Start with what you want the watch to do: choose the Oyster Perpetual for a simple time-only watch, the Datejust for a date and more styling choices, the Explorer for a high-contrast everyday dial, or the GMT-Master II if you will use a second time zone. Then narrow your choice by published case size, material, dial, and bracelet—and try the likely sizes on your wrist. Case diameter alone cannot predict fit.
Compare the four models by what you need
These are Rolex’s published descriptions, not results of an independent comparative test. Model catalogs can vary by market and change; confirm the exact configuration and reference in your market with Rolex or an Official Rolex Jeweller.

|---|---|---|---|
| Oyster Perpetual | A straightforward, time-only watch | 28, 31, 34, 36, and 41 mm | Three central hands, Oyster case, Oystersteel or 18 kt gold, and a range of dials. Rolex lists calibre 3230 in the 36 and 41 mm models. |

Choose the Oyster Perpetual for time only
The Oyster Perpetual keeps the display to three central hands, with no date or second-time-zone complication. Its five published sizes span a wider range than the other models covered here. Compare the available dial and material choices, then decide which size looks and feels right on your wrist. Rolex describes Oystersteel and 18 kt gold options; the exact offering depends on the model configuration.

Choose the Datejust if you want a date and styling flexibility
The Datejust adds a date display at 3 o’clock, magnified by a Cyclops lens. Its choice of bezel treatments and bracelet configurations gives you more visual variables to decide between than the time-only Oyster Perpetual. For Datejust 36 and 41, Rolex describes Oyster and Jubilee bracelet options; Datejust 31 also has a President configuration in the newsroom description.
Rolex’s Datejust newsroom page describes the sizes, date display, bezels, and bracelets.
Choose the Explorer for dial legibility and a restrained look
The Explorer’s black dial uses large 3, 6, and 9 numerals and a Chromalight display. Rolex describes its Oyster case and bracelet, Oystersteel construction, and 100 m water-resistance rating. Those specifications and the high-contrast layout may suit someone who values a clear, straightforward dial; they do not establish that the watch fits every wrist or activity.
Rolex lists the Explorer in 36 and 40 mm in its features page and describes the model in its newsroom page.

Choose the GMT-Master II only if you will use its second-time-zone display
The GMT-Master II has an arrow-tipped 24-hour hand and an independently adjustable local-hour hand. Set the local hour for where you are while leaving the reference time on the 24-hour hand; rotating the bezel lets that hand indicate an alternative time zone. The bezel changes the time-zone reading, not the movement’s local-time setting.
Rolex describes the model as designed to display two time zones simultaneously. The reviewed Oystersteel example is 40 mm, has a 100 m water-resistance rating, and is available in the described Oyster or Jubilee bracelet options. Verify these details against the particular reference you are considering.

What size Rolex should you get?
Use the published diameter to narrow down what to try, not as a wrist-size rule. The reviewed Rolex pages provide case diameters but do not establish an individualized wrist-circumference formula or a consistent comparison of lug-to-lug length and thickness. A 36 mm watch and a 40 mm watch can also wear differently because diameter does not describe every dimension or how the case and bracelet meet your wrist.
- Try the likely size and its neighbor. For example, compare the Explorer 36 and 40 mm, or two available Oyster Perpetual sizes that appeal to you.
- Look from above and from the side. Check whether the watch’s case and lugs sit comfortably rather than relying on the diameter number alone.
- Check the bracelet on your wrist. Assess comfort and where the clasp rests; the bracelet contributes to the fit as well as the case.
- Repeat the check with the exact configuration. A different reference, bracelet, or material can change the watch you are assessing.
These are practical try-on steps, not a Rolex-published sizing formula. If you cannot try a watch on, the available diameter alone is not enough to predict how it will fit you.

Bracelets
Rolex describes the Oyster as a three-piece-link bracelet and the Jubilee as a five-piece-link bracelet. Datejust configurations described in the reviewed sources include both on 36 and 41 mm models, while Datejust 31 also has a President option. Choose by appearance and on-wrist comfort rather than assuming one style is universally better.
