Take the watch out of the dark and point its dial toward direct sunlight. A stopped Eco-Drive may have too little power reserve; Citizen says the time needed to resume normal operation depends on the movement, so check the manual for your watch’s caliber rather than relying on a universal charging time. If it still will not run after charging, contact a Citizen service center.
What to do first
- Expose the dial to direct sunlight. Citizen’s stopped-watch guidance recommends direct sunlight to charge a watch whose power reserve may be insufficient: Citizen: “My Eco-Drive watch has stopped. What can I do?”
- Keep the dial facing the light. The solar panel is beneath the dial, so positioning the face toward the light helps it receive illumination. Avoid leaving the watch under a sleeve or other covering while charging.
- Check the movement-specific manual. Find the movement or caliber number on the watch or its documentation, then use Citizen’s manual or charging guidance for that movement to determine the expected charging time.
Some Citizen manuals describe a quick-start function: a stopped watch may begin running again after exposure to light. That is model-specific, not a guarantee for every Eco-Drive. If yours starts, continue charging it as its manual directs, then set the correct time if needed.

How long should you charge it?
There is no single charging time for every Citizen Eco-Drive. Citizen’s estimates differ by movement, by light intensity, and by outcome: the time to resume normal operation is not the same as the time to reach a full charge. The following are examples for watches discharged to the point of stopping, under continuous exposure to the stated conditions. They are manufacturer estimates, not a prediction for other movements.

These times are from Citizen Watch Global Network’s movement-specific guidance for the A010, F158 and F990. Actual charging depends on the light reaching the panel and the watch’s movement. Do not use one movement’s figures to estimate another’s.

Does indoor light work?
Indoor light can provide some charge, but Citizen’s guidance says direct sunlight is more efficient. The A010 and F990 charging pages warn that fluorescent lamps and interior lighting do not provide enough illumination for efficient charging. If the watch is stopped, use suitable outdoor light when practical and check your movement’s instructions for other lighting conditions.
Charge it without overheating
Keep the watch away from excessive heat while it is exposed to light. Citizen cautions against charging at around 60°C (140°F) or higher. Do not leave it on a hot vehicle dashboard or place it close to heat-producing incandescent or halogen lamps; these can create unsafe temperatures even when the dial is well lit.

If it still does not run
Use the manual for the watch’s movement and contact a Citizen service center if appropriate charging does not restore operation. Citizen’s stopped-watch guidance does not identify a failed component or recommend that owners open the case or replace the rechargeable cell themselves.
