Jewellery Consignment vs Selling Outright: Which Is Safer and Better Value?

An outright offer is more predictable; consignment may reach more buyers but brings commissions, delay and uncertainty. Compare net proceeds and written risk terms.

Neither route is always safer or more profitable. Selling outright gives you a specific offer to accept or reject; consignment may reach more retail or collector buyers, but you wait for a sale and pay commission and any agreed costs. Compare the likely money you will actually receive, how soon you need it, and what happens if the item is lost, damaged or unsold—not an outright offer against a consignment asking price.

What “better value” means

Compare expected net proceeds: the amount left after commission, expenses and any price reductions. A consignment estimate or asking price is not money in hand. An appraisal is not a binding offer either. GIA describes fair market value as an appraiser’s opinion of what a willing buyer would pay a willing seller; quality, availability, desirability and local market conditions can affect that baseline. It does not guarantee a buyer or a particular sale price. GIA’s consumer guide to selling gemstones and jewelry explains the distinction.

There is no established general payout advantage or safety ranking for jewelry consignment versus outright sale. Results depend on the item, buyer, contract and location. Evaluate each offer on its own terms.

How the two routes differ

Question Selling outright Consignment or auction
Payout A definite offer, subject to its terms. Confirm whether it is final and what could change it. A contingent share of the realized sale price, less commission and agreed expenses.
Payment timing Confirm the payment method and timing before transferring the piece. Payment generally follows a sale and may depend on the buyer paying. Sotheby’s says it sends payment within 45 days of the sale date if it has received the buyer’s payment; its contract governs reserve, commission and expenses. This is Sotheby’s policy, not a universal deadline. Sotheby’s seller information.
Certainty of sale If the offer is firm, accepted and paid according to its terms, there is a buyer. Check any conditions. A sale is not guaranteed. The item may remain unsold or fail to meet a reserve. Ask about return, relisting and any associated fees.
Costs Ask about deductions or conditions that could reduce the offer. Commission and agreed expenses can reduce proceeds; costs may include shipping, insurance, marketing or other charges. Sotheby’s states consignors are responsible for packing, shipping and insurance charges. Other businesses may have different terms.
Price control The buyer proposes an offer; you decide whether to accept it. The contract governs reserve or asking price, commission and any price changes. Clarify who can authorize a markdown.
Custody and transit Establish when ownership and risk transfer, and who insures the piece until then. Confirm who holds the item, who arranges and pays for shipping, and the insurance limit and exclusions during custody and transit.

When an outright sale may suit you

  • You need liquidity on a predictable timetable and have received an acceptable, clearly stated offer.
  • You prefer not to wait for a buyer or manage the uncertainty of an unsold item.
  • The written terms make payment, transfer of ownership and any deductions clear.

“Outright” does not by itself guarantee immediate payment or remove risk. Confirm the payment trigger and method, and do not hand over the jewelry until you understand the transfer and custody terms.

When consignment may be worth considering

  • The piece is distinctive and may benefit from access to a specialist retail or collector audience.
  • You can wait for a sale and accept that it may not sell.
  • You have a written estimate of likely net proceeds after commission, expenses and possible discounting.

GIA notes that sellers are usually paid only after a consigned item sells and that the jeweler customarily keeps a percentage as commission. The amount, payment timeline and other charges depend on the agreement. GIA’s guide describes consignment alongside other possible routes, including auction, jeweler buyback, trade-in and resale businesses. Sotheby’s describes specialist jewelry consignment for fine, signed and vintage pieces and offers estimates, but eligibility and outcome depend on the item and current terms. Sotheby’s jewelry consignment information.

How to compare the money you could receive

  1. Get the outright terms in writing. Ask whether the offer is firm, what could change it, how and when you will be paid, and whether any deductions apply.
  2. Ask the consignee for a realistic sale scenario. Find out the expected sale price, commission, every additional charge, and your estimated net proceeds. Treat an estimate as an estimate, not a guaranteed result.
  3. Test the downside. Ask what happens if the item is discounted, does not sell, or sells below a reserve. Include return shipping or other unsold-item charges in the comparison.
  4. Account for the wait. A higher possible net amount may not suit you if payment is uncertain or delayed. Compare the timing against your need for the money.

For a Sotheby’s sale, its published seller information says payment is sent within 45 days after the sale date if the buyer has paid; proceeds are the hammer price less commission and agreed expenses. Those figures and terms apply to Sotheby’s, not to consignment generally. Sotheby’s seller information.

Use an appraisal for the right question

An appraisal can help describe and value a piece, but its conclusion depends on the appraiser’s research and experience and on the valuation’s purpose. Insurance replacement value, for example, answers a different question from a likely sale price. Ask for a valuation basis relevant to selling and avoid treating an appraisal figure as a buyer’s offer. GIA’s appraisal guidance recommends asking whether the appraiser is independent, what training and experience they have, whether they carry insurance while holding the jewelry, the fee and timing, and what the report includes. It advises seeking both gemological and appraisal training and says GIA does not certify appraisers or appraise jewelry.

Steps to reduce risk before handing over the piece

  1. Document what you have. Record maker’s marks, metal and stone details, condition and provenance. Gather receipts and laboratory reports if available. Keep copies; documentation does not guarantee a particular resale price.
  2. Consider an independent appraisal if warranted. Ask the appraiser to state the purpose and valuation basis. GIA’s guidance says appraisers should have gemological and appraisal training; GIA itself does not appraise jewelry. GIA appraisal tips.
  3. Get more than one written offer or route where practical. Compare an outright amount with a realistic consignment net, including costs and timing. Availability of multiple offers is not guaranteed.
  4. Read the complete agreement before surrendering the item. Check duration, reserve or asking price, commission, additional fees, discount authority, insurance and liability limits, shipping, payment trigger, and return costs if unsold. Ask what the contract says about damage or business closure.
  5. Clarify custody at every stage. Confirm who is responsible for packing, shipping, insurance and loss or damage, including the coverage limit and exclusions, before delivery or shipment.

GIA’s selling guidance and Sotheby’s published terms explain different parts of this decision, but neither establishes a universal winner. Consignment and auction terms are contractual and vary by business, item and location; the guidance here is general rather than jurisdiction-specific legal advice.
