Expose the watch’s dial to bright light. Citizen says Eco-Drive watches convert natural or artificial light into stored energy, with direct sunlight providing the fastest, most efficient charging. The time required depends on the watch’s caliber and the light available, so use the estimates below as examples—not a universal charging schedule.
How do I charge my Citizen Eco-Drive watch?
- Expose the dial to light. Place the watch where light reaches its face. Indoor light can charge it, but bright direct sunlight is faster, according to Citizen’s Eco-Drive overview.
- Check your watch’s caliber. Find the caliber number engraved on the caseback, then look up the matching guide in Citizen’s manuals and setting instructions. Charging requirements vary by movement.
- Allow enough time. A watch that has stopped or is showing a low-charge warning may need much longer than a brief top-up. Follow the instructions for your caliber and keep the dial exposed to light.
Citizen’s general estimates for basic analog Eco-Drive watches illustrate how much the light source matters. The figures are approximate and depend on the watch and conditions; they are not guaranteed for every model.

Why is my Eco-Drive second hand jumping every two seconds?
On models with an insufficient-charge warning, a second hand that advances once every two seconds indicates low charge. Citizen says it should return to normal movement once sufficiently charged. Put the dial in bright light and consult the caliber-specific charging instructions.

The duration after the warning begins is movement-specific. For example, the B620 manual says that if a B620 is not charged for eight days or longer after the warning starts, it will run out of power and stop. Do not apply that eight-day figure to other Eco-Drive calibers.
How can I prevent low-charge problems?
- Keep the dial exposed to light regularly rather than leaving the watch covered or stored in darkness for long periods.
- If sleeves often cover the dial, the watch may receive less light and need supplemental charging. Citizen notes this in its B620 instructions.
- For B620 watches specifically, Citizen recommends five to six hours of direct sunlight at least once a month. This is guidance for that movement, not a universal schedule for all Eco-Drive watches.
- Avoid excessive heat. The B620 manual cautions against charging at about 60°C (140°F) or higher. Follow the manual for your own caliber and avoid hot enclosed locations.
Citizen says a fully charged Eco-Drive can run for over six months in darkness, but reserve varies by model; select watches with power-saving functions may last longer. Do not treat that figure as a guarantee for every watch.

What if the second hand still jumps after charging?
A full recharge and a reset are separate steps. Citizen says some watches may need a reset after recharging before normal hand movement resumes. The correct procedure depends on the movement and watch type.

Find the correct reset procedure
Identify the caliber from the caseback and use its manual. Citizen gives simple crown procedures for some basic two- or three-hand watches, with different crown positions for models with and without a date. Multifunction watches—including perpetual calendars, dive watches, chronographs, Skyhawk, world time, and satellite models—require the reset procedure in their own instructions. Do not apply a generic reset to an unidentified watch.

If the warning does not clear
If substantial light exposure and the correct full-recharge and reset steps do not restore normal operation, contact Citizen support or a qualified watch service provider. Persistent two-second movement alone does not establish that the power cell has failed; troubleshooting depends on the caliber and watch type. Citizen’s reset guidance is at “I have recharged my watch but the second hand still jumps.”
