The most reliable way to confirm a pre-owned Rolex is through Rolex’s Certified Pre-Owned (RCPO) programme: Rolex says only Rolex can confirm a watch’s authenticity. If the watch is not being sold as RCPO, treat visual checks and paperwork as preliminary, and make the purchase conditional on inspection by Rolex or a qualified watchmaker.
What is the most reliable way to authenticate a pre-owned Rolex?
Rolex’s official route is its Rolex Certified Pre-Owned programme. Rolex says eligible second-hand watches are returned to its workshops, where their original configuration is verified and components—from the case and bracelet to the movement—are checked and authenticated. The watches are serviced, examined and tested before sale.

Rolex states: “Only Rolex can confirm the authenticity of a Rolex watch.” Its programme applies to second-hand watches at least two years old that are offered by participating Official Rolex Retailers. Participation and availability should be checked in the market where you are buying.

An RCPO watch comes with a distinct seal and guarantee card, plus a two-year international guarantee from the date of purchase. Confirm that these items accompany the exact watch and that the purchase documents identify the retailer and sale date.

How to check a watch before you buy
- Check the sale route. Ask whether the exact watch is being sold under Rolex Certified Pre-Owned. Verify the retailer’s participation using Rolex’s current retailer locator and FAQ or its official local retailer listing.
- If it is RCPO, match the programme documents to the transaction. Check that the seal and guarantee card are supplied with the watch, and that the paperwork records the participating retailer and purchase date.
- If it is not RCPO, arrange an independent inspection before payment. Ask Rolex or a qualified watchmaker to examine the movement and confirm that the watch’s components and configuration match the claimed model. Make the sale contingent on a satisfactory inspection.
- Ask about condition separately. Request relevant service records and a condition assessment. Authenticity does not establish that a watch is in good condition or performing to a particular standard.
- Walk away if verification is blocked. If the seller refuses an independent inspection or offers assurances that cannot be substantiated, do not proceed.
Can you authenticate a Rolex by looking at it?
No visual inspection can establish authenticity on its own. A loupe may help you examine exterior details, but it cannot verify the movement or confirm that the watch’s components match its original configuration. Rolex’s stated process involves workshop checks of the watch and its components, so a photo review or in-person look should be treated only as a preliminary screen.
Do the box and papers prove a Rolex is real?
No. A box, loose papers, a serial number, or a seller-created certificate is not a substitute for authentication. Rolex’s RCPO seal and guarantee card are documents issued as part of that specific programme; their presence in a different sale does not by itself prove the watch is genuine. Check any documents against the actual RCPO transaction rather than treating packaging as proof.

Does an authentic Rolex necessarily perform like a new watch?
No. Authenticity, condition and performance are different questions. Rolex notes that some of the oldest watches in its RCPO programme may differ from new watches in waterproofness and original precision. Do not infer water resistance from appearance or authenticity; ask for the condition and service information relevant to the particular watch.

RCPO is a specific sales and certification route, not a general authentication service for every second-hand Rolex. Rolex describes participating retailers as the sellers of programme watches; its public materials do not establish that every retailer offers standalone authentication for watches bought elsewhere.
