To charge a solar watch, point its dial toward bright light and let the light reach the face. Direct sunlight is efficient, and fluorescent light can also charge some models. When you take the watch off, leave it somewhere bright rather than in a dark drawer for a long time. Keep it away from excessive heat: strong light helps, but a hot dashboard or a lamp placed too close can damage the watch. For exact charging times and temperature limits, follow the manual for your watch’s specific model.
How to charge a solar watch safely
- Expose the dial to light. The solar panel is beneath the face, where it converts light into electrical energy stored in the watch’s rechargeable cell. Citizen says fluorescent lamps can charge Eco-Drive watches, but recommends direct sunlight for efficient charging. Aim the dial toward the light source. Citizen’s charging FAQ and the Casio Module 5724 guide describe these basics.
- Make sure light actually reaches the face. A sleeve can block charging while you wear the watch. Casio advises avoiding clothing that covers any part of the face; Citizen notes that illumination can be weaker in winter, and sleeves may reduce exposure. Citizen’s seasonal charging guidance explains why a watch may charge more slowly under those conditions.
- Choose a bright place that stays cool. Do not leave the watch in direct sun where it can overheat. Citizen advises against charging an Eco-Drive at about 60°C/140°F or higher and recommends at least 50 cm between the watch and an incandescent or halogen lamp. A vehicle dashboard exposed to sunlight can become dangerously hot. Casio gives similar cautions for its Module 5724, including dashboards and proximity to incandescent, camera, or halogen lamps. How long should you charge it?
There is no single charging duration for every solar watch. Required exposure depends on the model, the strength and direction of the light, the season, and features that consume power. Use the charging-time and power-reserve information in your watch’s own manual rather than relying on a fixed number of hours.

Some manufacturer guidance is specific to one model. For example, Citizen’s F990 page recommends direct sunlight for 5 or 6 hours at least every half-month for that model; it also says the watch’s large-capacity cell takes longer to charge than other Eco-Drive watches. Where to store a solar watch when you are not wearing it
Choose a bright location where light can reach the dial. Long storage in darkness can deplete the stored energy and eventually stop the watch. Citizen’s B8079_12 manual advises putting the watch in a bright place when you take it off, and Casio gives the same general direction in its Module 5724 guide.

A bright place is not necessarily a hot one. Avoid sun-heated car interiors and other locations where the watch may become excessively warm. If you need to store it in a case or drawer, consult the watch’s manual for guidance on maintaining its charge during extended non-use.

Give the dial suitable light exposure while keeping the watch within its manufacturer’s temperature limits, then allow time for the model-specific charging requirements. If it remains stopped or does not behave normally, consult the manual or contact the manufacturer or an authorized service provider. Do not open the case or attempt a rechargeable-cell replacement based on general charging advice; service procedures are model-specific.
