Choose a first watch by checking how it fits your wrist, what you will use it for, and what upkeep you are willing to handle. Measure the wrist where the watch will sit, compare the case’s diameter, lug-to-lug length and thickness, then check the exact model’s movement, water-use instructions, readability and ownership needs.
Measure your wrist, then assess the fit
Use a soft measuring tape or a strip of paper around the spot where you want to wear the watch. Keep it snug without compressing your wrist, then note the circumference. Measuring landmarks vary: one approach is the narrowest point of the wrist; another is just behind the wrist bone. The practical goal is to measure where the watch will actually sit, rather than rely on a number taken at an unrelated point.

Wrist circumference is only a starting point. Wrist width and shape, case geometry, strap or bracelet adjustment and personal preference all affect how a watch looks and feels.

Compare more than case diameter
- Case diameter: The width of the case across the dial. It is useful for comparing watches, but cannot tell you by itself whether one will fit.
- Lug-to-lug length: The span from one end of the lugs to the other. Check that the case does not extend uncomfortably past the edges of your wrist.
- Thickness: A thicker case may feel more prominent and can catch under a shirt cuff. Consider how it sits when your wrist bends.
- Strap or bracelet: Check its length and adjustment range, as well as the lug width if you might replace the strap. Do not assume straps are interchangeable or that watches share a standard lug width.
Longines publishes these illustrative case-diameter suggestions by wrist circumference: below 6.3 inches (about 16 cm), 32–36 mm; 6.3–7 inches (about 16–17.8 cm), 36–42 mm; and above 7 inches (about 17.8 cm), 42–46 mm. These are brand guidelines, not universal fit rules. Other published brand guidance suggests 38–42 mm for many wrists or first-time buyers, but those ranges are also recommendations—not population statistics. Try it on if you can
Move your wrist naturally and notice whether the watch stays secure, slides or turns, presses against the wrist bone, or catches under a cuff. A comfortable fit should work during ordinary movement, not just while your arm is still. If you are buying remotely, compare the listed case dimensions with a watch you already find comfortable, while accounting for differences in lug shape and thickness.
Match the watch to your routine
Start with where and how you expect to wear it. An office or formal watch may need to sit neatly under a cuff; a daily watch may benefit from clear markers and a comfortable strap; outdoor use can make durability, legibility and the specific water instructions more important. A date or chronograph is worthwhile when you will use it, not simply because it adds functions.

Read water-resistance guidance for the exact model
Water resistance is not a promise that a watch is safe at the depth printed on its case. Seiko’s guidance distinguishes everyday splashes from swimming and diving: its table lists 3 BAR for splashes and rain but not swimming, and 5 BAR for swimming, yachting and showers. These are manufacturer categories, not universal permission for every watch bearing the same number; check the instructions for the specific model and activity. Seiko’s water-resistance FAQ and Seiko’s instruction guidance explain that bar is a test pressure, not a direct equivalent to a safe real-world diving depth.
Seals can age, and impacts can affect water resistance. An older watch should not be treated as permanently sealed; follow its care instructions and have its condition checked if you intend to expose it to water.

Check readability, materials and total ownership
A watch can have the right dimensions and still be a poor match if it is hard to read or uncomfortable. Look at the contrast between the hands, markers and dial, and consider low-light visibility if you need it. Think about case and crystal materials, strap or bracelet feel, weight and skin-contact preferences.

Use a short comparison before you buy
When you have narrowed the field, compare the specific models side by side. Record manufacturer-listed dimensions and water guidance rather than filling gaps with assumptions.
