Choose a fitness tracker that works with your phone, supports the workouts you do, feels comfortable enough to wear through the day (and, if you want, overnight), and has a battery life that fits your routine. Decide whether you need GPS without your phone and whether you want smartwatch features or a simpler band. Compare those needs against the exact model’s specifications rather than choosing by the longest feature list.
Start with the kind of device you want to wear
A simple band can cover core activity tracking, while a watch-style device may add a larger display, apps, and convenience features. Screenless trackers are another option if you would rather avoid a display. Consumer NZ frames the choice as: “Do you want a simple band that counts steps, or a tiny smartphone for your wrist?”

Think about what you will actually use: checking workout summaries on your wrist, seeing notifications, or recording activity without interacting with a screen. Also consider size, shape, and whether the device is comfortable during both movement and sleep. A feature is only useful if the device suits your habits well enough that you keep wearing it.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsCheck workout support and the history you need
Look up the exact model’s supported activities and how it records them. If you want to track a particular workout, confirm that it is supported rather than assuming every device offers the same exercise modes or summaries. Consider whether you will use workout history, heart-rate records, route information, or simple activity totals.

Features can differ even within a product family. Samsung’s support documentation, for example, describes exercise, heart-rate, and sleep tracking on Galaxy Fit devices, and GPS route tracking on supported Galaxy Watch5 and Watch5 Pro devices. Samsung also says those supported Watch5 models can manually track more than 90 exercises; that claim does not apply to every tracker in the brand’s range. Check the Samsung Health tracker support page for the device you are considering.
The available evidence does not establish a controlled, head-to-head ranking of workout heart-rate accuracy across current models. Treat readings as tracker measurements, not as a reason to choose a device on an unsupported accuracy claim.
Decide whether you need GPS without your phone
GPS options affect how a tracker records outdoor routes:
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →- Built-in GPS: The tracker can record a route without relying on a connected phone.
- Connected GPS: The tracker uses a compatible phone’s GPS. Check whether you need to carry that phone during the activity.
- No GPS: The device may still track other activity, but do not assume it will record a GPS route.
Confirm the GPS type for the exact model and activity you plan to track. If you run or cycle without your phone, built-in GPS may matter more than a feature such as a larger display. If you usually carry your phone, connected GPS may be sufficient.
Verify phone and app compatibility before buying
Check that the tracker works with your phone’s operating system and the companion app you intend to use. Compatibility and available features can vary by model, so a brand name alone is not enough to confirm that a device will work as you expect. Samsung’s documentation is one example of features being tied to particular devices and support conditions.

Compare battery life for your real routine
Battery estimates are not directly comparable unless the usage conditions are similar. GPS and other active features can shorten battery life substantially, so check the manufacturer’s estimate for a mode close to how you will use the tracker. A headline maximum may not describe a routine that includes frequent GPS workouts or other power-intensive features.

Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Match comfort and water resistance to how you will wear it
Consider whether a band, watch-style device, or screenless tracker will feel right during workouts and ordinary activities. If you want sleep tracking, think about whether you will comfortably wear the device overnight. Display size and shape can affect day-to-day comfort as much as they affect how easy the screen is to read.
Check the exact model’s water-resistance information against the activities you have in mind. Do not treat “water-resistant” as a blanket promise that every device is suitable for every kind of water exposure; confirm the manufacturer’s stated limits for the model.

Set expectations for sleep tracking
Sleep tracking can help you review patterns, but it is an estimate rather than a medical assessment. Consumer NZ cautions that the technology is still developing and says not to expect medical-grade accuracy. If you are comparing devices, focus on whether the sleep information is useful to you, not on an assumption that a tracker can diagnose a sleep problem.

Use a practical checklist to compare models
Put the exact model names side by side and answer these questions before you buy:
- Does it support the workouts you actually do, with a history or summary you will use?
- Does it have built-in GPS, connected GPS, or no GPS—and does that suit whether you carry your phone?
- Is it compatible with your phone and the companion app you want to use?
- Will its size, shape, and display suit all-day wear and, if relevant, sleep?
- Does its battery estimate reflect your likely GPS and feature use?
- Is its stated water resistance suitable for your intended activity?
- Do you want smartwatch functions, or would a simpler tracker be enough?
Check current model details before purchasing: specifications, availability, and software support can change. Subscription features and costs also vary, so confirm the current terms for the specific device and app if those features matter to you.
How broad is the current comparison landscape?
Consumer NZ’s guide, updated in June 2026, describes testing 87 current and 94 discontinued models. That count reflects the scope of its guide, not a guarantee that every model remains available where you live. Its smartwatch and fitness tracker buying guide discusses tracking, smart functions, waterproofness, and battery life. Use comparisons as a starting point, then verify the details for the version sold in your region.
