At the start of a timed activity, turn the bezel’s zero marker or triangle to the minute hand. As time passes, read elapsed minutes where the minute hand points on the bezel scale. The bezel is a timing aid—not proof that a watch is safe to dive—so follow the instructions for your specific model.
How to use the bezel to track elapsed time
- Set the marker: At the moment timing begins, rotate the bezel until its zero marker or triangle lines up with the minute hand.
- Read elapsed minutes: As the minute hand advances, note the number it points to on the bezel scale. That number indicates the elapsed minutes since you set the marker.
TUDOR describes this use in its official rotating-bezel tutorial, and Grand Seiko provides the same basic instructions in its guide to using a rotating bezel. Grand Seiko cautions that elapsed time shown by the bezel should be treated only as a guide during diving.

Why many dive-watch bezels turn one way
A unidirectional dive bezel turns counter-clockwise. If it is moved accidentally during a dive, it can make elapsed time appear longer, but not shorter. That design helps prevent a misleadingly short elapsed-time reading. TUDOR and Grand Seiko both explain this safety rationale in their bezel instructions (TUDOR; Grand Seiko).
What to check before diving
Use the manual for your exact watch: inspection points and operating instructions can vary by model. Seiko advises checking that the bezel turns smoothly and is neither too loose nor too tight. Grand Seiko also includes smooth bezel operation among its pre-dive checks and directs owners to contact a retailer or service network if they find an abnormality (Seiko guidance; Grand Seiko guidance).

Check the watch’s other stated conditions too, including its water-resistance range and any instructions for the crown and band. Seiko says the watch must be used within the water-resistance range marked on it (Seiko’s diving guidance). A bezel that turns normally does not certify the rest of the watch as suitable for a dive.
How to clean the watch after seawater exposure
Rinse and dry according to the watch manual
After diving, rinse seawater and dirt away with fresh water, then dry the watch thoroughly, following the method specified for your model. Seiko recommends fresh-water rinsing and thorough drying. Grand Seiko gives similar advice, but its cited manual says not to pour running faucet water directly onto the covered watch; it instructs owners to soak it in a container of water instead. Do not assume that one model’s rinsing method applies to another (Seiko; Grand Seiko).

Clean compatible bands gently
Casio recommends fresh-water rinsing after exposure to seawater or mud. For certain metal or resin bands with metal parts, its guidance allows cleaning with a soft toothbrush or similar tool and mild detergent, followed by rinsing and drying. This recommendation concerns those bands; it is not an instruction to brush inside the bezel, apply detergent to every watch, or take the bezel apart. When a bezel needs professional attention
Stop relying on the bezel for timing if it is abnormally loose or stiff, damaged, or otherwise fails to operate as expected. Follow the maker’s service instructions rather than trying an unverified repair. Seiko directs owners to its customer service center for malfunctions; Grand Seiko advises contacting the retailer or its service network when an abnormality is found (Seiko service guidance; Grand Seiko guidance).
