Serial numbers, warranty records and model references can help you spot inconsistencies, but none of those checks alone authenticates the physical watch.
What to check before buying a Breitling
If you are considering a remote purchase, ask the seller for clear photos of the watch’s front, caseback and serial and model-reference engravings, along with the warranty card and purchase documents. These help you compare details; photographs and paperwork cannot prove that the watch itself is genuine.

Compare the identifiers with the records
Breitling says serial numbers have been unique to each watch since 2000. The serial can appear on the caseback and purchase documents, including the International Warranty certificate. Compare the number and model reference across the watch and records. A mismatch, an illegible engraving or a seller’s refusal to provide documentation is a reason to pause and seek professional assessment—not, by itself, a conclusive verdict.

Breitling’s service pages may use the first six characters of a caseback model or serial for model-specific service information, but that lookup is not described as a substitute for authentication. Check activated warranty details
When warranty information has been activated, it can include the model name, model reference, serial number, activation date and international warranty period. You can access the information by scanning the warranty-card QR code or by asking an official Breitling retailer or boutique. Use it to cross-check the watch’s identifiers, not as proof that the physical watch is genuine: a card or matching record is distinct from Breitling’s authentication analysis. Interpret the model reference narrowly
Breitling says a caseback model reference with B as its second letter and a following two-digit number from 01 to 35 (B01–B35) identifies a watch with a Breitling Manufacture mechanical movement. This is a movement-identification rule, not a complete authenticity check.

How to get Breitling’s authentication certificate
- Find an official intake route. Use Breitling’s stores locator to find a boutique, authorized retailer or service center. Breitling says a watch can be taken to a service center or dropped off at an authorized retailer.
- Request a Certificate of Authenticity. Ask the service center or boutique how to submit the watch for authentication and confirm the current local process before handing it over or shipping it.
- Allow for analysis at a Main Center. Breitling states: “An authentication includes the analysis of the watch and the delivery of a Certificate of Authenticity.” The certificate process is the brand’s assessment of the watch, unlike a serial or warranty-record check.
- Confirm fees, timing and possible parts charges. Breitling says fees and return times vary. If non-compliant parts need to be exchanged to restore the watch, those replacement parts are invoiced separately.
What the certificate does—and does not—answer
The authentication process answers whether Breitling assesses the watch as authentic; it is not a valuation. Breitling says its service centers and boutiques do not assess a watch’s value through this process. If you need a market value or appraisal, treat that as a separate question.

Service acceptance is also not guaranteed. Breitling’s terms say service may be refused if an initial examination reveals counterfeit parts. Contact the service center and understand its terms before sending a watch, rather than assuming it will be accepted for service.

Warranty duration is determined by movement category and terms, not by whether a particular serial-number check passes. Breitling states that its international warranty runs for two years from purchase for watches without a Breitling Manufacture mechanical movement and five years from purchase for watches with one, subject to the warranty terms. A valid warranty record is useful context, but it is not the Certificate of Authenticity.

- Do not rely on a serial lookup alone. A number or matching document is a preliminary consistency check; Breitling describes authentication as analysis of the watch.
- Do not treat a QR code or warranty card as conclusive. They can help cross-check activated records, but do not replace physical assessment.
- Do not open the case for a DIY movement inspection unless you are qualified. The official guidance does not provide a visual checklist that can establish authenticity, and unqualified handling risks damaging the watch.
