Choose a GPS running watch by checking fit first, then matching its running features and battery life to how you train. Case dimensions, thickness, weight, strap adjustment and stated wrist range help screen candidates, but they cannot guarantee comfort. For training, compare the GPS modes and the battery estimate for the mode you will actually use—not just the largest number on the product page.
Start with fit, not the size label
Compare a watch’s case width or diameter, thickness and weight with your wrist circumference. Check the manufacturer’s stated wrist range and make sure the strap can be tightened securely without pinching. These measurements can rule out an obviously unsuitable option, but they cannot predict how a case will sit around your wrist bone or whether you will like wearing it for hours or overnight.

Garmin’s Forerunner 265S is one documented compact example: Garmin lists dimensions of 41.7 × 41.7 × 12.9 mm, a weight of 39 g, and fit for wrists measuring 115–178 mm in circumference. It uses 18 mm industry-standard quick-release bands. Those specifications describe this model; they do not establish how it will look or feel on every wrist. Garmin’s Forerunner 265S specifications provide the listed dimensions and fit range.
If fit is uncertain, try the watch on. Check that the case does not press uncomfortably against the wrist bone, the strap stays secure as you move, and the watch remains comfortable in the position you expect to wear it during runs and sleep.

Match running features to your training
Prioritize the functions you will use rather than treating a longer feature list as proof of a better watch. For everyday run tracking, check for GPS distance, pace and the activity profiles relevant to you. If you follow structured sessions or use additional training metrics, confirm that the specific guidance and measurements you want are included.
Garmin lists the Forerunner 265S with GPS-based distance, time and pace; road, track, treadmill, trail and ultra-running profiles; running dynamics and running power; grade-adjusted pace; and PacePro course or distance guidance. Garmin also lists training and recovery insights. These are feature listings, not independent evidence of measurement accuracy or a ranking against other watches. The model supports GPS, GLONASS, Galileo, QZSS and BeiDou, along with multi-frequency positioning and SatIQ. Garmin’s product page lists the positioning systems and running features.

Compare battery life in the GPS mode you will use
Battery estimates can change substantially with positioning mode and music playback. Garmin gives the following “up to” estimates for the Forerunner 265S and says actual battery life varies with use and selected performance mode. These are manufacturer estimates, not independent measurements.

| Mode | Garmin estimate |
|---|---|
| Smartwatch mode | Up to 15 days |
| GPS-only GNSS | Up to 24 hours |
| SatIQ | Up to 18 hours |
| All-systems multi-band | Up to 15 hours |
| GPS-only GNSS with music | Up to 7.5 hours |
| SatIQ with music | Up to 7 hours |
| All-systems multi-band with music | Up to 6 hours |
When comparing watches, use the estimate for your likely GPS mode and whether you expect to play music from the watch. A headline maximum in GPS-only mode may not represent a long run with multi-band positioning and music enabled. The Garmin specifications list these mode-specific estimates.

Understand what training measurements require
Performance measurements are estimates, and some need activity history before they become useful. Garmin says its performance measurements may seem inaccurate at first while the watch learns from several activities. Its Forerunner 265 series manual says HRV status is based on wrist heart-rate readings during sleep and requires three weeks of consistent sleep data to display a status.
The manual also states that lactate-threshold measurement requires a compatible chest heart-rate monitor. Treat that as a requirement for this particular measurement, not a general requirement for GPS run tracking. Check the Forerunner 265 series owner’s manual for Garmin’s guidance on estimates and sensor requirements.

Wear the watch correctly for wrist heart rate
Garmin advises wearing the watch above the wrist bone, snug but comfortable, and waiting for the heart-rate icon to become solid before starting an activity. For erratic readings, its manual recommends cleaning and drying the arm, avoiding lotion or sunscreen beneath the watch, and warming up before running. A comfortable, secure fit matters both for wear and for getting wrist-based heart-rate readings.
Check daily-wear trade-offs too
A running watch may also be your everyday watch, so consider screen preference, weight, strap comfort, overnight wear and charging. Garmin lists an AMOLED display with an optional always-on mode and a proprietary plug charger for the 265S. These are practical trade-offs to compare against your own habits, rather than indicators that one display or charging approach suits every runner. See Garmin’s product specifications for the listed display and charging details.

Use a consistent checklist to compare watches
- Fit: Compare case dimensions, thickness, weight, wrist range and strap adjustment; try the watch on if comfort is uncertain.
- Run tracking: Confirm GPS pace and distance, relevant activity profiles and the positioning modes offered.
- Battery: Find the estimate for your GPS mode, with music on or off as applicable.
- Training: Identify which guidance and metrics you will actually use, and check whether they require activity history or an external sensor.
- Daily use: Consider screen behavior, overnight comfort and charging alongside running needs.
The available official specifications and manual document the 265S’s features and fit figures, but do not establish comparative GPS or heart-rate accuracy across brands or prove it is the best choice for every small wrist. Compare alternatives using the same fit, feature and mode-specific battery criteria.
