To check whether an affordable dive watch is safe to use in water, read its exact water-resistance marking, inspect it for visible damage, and have a watchmaker test it to that model’s specification. A rating or a clean-looking case cannot prove that an older watch is still sealed. Don’t dunk an unverified watch to find out.
What the water-resistance rating does—and doesn’t—tell you
Find the marking on the dial or case back, then identify the exact model if possible. Citizen advises owners to check the level shown on the dial and/or case back; the model’s own instructions help establish which specification applies. Inspect the watch before considering water use
Look for a cracked or damaged crystal, a loose or damaged crown, damaged pushers, signs the case has been opened, or a history of impact or water exposure. These are reasons to keep the watch out of water until it has been checked. Aging gaskets and shocks to parts such as the crown, pushers, or crystal can affect resistance, according to TAG Heuer.
This is only a visual screening. Seals can deteriorate without obvious external signs, so an intact appearance does not certify that the case is watertight.

Have a watchmaker test it to its specification
Ask a competent watchmaker or the brand’s authorized service channel for a water-resistance test that matches the exact watch specification. When arranging the check, ask whether the provider will:
- Test to the specification for your exact model, rather than a generic pressure level.
- Inspect the crown, case back, crystal, and seals as appropriate.
- Explain what a failed test means and whether repair or seal replacement is needed.
Service availability and cost depend on the watch and location; the cited manufacturer guidance does not establish local prices.

Don’t use household water as a diagnostic test
A bowl, shower, sink, or pool cannot tell you whether the watch will withstand its specified test pressure. The manufacturer guidance describes controlled test equipment, not household dunking as a safe diagnostic. If a compromised seal lets water in, the damage may be worse than the uncertainty you were trying to resolve.
If you see condensation inside the watch or know it has accidentally contacted water, arrange prompt inspection rather than continuing to wear it in wet conditions. Jaeger-LeCoultre’s service guidance

When to repeat the check
Water resistance can change as seals age or after damage or case opening. Get the watch checked before relying on it for swimming or diving if its condition or service history is uncertain, and after an impact or repair that may have affected the case.
There is no universal retest interval established for every watch. Jaeger-LeCoultre recommends regular checks, especially before prolonged or repeated immersion. Hamilton recommends an annual check for Hamilton watches; treat that as Hamilton’s recommendation for its watches, not a schedule that automatically applies to every brand.
