At the start of an interval, align the zero marker with the minute hand; read elapsed minutes from the hand’s later position on the scale. Then assess visibility in darkness, bezel material, the watch’s movement, and its stated specifications as separate factors. A bezel is a timing aid—not a substitute for dive training, a dive computer, or required dive procedures.
How a dive-timing bezel works
Before timing an interval, rotate the bezel so its zero marker lines up with the minute hand. As time passes, read the minute hand against the bezel’s scale to see how many minutes have elapsed. This is elapsed time, not the time of day.

Seiko explains that its diver’s bezel turns only counterclockwise. If it is accidentally knocked forward, it cannot make the elapsed time appear shorter than it is. Follow the instructions for the exact watch you own. Seiko cautions: “Use the display of the elapsed time by the rotating bezel only as a guide during diving.” Seiko’s instructions describe this use and limitation.
What ISO 6425 tells you—and what it does not
ISO 6425:2018 specifies requirements and test methods for divers’ watches designed for use at depths of at least 100 m, including a secured system for measuring diving time that is visible in darkness. The International Organization for Standardization says the 2018 edition was reviewed and confirmed in 2024, and remains current. Its abstract says: “This document specifies requirements and test methods for divers’ watches and for saturation divers’ watches for use in deep diving.” See the ISO 6425:2018 listing.

The standard concerns the complete watch and its specified requirements and tests. A bezel material, movement type, water-resistance figure, or marketing phrase on its own does not establish that a watch complies. Check the maker’s documentation for the exact model rather than inferring compliance from one feature.
Compare the bezel’s materials without assuming a universal winner
Ceramic is worth considering if resistance to everyday scratching, corrosion, and color change matters to you. Rolex describes the Sea-Dweller’s Cerachrom insert as extremely hard, virtually scratchproof, unaffected in color by ultraviolet rays, and inert against corrosion. Its graduations are recessed and its bezel edge is knurled for grip. Certina likewise describes ceramic components on its DS Action Diver as scratch-resistant and as retaining color and shine. These are manufacturers’ claims about named materials and products, not independent comparative tests of every ceramic, aluminum, or steel bezel.

The cited product information does not establish a reliable ranking for impact damage, repair cost, or future replacement availability across these materials. Don’t assume ceramic is always best or that aluminum or steel is always more durable. Check the exact model’s insert description and ask the maker or an authorized service provider about care and replacement options.
Check markings, visibility, and grip in practice
Read the scale quickly
You should be able to identify the zero marker and read the minute scale without hesitation. Bezel designs vary: inspect how the first segment, minute track, and other markings are laid out rather than assuming every model uses the same scale.

Verify what is visible in darkness
ISO’s scope calls for a diving-time measuring system visible in darkness. Manufacturers implement visibility differently. Rolex describes a luminous zero marker on the Sea-Dweller, while Tissot lists Super-LumiNova on the hands of the Seastar 1000 Powermatic 80, model T1204071105100. Neither description means every bezel numeral or minute marking is luminous. Check the exact watch’s dial and bezel, and identify which timing references are actually visible in low light.
Test whether you can set it deliberately
Bezel edges and grip differ. Rolex says the Sea-Dweller’s knurled edge is intended to aid grip with gloves. If possible, handle the specific watch and see whether you can rotate its bezel deliberately and read its clicks and markings. That is a personal fit check, not an objective performance test.

Keep movement choice separate from bezel function
The movement powers the watch’s timekeeping; the bezel is a manually set elapsed-time scale. The ISO abstract describes the need for a secured diving-time measuring system, not a specific movement type. An automatic or other movement does not, by itself, establish dive-watch compliance. Compare movement separately from bezel direction, legibility, material, and the complete watch’s stated specifications.

Check the manufacturers’ Tissot Seastar 1000 product listing, Certina DS Action Diver product page, and Rolex Sea-Dweller page for their respective descriptions. Tissot’s 300 m figure is the manufacturer’s stated specification for that model, not an independently verified real-world diving limit.

- Confirm the function and direction. For dive timing, check that the watch’s bezel is unidirectional and read the exact manual for its operation.
