Apple Watch can estimate your sleeping respiratory rate—the number of breaths you take per minute—when sleep tracking is set up and you wear the watch overnight. Find the reading on iPhone in Health → Search → Respiratory → Respiratory Rate; on newer software, you may also find it under Health → Search → Vitals. Treat it as a wellness trend, not a diagnosis or a substitute for medical advice.

What Apple Watch’s respiratory-rate reading means

Respiratory rate is an estimate of breaths per minute during sleep. Apple Watch uses sensors and movement-related information to infer breathing patterns; it does not provide a clinical recording of airflow or count every breath in the way a sleep study can.

Keep the respiratory-rate reading separate from Apple’s other sleep features. They answer different questions:

Feature What it shows What it does not establish
Respiratory Rate An estimated sleeping breathing rate and its trend over time. A diagnosis of a breathing disorder.
Breathing Disturbances A classification of patterns that may suggest interruptions in breathing during sleep. A count of every apnea event or proof that sleep apnea is absent.
Vitals Overnight metrics compared with your personal typical range. A universal medical normal range.

Apple says its Vitals measurements are not intended for medical use. The watch can provide useful context, but it cannot diagnose, rule out, or treat a condition. Apple’s overnight-vitals guidance explains the feature and its limits.

What you need before tracking overnight

  • An Apple Watch that supports sleep tracking, paired with a compatible iPhone.
  • Current iOS and watchOS software.
  • Track Sleep with Apple Watch enabled and Sleep Focus configured for the hours you expect to sleep.
  • The watch worn overnight with its back in contact with your skin.

These are the general sleep-tracking requirements; they are not the same as the stricter requirements for sleep-apnea notifications. Apple’s overnight-vitals instructions specify sleep tracking and Sleep Focus as prerequisites.

Set up sleep tracking and find your respiratory rate

  1. On your iPhone, open Health and set up a sleep schedule if you have not already done so.
  2. Enable Track Sleep with Apple Watch in the sleep setup.
  3. Make sure Sleep Focus is scheduled for the period when you expect to sleep.
  4. Wear your Apple Watch to bed, with a comfortable fit that keeps the sensors against your skin.
  5. The next day, open Health on iPhone and tap Search.
  6. Tap Respiratory, then Respiratory Rate. Review the daily graph and available history.

On newer software, you may also find overnight metrics by opening Health → Search → Vitals, then selecting respiratory rate or Show More Vitals Data. Labels and navigation can vary by software version and language. Apple documents both the respiratory-rate metric and Vitals navigation in its Health guidance and Apple Watch Vitals guide.

Interpret the trend, not one night

Apple’s Vitals feature compares measurements with your personal typical range; it does not provide a single universal threshold that can tell every wearer whether a reading is medically healthy. Look at several nights and changes from your own baseline instead of judging an isolated number.

  • One unusual night: Consider whether something was different and watch the next few nights. A single reading is not a diagnosis.
  • A persistent change: Discuss it with a healthcare professional, especially if you also have symptoms such as loud snoring, gasping, witnessed pauses in breathing, daytime sleepiness, morning headaches, or unexplained fatigue.
  • Other overnight changes: Consider whether several metrics shifted together, rather than treating respiratory rate in isolation.

Illness, congestion, alcohol, some medications, elevation, restless sleep, and changes in routine can affect overnight measurements or breathing-disturbance classifications. Apple lists these as possible influences in its Vitals guidance and sleep-apnea notification information. A change may be worth noting, but it does not by itself identify its cause.

Sleep-apnea notifications are a separate feature

Apple’s sleep-apnea notification feature looks for patterns associated with interruptions in normal breathing; it is not the same as the respiratory-rate number. Apple describes the feature as using small wrist movements detected by the accelerometer. It classifies breathing disturbances as Elevated or Not Elevated and may notify an eligible user after analyzing data over a 30-day period. Apple’s explanation of the method is in its feature announcement.

Eligibility and timing

Apple’s support information lists Apple Watch Series 9 or later, Apple Watch Ultra 2, and Apple Watch SE 3 as compatible models, subject to compatible software and regional availability. The feature is for people aged 18 or older who have not already been diagnosed with sleep apnea. It requires at least 10 nights of data within a 30-day period; Apple analyzes the data every 30 days, so a single night will not produce a notification. Availability varies by country or region. Check Apple’s current requirements and availability guidance for your location before relying on the feature.

Set it up and review its history

  1. Open Health on iPhone and tap Search.
  2. Tap Respiratory.
  3. Under Sleep Apnea Notifications, tap Set Up and follow the prompts, including the age and prior-diagnosis questions.
  4. To review results later, return to Health → Search → Respiratory and open Sleep Apnea Notifications or Breathing Disturbances.

Apple says the breathing-disturbance history can be viewed over the past month, six months, or year. If you receive a notification, you can export a PDF report from Health to discuss with a healthcare provider. See Apple’s setup, review, and report instructions.

What the categories mean

  • Elevated: The feature detected an elevated number of breathing disturbances per hour during sleep. Apple recommends discussing a notification with a doctor.
  • Not Elevated: The feature did not detect an elevated level according to its classification. This is not medical clearance: Apple says not everyone with sleep apnea receives a notification.
  • No Data: The watch could not compute the metric, for example because it was not worn, movement was excessive, breathing could not be measured, or the watch restarted during the sleep session. Apple’s regulatory instructions also describe the need for sufficient data and note that collection can stop if watch storage is full.

For the category definitions and Apple’s cautions, see its sleep-apnea support page and regulatory instructions.

Improve the chance of getting overnight data

These steps can reduce common causes of missing or poor-quality readings; they cannot make a watch measurement clinical-grade.

  • Wear the band snugly enough for skin contact, without making it uncomfortable. Apple says proper fit helps sensors work.
  • Keep the watch back and the skin clean and dry.
  • Wear the watch for the expected sleep period, rather than putting it on only near morning.
  • Charge before bed or establish a charging routine that leaves enough battery for the night.
  • Confirm sleep tracking and Sleep Focus are enabled, and keep iPhone and watch software current.
  • If you change wrists, update the watch setting so it reflects which wrist you are wearing it on.
  • Check whether the watch restarted overnight and whether it has enough available storage.

Apple’s Apple Watch guide describes the importance of skin contact and fit for wrist detection and sensor functions.

Troubleshoot missing or unexpected readings

No respiratory-rate data appears

Check these in order:

  1. Confirm you wore the watch overnight.
  2. Check that Track Sleep with Apple Watch is enabled and Sleep Focus was configured for your sleep period.
  3. Check band fit and confirm the watch back touched your skin.
  4. Check whether the watch had enough battery or restarted during sleep.
  5. Update iPhone and Apple Watch software if updates are available.
  6. Confirm you are viewing the intended Health profile and saved data.
  7. Look under Respiratory Rate, not only under Breathing Disturbances.
  8. Check compatibility for the feature you want: general sleeping respiratory-rate tracking and sleep-apnea notifications do not have identical model requirements.

Breathing-disturbance data says “No Data”

Besides lack of overnight wear, Apple identifies excessive movement, inability to measure breathing, and a watch restart as possible reasons. The feature needs enough overnight data to classify a session, and Apple’s regulatory instructions also note that a full watch storage can stop collection. Check Apple’s instructions for use if the issue persists.

A reading seems unusual

Review the nights around it and consider illness or congestion, alcohol, medication changes, altitude, restless sleep, a short sleep session, or a loose or shifted watch. Compare the pattern with your own history and symptoms rather than assuming the watch has identified a disease.

When to talk with a healthcare professional

Discuss a persistent change in your overnight trend, a sleep-apnea notification, or concerning symptoms with a clinician. If you already have diagnosed sleep apnea, Apple says the notification feature is not intended for you; follow your clinician’s care and monitoring plan rather than using the watch as a replacement.

A “Not Elevated” result does not rule out sleep apnea, and no notification is not proof that everything is fine. Apple says not everyone with sleep apnea receives a notification. The feature is not intended to diagnose, treat, or manage sleep apnea; a clinician can determine whether an evaluation, home sleep-apnea test, or polysomnography is appropriate. Apple’s support guidance states this limitation.

What Apple’s validation does—and does not—show

Apple says it developed and validated the sleep-apnea notification algorithm against clinical reference recordings, including polysomnography and home sleep-apnea testing. In its clinical validation study, Apple reported that every participant identified by the algorithm had at least mild sleep apnea. That is Apple’s reported study result, not a guarantee of accuracy for every person or proof that the watch can diagnose an individual. Read Apple’s technical paper alongside its announcement.

Is Apple Watch a good choice for this?

If you already own an Apple Watch, its built-in Health and Vitals features are a practical way to review passive overnight trends. Buying a watch solely for respiratory-rate tracking is a different decision: choose a model that supports the features you need and is comfortable enough to wear consistently. The heavier Ultra 2 may be a poor fit for someone who prioritizes comfortable overnight wear and does not need its other features. No consumer wearable is a substitute for clinical evaluation when diagnosis or treatment is the goal.
