What does hacking seconds mean?
Hacking seconds—also called stop-seconds—means the seconds hand stops when the crown is pulled to the time-setting position. In the caliber Orient describes, a hacking lever stops the balance wheel and gear train when the crown is pulled out. Not every automatic movement necessarily behaves this way; some continue running while the time is being set. Orient Watch USA explains the function and this movement-specific distinction.

The practical benefit is that you can pause the seconds display while setting the time against a reference clock. Hacking gives you a way to synchronize the display; it does not, by itself, establish that the movement keeps better time.
What does hand-winding mean?
Hand-winding means manually winding the mainspring by turning the crown. ISO 6426-2:2026 defines it as “manual winding of the mainspring by the user using a crown or key,” in entry 6.1.6. ISO 6426-2:2026

On a watch that supports it, turning the crown winds the same spring that stores energy to run the movement. This can add wind or help start a stopped watch. Seiko’s instructions for watches using calibers 8R46/8R48, for example, direct the user to turn the crown clockwise slowly. The instructions state that a fully wound watch operates for about 45 hours; that figure applies to the specified watch, not to automatic watches as a category. Seiko 8R46/8R48 instructions
How automatic winding works
An automatic mechanical movement uses a rotor that moves with the wearer’s wrist motion to wind the mainspring. Hamilton describes this energy transfer and notes that a watch can stop if it is not worn long enough to use its power reserve. Some automatic watches also let you wind the mainspring by hand. Automatic winding and hand-winding are different ways of supplying energy; neither describes whether the seconds hand stops during time setting.
How to check a specific watch
Do not infer either feature from an “automatic” label. Check the official specification for the exact watch or its movement, then consult the manual if the listing is unclear.

- Look for hacking. Check whether the specification or manual says the seconds hand stops when the crown is pulled to the time-setting position.
- Look for manual winding. Check whether the crown winds the mainspring. “Hand-winding” or “manual winding” indicates this function.
- Check power reserve separately. Use the stated figure for that watch or movement; reserve is not established by either hacking or hand-winding.
When comparing two automatic watches, assess those three specifications independently. The manufacturer sources cited here explain the functions but do not establish a comprehensive list of current movements or verify a particular watch with both features, so confirm the exact model before relying on a listing.
