Neither is automatically the better buy. A new watch may suit you if you value first ownership, an applicable manufacturer warranty, and buying through an authorized retailer. A pre-owned watch may offer access to discontinued or immediately available references, and sometimes a lower asking price, but its value depends on the exact watch, condition, provenance, service history, seller protections, and price. Compare the same reference and weigh the total cost and assurances—not just the sticker price.
What matters most in the choice
“New” and “pre-owned” describe condition and sales history, not a universal level of quality or value. A well-documented pre-owned watch can be a stronger fit than a new one that does not meet your needs; a low-priced listing can also become a poor buy if it needs service or has weak seller protections.

Compare the same reference through credible channels. Include taxes, shipping, seller fees, any near-term service estimate, warranty terms, condition, and the protections available if the watch is not as described. Availability matters too: a discontinued or scarce reference may only be available pre-owned, while a buyer who wants a particular current model may prefer an authorized retailer.

| Factor | New from an authorized retailer | Pre-owned |
|---|---|---|
| Ownership history | First owner; the watch is sold as new through the applicable authorized channel. | Previously owned; condition and history vary by individual watch. |
| Warranty | May include the manufacturer’s warranty under its terms. Confirm the warranty card, start date, duration, exclusions, and service requirements. | May have remaining manufacturer coverage, a seller warranty, brand-backed certification coverage, or none. Confirm the issuer and written terms. |
| Authentication and documentation | Authorized-channel purchase provides the retailer’s applicable assurances. | Depends on the seller and channel. Verify provenance and documentation; certification scope varies. |
| Condition and originality | Sold new, subject to the retailer’s description and applicable terms. | Assess wear, polishing, replacement parts, component originality, water resistance, and service history. |
| Availability | Depends on current production and authorized-retailer inventory. | Can provide access to discontinued references or watches available sooner. |
| Total cost | Use the actual purchase price plus taxes and other charges. | Compare the asking price with condition, protections, and any likely service needs; no universal saving is established. |
How warranties differ by brand and channel
Warranty duration is not a general rule for all luxury watches. For example, Rolex says new watches bought from Official Rolex Retailers carry a five-year guarantee, while its Certified Pre-Owned watches carry a new two-year international guarantee from purchase. OMEGA states that all new OMEGA watches carry a five-year international warranty. These are brand-specific examples, not terms to assume for another brand, an independent seller, or every pre-owned watch. Rolex Certified Pre-Owned; Rolex FAQ; OMEGA FAQ.

Before paying, check the actual warranty document. Confirm who provides coverage, when it begins, how long it lasts, whether it transfers, what it excludes, and whether repairs must go through a particular service network. Do not assume a private or independent-seller purchase inherits a manufacturer warranty.
What Rolex Certified Pre-Owned includes
Rolex says its Certified Pre-Owned program applies to second-hand Rolex watches at least two years old and offered by participating Official Rolex Retailers. The brand says it authenticates each watch, fully services it, and provides a two-year international guarantee beginning at purchase. The watch comes with a distinctive seal and guarantee card. Rolex also says it checks the original configuration and performs checks used in its after-sales service. Some of the oldest models are exceptions to the program’s performance standard for waterproofness and original precision. Program details; Certification process.

That coverage may be worth paying for if brand-backed authentication, service, and a fresh guarantee are priorities. It does not establish that every certified listing is well-priced: compare the same reference, condition, documentation, warranty, and seller protections across available options.

What pre-owned prices and resale figures can—and cannot—tell you
There is no dependable universal percentage by which all luxury watches depreciate after purchase. Pre-owned value varies by reference, functional and aesthetic condition, and supply and demand. OMEGA describes those factors in its FAQ. OMEGA FAQ.
One historical data point needs careful context: WatchCharts reported in a May 1, 2021 analysis that a watch bought from a secondary-market dealer cost 13% more on average than one bought from a private seller. That comparison was between seller types in that analysis; it was not a measure of new-watch depreciation, is not a current market average, and does not predict the price of a particular reference. WatchCharts also cautioned that, with exceptions, buyers should not expect to resell most watches near retail price. WatchCharts’ 2021 analysis.

Use recent evidence for the exact reference and condition if you can find it, and treat future resale as uncertain. Current model-level prices and repair costs depend on the watch, its location, condition, and the service provider; a seller’s price alone cannot answer whether a watch is a good value.

How to vet a pre-owned listing
- Check the seller and the protections. Verify the seller’s identity, written return policy, payment protections, and the warranty offered. For Rolex, the brand recommends buying new or second-hand through Official Rolex Retailers; its CPO guarantees are tied to its official program. Rolex buying guidance.
- Confirm the exact watch. Match the reference and serial information to the listing and available documentation. Share sensitive serial details only through safe channels, and ask what documentation supports the watch’s provenance.
- Ask about condition and originality. Request clear information about wear, polishing, replaced parts, component originality, and water resistance. Ask for documentation behind any condition claims.
- Review service history and likely costs. Ask when the watch was last serviced, by whom, what work was performed, and whether records are available. If service may be due, seek an estimate before treating the asking price as the total cost.
- Use an inspection when practical. Consider an authorized or suitably qualified independent inspection, especially when the seller cannot provide a meaningful return period or verifiable records. No single authentication procedure applies to every brand and marketplace.
- Compare the complete offer. Put price, taxes, shipping, return terms, warranty, condition, documentation, and service needs side by side against the same reference from other credible sellers.
Authentication or inspection claims should be evaluated by their provider and terms. A June 2026 Marie Claire article reported that Watchfinder described a 60-step inspection and authentication process and a 24-month warranty; it also reported that eBay’s authentication service applied to qualifying watches priced at £1,500 or more in the UK. These are reported offerings, not universal guarantees: check current local policies and the individual listing before relying on them. Marie Claire’s June 2026 article.

Which should you choose?
Choose new if
- First ownership and a direct authorized-retailer relationship matter more than access to discontinued models.
- The applicable manufacturer warranty is important and the retailer can provide its terms in writing.
- You prefer to avoid uncertainty about prior wear, modification, or service history.
Choose pre-owned if
- The reference is discontinued, scarce, or available sooner on the secondary market.
- You have verified the seller, condition, provenance, service history, return terms, and warranty.
- The specific watch’s total cost and protections compare favorably with other credible offers.
If neither route meets those conditions, keep looking. A lower asking price does not by itself make a pre-owned watch a better buy, and buying new does not guarantee a particular resale outcome.
