Find your Breitling’s reference and manual
Breitling says the reference identifies a watch’s model, movement and features, and its owner documentation—including user manuals—is available through Breitling Passport. Use the manual for the exact reference before moving the crown. A model name or collection alone may not identify the correct procedure.

The distinction matters because Breitling publishes different setting sequences for mechanical and quartz watches, and a calendar may show a date or both a day and date. Some watches also have a screw-locked crown, while others do not.

Before setting a mechanical watch’s date
For the mechanical models covered by the cited Breitling manuals, the date mechanism is active between 8 pm and 3 am. Those manuals warn against adjusting the calendar or moving the hands backward during that interval. The warning is model-specific evidence, not a claim that every Breitling caliber behaves identically; follow the manual for your reference.

Set the date and time on a Navitimer 8 Automatic
The following sequence is for the Navitimer 8 Automatic manual’s mechanical date example. It should not be assumed to apply to other Breitling watches.
- Unscrew the water-resistant crown by turning it counterclockwise.
- Wind the watch by turning the crown clockwise approximately 40 times.
- Pull the crown to position 2 and set the calendar to the day before the date you want.
- Pull the crown to position 3. Turn the hands forward past midnight until the date changes to the correct date.
- Continue turning the hands forward to set the correct hour and minute.
- Push the crown back to position 1. Press gently, turn gently clockwise and tighten until you feel resistance. Do not force it.
Using the forward-through-midnight sequence lets the date advance into place before you set the final time. If your watch’s crown positions or instructions differ, stop and use its own manual.

Quartz watches can use a different sequence
Breitling’s Professional Endurance Pro manual gives a separate procedure. For that model, pull the crown to position 2 and turn it counterclockwise to set the calendar to the day before the target date. Pull to position 3, then turn the hands forward until the correct date changes into place at midnight. Set the hour and minute, then return the crown to position 1.

For a day-and-date calendar
The Premier Automatic Day-Date manual instructs owners to set both the day and date to the preceding day, advance the hands forward until the date changes at midnight, and then set the correct time. It includes the mechanical date-change caution above.
A current Premier Automatic Day & Date 40 product example is described by Breitling as self-winding mechanical, with a Breitling 45 movement and day-and-date calendar. That specification does not establish that every Premier reference has the same mechanism or setting steps; check the exact reference’s manual.

Handle a screw-down crown without force
Not every Breitling crown is screw-locked. If your model has a screw-down crown, follow its manual to release it before adjustment. The Colt Skyracer manual, for example, says to press gently while turning the crown clockwise to secure it, tighten only until resistance is felt, and not force it. If the crown will not move normally or does not seat as expected, stop and consult the model manual or Breitling service.
