Choose an automatic movement by checking that it fits your case, dial, hands and crown position, then compare the functions, maker-stated specifications, sourcing and service options. No evidence here establishes a universal reliability winner among the NH35, Miyota 8215 and Miyota 9015; a stated accuracy range is not a real-world reliability test.
Which automatic movement should you use for a watch build?
Start with the exact parts in your build, not a reputation ranking. A movement that is too tall, has the wrong stem height, or puts its date in the wrong place is unsuitable regardless of its specifications. Once fit is confirmed, select the functions and compare the maker’s stated height, beat rate, power reserve and accuracy range.

The Miyota 8215 and 9015 are manufacturer-documented options with date, hand winding, quick date setting and stop seconds. The 9015 is thinner and has a higher beat rate; the 8215 runs at a lower beat rate. Miyota’s catalog also lists the 9039 as a no-date alternative. An NH35A may be considered for an accessible build, but the specification evidence cited here comes from a third-party-hosted document, so confirm details and authenticity with the seller.

Compare the movement’s technical drawing with the drawings and specifications for the case, dial, hands and any spacer or holder. Do not assume that movements sharing a nominal size use interchangeable parts.

Compare the movements on specifications that affect the build
The following figures are maker-stated specifications, not results from a controlled comparison of reliability or timekeeping in completed watches. Miyota’s catalog gives the 8215 a beat rate of 21,600 vibrations per hour and approximately 42 hours of duration; it gives the 9015 and 9039 28,800 vibrations per hour and approximately 42 hours. A higher beat rate means the seconds hand steps more frequently. It does not, by itself, establish greater reliability.

How to interpret accuracy and reliability claims
A published accuracy range is the maker’s stated specification for a caliber. It is not a prediction of the rate of an individual assembled watch, a comparative test, or proof of long-term reliability. The ranges above come from different caliber listings and should not be treated as equivalent test results. Jewel count alone also does not establish which movement is the better choice.
No controlled study, manufacturer failure-rate table or independently verified service-life comparison for these candidate calibers is established by the cited sources. It is therefore not possible to name one as the most reliable on this evidence. Seiko’s guidance notes that mechanical-watch accuracy can be affected by temperature, magnetism, shock, winding state and the watch’s resting position. Its FAQ states, “The accuracy of the watch is affected by its position when it is not worn on the wrist,” and “Strong shock may affect accuracy.” Seiko mechanical-watch FAQ
Choose functions and case design together
For a date watch
The 8215 and 9015 listings specify a date display, quick date setting, hand winding and stop seconds. Check the date-window position against the exact dial and movement drawing before choosing either. Their listed heights differ: 5.67 mm for the 8215 and 3.90 mm for the 9015.

- Product material is strong, durable, long service life.
- Can be used as a spare parts to facilitate the replacement of your movement.
- Single calendar movement, high accuracy.
- This movement is 21,600 bph Standard specification for NH35 movement.
- Easy to replace and install, fit to your watch perfectly
For a thinner date build
The 9015’s listed 3.90 mm height is lower than the 8215’s 5.67 mm. That can make it a more suitable candidate when movement height constrains the design, but it does not resolve stem, hand, dial or caseback compatibility. Confirm all clearances for the exact parts.

Miyota’s catalog lists the 9039 as no-date, with a 3.90 mm height, 28,800 vibrations per hour and approximately 42 hours of duration. Confirm its full technical drawing and fit with the case, dial and hands before purchase.
For a higher-tier example
Seiko describes the 8L35 as an automatic and manual-winding caliber with approximately 50 hours of reserve, 26 jewels and a stated accuracy range of +15 to -10 seconds per day. Seiko also identifies caliber-specific Diashock protection and materials and features. It is a higher-tier example, not a like-for-like budget comparison with the other candidates; those listed specifications alone do not establish a reliability ranking. Plan for sourcing and service
Reliability in a build depends on more than the caliber name. Before ordering, check that the supplier is credible, ask how the movement’s identity and condition are verified, and confirm whether compatible parts can be obtained. Find out whether a local watchmaker will service that caliber and whether the likely service cost makes sense for your build. The cited specifications do not establish current stock, seller authenticity, warranty terms, repair economics or a verified service network.
Assess timekeeping under repeatable conditions
Temperature, magnetism, shock, winding state and resting position can influence a mechanical watch’s rate. Keep the watch away from strong magnetic sources and impacts, and compare its timekeeping under consistent conditions rather than treating one observation as a definitive measure of the caliber. Seiko’s guidance on these influences is in its mechanical-watch FAQ.
