches: vintage Gallets may have different number placement, multiple markings, or no surviving paperwork.

Compare the whole configuration
For a chronograph, note the number and arrangement of registers, their scales, pusher count and shape, bezel type, and any date or calendar display. Have a watchmaker identify the caliber and photograph the movement and inner caseback. Compare those details with the dial layout, case construction and markings together. A Gallet-signed dial by itself does not establish the exact model or prove that every part is original.
Published examples show why caliber matters. Davidoff Brothers describes a Gallet Dato-Compax with a manual-wound Valjoux 72C chronograph movement and triple calendar; Laurent B. describes a Gallet chronograph with an Excelsior Park 4 caliber. These are useful configuration comparisons, not independent proof of the originality of another watch.

How to estimate when it was made
Use model evidence to establish a production period
Look for dated catalogs, advertisements, archival records and well-documented examples that match the watch’s movement and case configuration. Compare the caliber and chronograph architecture, case and caseback, dial and scales, bezel function, pusher and crown arrangement, and consistency of the markings and parts with the claimed period. Gallet World’s archived Flight Officer material distinguishes generations and gives approximate periods for some variants. Fratello’s historical account discusses early advertising and serial-number cautions. These sources provide model-level context, not the assembly date of a particular watch.

- Single Eye Observation for Precision Vision- Designed for close-up tasks (focal length range from 0.85" to 9.84"), this hands-free magnifying glass with light works best with SINGLE-EYE USE to prevent blurring. Alternating between the two lens barrels helps reduce eye strain and enhances work efficiency. NOTE: Every lens has a fixed focal length (refer to the focal chart). Please slightly adjust the distance between the lens (monocular) and the object to focus and get the best clarity.
- 5 Lens Combos. Comes with 5 crystall-clear acrylic lens pairs (2X, 4X, 6X, 10X, 13X) that combine up to 23X magnification. The quick-swap system lets you change lenses quickly when you need more power to see something small. Rectangular acylic lenses offers larger viewing area than other round shape jewelers magnifying glass in the market. As with any magnifying device, the higher the magnification you choose, the closer you must get to the project to stay in focus.
- Auxiliary Rechargeable LED Lights. Dual LED lights with 2 brightness levels give you amber illumination in dark conditions. The lights of the magnifying glasses for close work can be turned on/off independently, offering flexibility for different tasks. The battery ensures 8-12 hours of continuous use, and it can be fully charged in 1.5 hours via type C cable.
- Detachable & Adjustable. Make it yours! You can adjust the lens angle lens angle (150° range), light position (50° tilt), and distance between two lens barrels (2.24"-2.75"). Swap between magnifying glasses frame & headband to adapt to different head sizes and reduce fatigue during long-term use. Soft nose pads for all-day wear.
- Multifunctional Magnifying Glass. Ideal headband magnifier for watch rapair. Trusted by jewelers, electricians, watchmakers, scale modeler, and hobbyists. Also suitable for micro-soldering, circuit board repairs, gem cutting, model building, coin collection.
Do not treat a serial as a date code
A larger number does not automatically mean a later year. Serial numbers are sequences; they do not inherently encode a production date. Watch Museum’s serial-number explanation notes that numbers cannot be dated without the assigning manufacturer’s records and that movement and case numbers may follow different sequences. No universal public Gallet vintage serial-to-year table is established by the cited sources.
Reference number or serial number: what does the caseback show?
Do not assume every number on the caseback is the model reference or the serial. Gallet describes the reference as identifying the model and the serial as identifying the individual watch, but vintage examples may have more than one number and their placement can vary. Transcribe each number exactly, photograph it in place, and label its location. If you cannot tell what a marking represents, have a watchmaker inspect it rather than assigning it a date or model on appearance alone.

When to seek an authentication assessment
If identification matters for a purchase, sale, insurance or inheritance, arrange an inspection by an experienced vintage-watch specialist. Similarity to a documented example is not authentication: a plausible combination can still include replacement or altered parts.
Gallet’s official FAQ says owners can request a Certificate of Authenticity through a Gallet service center or by bringing the watch to a Breitling Boutique, which routes it to a Gallet Main Center. Fees and return times vary. An official assessment is the appropriate route when you need the brand’s review rather than an informal visual match.

Historical context—and what it can tell you
Gallet’s official press and history page says Julien Gallet founded the business in La Chaux-de-Fonds in 1826 and lists milestones including 1899, 1903, 1938, 1939, 1940 and 2026. The AWCI’s April 2004 Horological Times response says a New York branch began in 1864 and describes the company’s pocket-watch exports and later wristwatch production. This history helps place Gallet’s work in context; none of these company-level dates identifies when an individual watch was made.
Likewise, a specialist archive describing one Dato-Compax as circa the 1960s or a dealer listing one Excelsior Park 4 chronograph as circa the 1940s documents those sellers’ descriptions of particular examples. Neither establishes a universal production span or supplies a serial-date rule.
