For an assembled onyx-dial watch, begin with a clean, soft, dry cloth and almost no pressure. Do not rub over dust or grit, use polish or household cleaners, or wet the watch unless its manufacturer confirms that the exact model can be cleaned that way. Onyx is vulnerable to scratches and knocks, and the watch’s case, seals, and water resistance add risks that do not apply to a loose stone.
Safest way to clean an onyx dial
- Take the watch off and prepare a clean area. Work in good light and keep dust and grit away from the dial. A particle caught beneath a cloth can be dragged across the polished surface.
- Use a clean, soft, dry cloth. Wipe gently, with very light pressure. Piaget recommends a soft dry cloth for mineral stones, including onyx: Piaget’s care guidance. A soft microfiber watch cloth is a practical option, but it is not a guarantee against scratches or a stated requirement.
- Stop rather than increase pressure. If the cloth catches, the dial seems loose, or a mark remains after gentle dry wiping, do not scrape or polish it. Ask the watch’s manufacturer or a qualified watchmaker for model-specific advice.
Cartier cautions that “Onyx should be handled with care as it is sensitive to scratches and knocks.” Its onyx jewelry instructions describe warm soapy water and a small brush, while Piaget’s guidance for mineral stones says to avoid water and soap and use a dry cloth. These are instructions for different items and contexts—not a universal method for an assembled watch. For an unknown watch model, dry wiping is the more cautious first step.

What to keep away from the dial
- Grit and abrasive materials: Avoid abrasive pads, powders, polishing compounds, scraping, and firm rubbing. Onyx is susceptible to scratches and abrasion, as Cartier and Van Cleef & Arpels warn.
- Solvents and household chemicals: Cartier says onyx does not tolerate solvents. Piaget also advises avoiding chemicals and soap around mineral stones. Keep perfume, lotion, hand sanitizer, cosmetics, and cleaning products from contacting the dial.
- Unapproved jewelry cleaners and ultrasonic cleaning: Do not assume a cleaner made for jewelry is safe for a watch dial. Swarovski’s watch-care guidance warns against sonic cleaners and commercial jewelry cleaners containing ammonia or alcohol; that advice is specific to its watches, but it is a reason not to use such products on an unknown watch without the maker’s approval.
- Water and immersion without confirmation: Water resistance varies by model, and seals can deteriorate. TAG Heuer advises against immersing a watch in its general cleaning instructions; Cartier says to check the watch’s water-resistance information and crown position before water exposure. Why advice for onyx jewelry may not suit an onyx watch
A loose piece of onyx jewelry has no watch case, crown, movement, or seals to protect. Cartier’s jewelry guidance allows warm soapy water and a small brush for onyx, but Piaget recommends dry cleaning for mineral stones. Watch cleaning instructions also vary: TAG Heuer says not to immerse a watch, while Cartier emphasizes checking water resistance, crown position, and seal condition. The exact dial material and the watch maker’s instructions matter; when those details are unknown, do not transfer a jewelry-cleaning method to the assembled watch.

How to prevent scratches between cleanings
- Store the watch in its original box or separately in a fabric-lined case, so the dial cannot rub against jewelry or hard objects. Piaget and Van Cleef & Arpels recommend separate storage for stone creations.
- Keep it away from direct contact with cosmetics, perfume, lotion, sanitizer, and cleaning chemicals.
- Handle it carefully around hard surfaces and other jewelry; a knock can damage the stone even if the dial was not being cleaned.
When to ask a watchmaker for help
Seek advice from the manufacturer or a qualified watchmaker if the dial is scratched, chipped, stained, loose, or persistently dull. Piaget advises taking a stone that remains dull to a dealer, and TAG Heuer directs owners to an official service center for complete maintenance. No at-home onyx dial-polishing procedure is established in these care instructions. Rolex’s polishing guidance concerns its case and bracelet, not permission to polish an onyx dial at home; its care FAQ says professional polishing of those parts should be done only by an Official Rolex Service Center.
