Rinse the watch in fresh water after swimming in the sea. OMEGA’s user manual gives that as its core saltwater instruction, and it adds that bracelets, rubber straps and water-resistant cases should be cleaned with soapy water and a soft toothbrush, then dried with a soft cloth. Keep solvents, detergents, perfumes, cosmetics and insect repellents away from the watch, and have its water resistance checked once a year at an authorized OMEGA service centre.
The after-swim routine
The manual’s wording is direct: “Always rinse your watch in fresh water after swimming.” It is an unattributed instruction in the manual, not a quotation from a named person. Work through these steps each time the watch has been in the sea:
- Rinse with fresh water. Run clean tap water over the case and bracelet or strap. OMEGA does not specify a soak time, so a rinse is the step the manufacturer describes.
- Clean the watch if salt or grime remains. For a metal bracelet, rubber strap or water-resistant case, use soapy water and a toothbrush. The manual does not name a soap type, brush stiffness, water pressure or soaking duration, so keep the process gentle and avoid improvised methods.
- Dry it with a soft cloth. Dry the case, crystal, bracelet or strap before storing the watch.
The manual does not say whether the strap must be removed for cleaning, so do not treat removal as a required step. Metal and rubber straps are covered by the same cleaning instruction, and the sources do not establish that either strap type is safer for saltwater use.
What to keep away from the watch
OMEGA warns that the following products may damage the bracelet, case or gaskets:

The manual does not mention chlorine by name. If you also swim in chlorinated water, the only step the manufacturer describes is the same fresh-water rinse, and the list above still applies to any cleaning product you choose.
Water resistance is a present-condition question
A listed water-resistance rating describes the model specification, not the seal of the particular watch on your wrist. OMEGA’s Japan-market listing for the 42 mm Seamaster Diver 300M, reference 210.32.42.20.06.002, gives 30 bar, 300 metres or 1,000 feet. That figure applies to that reference and that listing, and should not be extended to every Diver 300M variant.

- Omega Seamaster Automatic Chronometer Black Dial Men's Watch 210.30.42.20.01.001
OMEGA identifies two conditions that can reduce water resistance over time: ageing gaskets and impacts to the crown. Because a watch that has been used for years may have aged gaskets, the rating is no guarantee of current sealing. OMEGA recommends a water-resistance test once a year at an authorized OMEGA service centre.
Crown and chronograph controls
Screw-down crown
OMEGA’s manuals say to secure the screw-down crown after handling it and not to manipulate the crown while the watch is in water. Follow the crown instructions in the manual for your exact model before operating it.

Chronograph pushers
The general chronograph warning says not to operate the pushers underwater. The manual makes an exception for certain chronograph models, specifically the Seamaster Diver 300M and Planet Ocean 600M chronograph models. Do not apply that exception to every Diver 300M, and do not operate a control underwater unless your model’s manual confirms it.

The annual water-resistance check is the interval OMEGA recommends for testing the seal. It is separate from routine servicing. OMEGA’s general operating instructions state that the company cannot give a universal service frequency, because the interval depends on model, climate and owner care. Those instructions give 5 to 8 years as a general service guideline. This is background for the whole range, not a saltwater-specific interval for each Seamaster Diver 300M reference. The publication dates of these instructions are not stated in the materials reviewed.

If the watch has taken a knock to the case or crown, or you notice any sign of water inside the case, do not wait for the annual check. Arrange testing at an authorized OMEGA service centre straight away.
