A depth marking is not a guarantee that a watch remains water-resistant as it ages, and choosing a watch does not replace dive training or safe procedures.
What makes a watch a dive watch?
“Water-resistant” and “designed for diving” are not interchangeable descriptions. ISO 22810:2010 covers requirements and test methods for verifying water resistance in watches generally; ISO says the edition remains current after review and confirmation in 2021. ISO 6425:2018 is the specific standard for diver’s watches. Its scope covers watches designed for diving to at least 100 m and equipped with a secured system to indicate diving time that is visible in darkness. ISO identifies the 2018 edition as current, confirmed in 2024.

That scope does not establish that every watch carrying a depth marking complies with ISO 6425, nor does it give a complete account of the standard’s tests. Check the manufacturer’s exact description and the manual for the model you are considering.

How to interpret the water-resistance marking
Start with the precise marking on the case back and the manufacturer’s guidance for intended use. Seiko’s water-resistance chart, for example, separates swimming and shallow diving from scuba diving, and lists “Diver’s Watch 200 meters” and “Professional Diver’s Watch 1,000 meters.” Those are Seiko’s categories, not universal thresholds or a substitute for checking another brand’s specifications.
#1 Best Overall
- Stainless Steel case with Black Resin Band
- Black Dial with date window at 3 O'clock
- Luminous markers and hour hands; sweep second hand
- Anti-reverse bezel
- Water-resistant to 200 M (660 feet)
A stated depth is not a promise that an older or damaged watch will still resist water. Seiko cautions that “A watch’s water resistance is not permanently guaranteed,” noting that gaskets can age and parts can deform after accidental shock. If the watch’s condition, impact history, or maintenance is uncertain, arrange a water-resistance check with an appropriate watch service provider rather than relying on the marking alone. The cited guidance does not establish a universal service interval.
What to look for in the bezel
The bezel is a quick elapsed-time reference. ISO 6425’s scope calls for a secured diving-time measuring system visible in darkness, while Seiko’s manual for a 200 m diver’s watch includes checking that its rotating bezel turns smoothly among pre-dive checks. Follow the instructions for the specific model; bezel operation and any locking features can vary.

- The waterproof level of this watch has reached 10 ATM waterproof, which can work normally at a depth of 100 meters (330ft) underwater. It is not only suitable for wearing in water activities such as swimming, diving, snorkeling, surfing, rowing, water skiing, but also suitable for wearing in daily life and outdoor sports, such as jogging, hiking, climbing, cycling, etc.
- The built-in stopwatch and timer function of the watch can meet the precise timing needs of exercise and sports competitions.
- The dual time zone display function will make your trips more convenient; 12/24 hour format display can meet the time reading habits of different people.
- Support multiple useful functions, such as: alarm clock, hourly chime, calendar and back light.
- The watch battery is replaceable. If you find that the watch is not working or the text on the display is not clear, please replace the watch battery in time.
- Readability: Check that the scale and markers are easy for you to distinguish at a glance.
- Handling: See whether you can grip and operate it as intended, following the model’s manual.
- Condition: Look for smooth, reliable operation and any damage that could make the timing reference difficult to use.
Use the bezel only as a timing aid within your established dive plan and training; it is not a dive-planning substitute or an independent safety instrument.

ISO 6425’s stated scope requires the diving-time indication to be visible in darkness. When comparing watches, check whether the hour and minute hands and timing markers remain legible in low light to your eyes. The name or color of a luminous material alone does not tell you how readable a particular watch will be.

- 330 ft. (100 M) water resistance. In general, suitable for recreational surfing, swimming, snorkeling, sailing and water sports.
- 12/24-hour timekeeping, 43 mm resin case with mineral dial window, Japanese quartz movement; Analog: 3 hands (hour, minute, second)
- Case / bezel material: Resin; Rotating bezel
- Day and date display at 3 o’clock
- Analog display, molded resin band with buckle closure; Accuracy: ±20 seconds per month
Consult the exact model’s manual for any charging instructions or claimed glow duration. One Seiko manual gives model-specific LumiBrite guidance: exposure to fluorescent light of 500 lux or higher for at least 10 minutes can enable sufficient emission for 3 to 5 hours. That example is not a general guarantee for every LumiBrite watch, other luminous materials, or all conditions.

- Match the intended activity. Confirm that the manufacturer identifies the model as suitable for your intended use, and read its manual.
- Verify the marking and condition. Check the case-back designation, the manufacturer’s water-resistance guidance, and the watch’s service and impact history.
- Assess the timing display. Make sure the bezel is legible and operates as intended, and that the hands and markers are readable in darkness.
- Check the fit. Consider case size, comfort, and whether the strap or bracelet suits your preferences and intended use.
- Resolve uncertainty before use. If the watch’s water resistance is in doubt, seek a suitable service check rather than treating its original rating as proof of its present condition.
Watch choice does not establish diver competence or make a dive safe. Seiko’s manual warns users to have proper training, experience, and skill, and to follow diving rules.
