How do I care for a Longines Spirit watch?
Use the instructions for your watch’s exact reference rather than assuming every model in the Spirit collection has the same specifications. The reference number and water-resistance marking on the case back help identify which manual and guidance apply. Longines provides a manual lookup by watch name, reference, or calibre on its care instructions page.

For routine water-related care, Longines recommends rinsing the watch in fresh water after contact with seawater and having its water resistance checked once a year by an approved Longines Service Centre. Saltwater exposure is a reason to rinse; the annual check is a separate maintenance recommendation, not a full movement-service interval. The instruction appears in Longines’ English L896 instruction manual, dated April 28, 2025.
Can I swim with a Longines Spirit?
That depends on the exact reference, its condition, and whether its crown is secured correctly. Before immersion, Longines says the crown and any push-pieces must be pushed in or screwed down. Never operate the crown or push-pieces underwater. For a screw-in crown, follow the reference’s manual for the correct way to secure it.

Water resistance can be affected by gaskets drying out or by an impact to the crown, according to Longines. So a rating printed on the case back is not a guarantee that a watch remains watertight, especially after damage or as it ages. If the watch has taken a blow, the crown seems loose, or you are unsure about its sealing, have an approved service centre check it before taking it into water.
One current US example is the 42 mm Spirit reference L3.811.4.93.6, which Longines lists with a screw-in crown and 10-bar water resistance on its product page. Longines’ L896 manual associates 10 bar with a 100 m overpressure equivalent under standard ISO 22810. That figure is not a blanket promise of safe use at that depth or for every water activity; use the rating and instructions for your own reference, and account for the watch’s condition and crown position.
How often should I have it serviced?
Water-resistance check
Longines recommends a water-resistance check once a year at an approved Longines Service Centre. This is the stated interval for checking water resistance; it should not be mistaken for a universal schedule for a full movement overhaul.

Movement service or repair
The cited Longines guidance does not establish one full-service interval for every Spirit reference. For reference-specific advice or a repair, consult the manual and contact an official Longines dealer or approved service centre. Longines says approved servicing is guaranteed to comply with its standards; its warranty information sets out the manufacturer’s terms and exclusions.
The current Longines warranty page states a 24-month warranty on watches generally and a five-year warranty for mechanical watches purchased from January 1, 2021, subject to its terms. It also states a 24-month warranty on service operations. Watch coverage requires a dated, fully completed certificate from an official dealer. Check the terms and your own documents for an individual claim; the page’s terms may change.

Routine rinsing
After seawater contact, rinse the watch in fresh water as Longines recommends. Follow the exact reference manual for any further cleaning instructions. Do not treat rinsing as a substitute for a water-resistance check.
Opening the watch or attempting a repair
Longines says not to open the watch yourself. For service or repair, use an official Longines dealer or approved Longines Service Centre. The manufacturer’s warranty terms exclude damage linked to unsuitable use, neglect, accidents, failure to follow the manual, and handling or repairs by non-approved parties. This describes Longines’ stated manufacturer-warranty terms; check your warranty certificate and applicable consumer rights for your circumstances.
