The Toledano & Chan B/1 stands out through a deliberately off-kilter silhouette: an angular, asymmetric steel case flows into an integrated bracelet, while a natural lapis lazuli dial brings an irregular, organic contrast. It is the debut watch from designers Phil Toledano and Alfred Chan, and its central appeal is visual rather than mechanical.
What makes the B/1 look different?
An asymmetric case with a left-side crown
The B/1 rejects the familiar symmetry of a round watch. Its sharply defined case has an unusual outline, and the crown sits on the left. Alfred Chan summarized the design in Hodinkee’s launch coverage: “Everything is straight except for the crown.” The offset crown is part of the composition, not an attempt to hide a conventional form.

Case and bracelet read as one shape
The integrated bracelet continues the case’s angular geometry, making the watch feel like a single sculpted object rather than a round case attached to a separate strap or bracelet. Launch coverage describes alternating brushed and matte-blasted surfaces on the steel, which catch light differently across the hard edges. Fratello identifies the case and bracelet as 904L stainless steel; Hodinkee describes the case simply as stainless steel.
Lapis disrupts the geometry
The natural lapis lazuli dial is the counterpoint to all those straight lines. Its blue surface has individual variation rather than the uniformity of a printed or machined pattern. Toledano called it a “galaxy dial,” while acknowledging to Hodinkee that the phrase was “totally cheesy”; he was interested in the stone’s imperfections. The contrast is the point: precise metal geometry around a dial that looks organic and unpredictable.

Where did the design come from?
Toledano and Chan began talking through Instagram and found common ground in Brutalist architecture and integrated-bracelet watches, according to their interview with Time+Tide. Toledano said the case drew on a window of the Marcel Breuer-designed Breuer Building in New York. The designers wanted to translate that shape into a watch and carry the idea through the design. This is their stated inspiration, not evidence that the case exactly reproduces the building’s window.
Hodinkee framed the B/1 as a 1970s-inspired, Brutalist-influenced dress/sport hybrid. Those references help explain its visual territory, but do not imply a technical connection to any other watch. Toledano described the project to Time+Tide as “a sculpture story, a materials story”: the movement was not the creative focus.

How did the B/1 launch, and what is known about later versions?
Hodinkee, Fratello and Time+Tide reported a US$4,000 launch price in 2024. Time+Tide said availability began May 16, 2024, and Fratello and Time+Tide reported a 175-piece release. These are historical launch details, not confirmation of current price, stock or sales channels.
The design family continued after the original lapis-dial model. Hodinkee’s January 2025 report on the B/1.2 describes a Tahitian mother-of-pearl dial and gives a launch price of US$5,700. GQ’s January 2026 article describes the B/1.3r with a titanium case and an 18k gold dial. Those changes distinguish later models from the original B/1; the cited coverage does not establish their current availability or a complete, directly comparable set of specifications.

Who is the original B/1 for?
The B/1 makes most sense for someone drawn to an unconventional case and bracelet, visible surface finishing and a natural-stone dial. Its appeal is that these elements make the watch read as a compact piece of industrial design. It is less compelling if the priority is movement novelty: the creators themselves described the project as centered on sculpture and materials, and the caliber details in launch reports do not even agree.
