A certified-pre-owned program can add brand- or platform-specific safeguards, but it is not a universal standard. Treat a lost-or-stolen database search as one part of your checks, not proof of authenticity or clear ownership.
Start by checking who is responsible for the sale
Identify the seller
Ask for the business’s full legal name, physical address, and contact details. The invoice should identify both the seller and the specific watch. The Watch Register advises buyers to obtain seller details and flags anonymity or false information as a warning sign: The Watch Register’s buying guidance.

Clarify ownership and provenance
Ask whether the dealer owns the watch, is selling it on consignment, or is acting for someone else. If it is a consignment, establish who owns it and which party is responsible for completing the sale. Request the known ownership history and keep a record of the answer. Box and papers may support a listing, but they do not replace independent checks; The Watch Register recommends checking every luxury pre-owned watch, including examples sold with box and papers.

There is no reason to assume that every seller uses the word “certified” to describe the same examination. Ask who performs the checks, what they inspect, and whether you will receive written findings.

- Movement and components: Is the movement examined, and are components checked for authenticity?
- Serials and records: Are the serial number and papers compared? Is the watch’s configuration consistent with its records?
- Modifications: Are replacement parts or other modifications identified and documented?
- Function: What functional, timekeeping, or water-resistance tests were performed, if appropriate?
- Documentation: Will the dealer provide an inspection report or other written record tied to the exact watch?
Published processes illustrate why specifics matter. Rolex says its Certified Pre-Owned watches return to its workshops for detailed verification; its newsroom describes disassembly to verify components and configuration. Chrono24 describes visual checks of the case, dial, hands, and movement, comparisons of serials and modifications, function, timekeeping, and water-resistance tests, plus a lost-or-stolen check. These are descriptions of particular programs, not evidence that an unaffiliated dealer’s “certified” label carries the same scope. Get condition and service details for the exact watch
Ask for clear photographs of the actual watch and a written condition description—not only stock images or general descriptions of the model. Find out what has been serviced or replaced, when the work took place, what parts remain original, and which functional tests were completed. Where relevant, ask whether timekeeping and water resistance were tested and what the results mean for this watch.
Program descriptions can help you see what a more detailed process may include. Bucherer says its Certified Pre-Owned process includes movement authentication and servicing, diagnostic tests, time regulation, power-reserve testing, and water-resistance testing. Rolex notes that some older Certified Pre-Owned models are exceptions to current waterproofness and original-precision expectations. Read the warranty, returns, and payment terms before ordering
Warranty
Get the warranty in writing and identify who provides it, when coverage begins, how long it lasts, which parts and labor are covered, what is excluded, where service is performed, and what remedy is available. Two years is an example, not an industry-wide standard: Rolex and Bucherer each describe two-year international coverage for their respective Certified Pre-Owned programs.
Returns and payment
Record the return deadline, eligibility conditions, who pays for shipping and insurance, and how a refund is issued. Confirm how payment is handled while you inspect the watch and what process applies if the item does not match its description. Chrono24’s published buyer-protection terms distinguish professional and private sellers, including different escrow periods and withdrawal provisions. Those rules apply to its platform; do not assume they apply to another dealer or marketplace. Your country’s laws may also affect your rights. Check lost-or-stolen status and keep a record
The Watch Register recommends checking every luxury pre-owned watch and requesting a certificate in the buyer’s name. Its guidance also says the database is not exhaustive and a search reflects the status when submitted. A clear result is therefore not a guarantee that a watch is authentic or has clear title, and its status may change later. How certified-pre-owned examples differ
These examples show how named programs describe their own services. They are not endorsements of every retailer, seller, or watch offered under a broad “certified” label.
Rolex Certified Pre-Owned
Rolex says the program covers pre-owned Rolex watches at least two years old and sold through participating Official Rolex Retailers. Its stated process includes workshop authentication and full servicing, testing, a brand-issued seal and guarantee card, and a two-year international guarantee. Rolex also says some older watches are exceptions to current waterproofness and original-precision expectations, so confirm the particular watch’s condition and applicable terms. Chrono24 Certified
Chrono24 describes certification by a verified watchmaker working with the dealer or at a Chrono24 center. Its stated process includes a documented inspection and a Watch Register check. Certification is available only in certain countries, and platform buyer-protection terms vary between professional and private sellers. Confirm the current availability, listing, and terms that apply to your purchase at Chrono24 Certified and Chrono24’s terms and conditions.
Bucherer Certified Pre-Owned
Bucherer describes expert inspection and service that includes movement authentication, diagnostic checks, power-reserve and water-resistance tests, and a two-year international guarantee.
