Compare specific references that serve the same purpose, then weigh their movements, construction, testing standards, warranty, service access, local price and the kind of recognition you value. A certification or prestige reputation can inform a choice, but neither is a universal measure of which watch is best.
Start with the watch, not the brand
A dive watch and a dress watch are built for different jobs. So are a simple time-and-date model and a chronograph or calendar complication. Comparing logos alone can obscure the differences that matter in daily use and ownership.

Choose two or more exact references in the same general category. Compare the configurations actually available to you: case and bracelet or strap materials, dimensions, functions, water resistance, movement type and published power reserve. Specifications can vary within a brand and change between references, so confirm details on the official model pages.

Rolex’s Submariner is one example of a sports-watch comparison. Rolex identifies calibre 3230 in the Submariner and calibre 3235 in the Submariner Date on its Submariner models page. That does not make either reference a direct match for every other luxury watch; it gives you a concrete model to compare with watches designed for similar use.

What “quality” means in a watch comparison
Quality is not a single specification. Consider how the watch is made and finished, how it performs its intended functions, how it is tested, and whether the maker can support it over time. A more complicated movement may cost more to service without being a better fit for someone who wants a straightforward everyday watch.
Read certification criteria by scope
Brand standards describe defined tests and tolerances; they are not automatically comparable rankings. Rolex says its Superlative Chronometer designation adds Rolex’s own final controls to official COSC movement certification. For the current Submariner models, Rolex states a finished-watch rate deviation between −2 and +2 seconds per day. These are Rolex’s published criteria, not an independent judgment that Rolex watches outperform every competitor. See the Rolex guarantee and Submariner model information.
Patek Philippe says its Seal applies to the complete watch, including the movement and external components. Its current Seal page gives a precision deviation of no more than −1/+2 seconds per 24 hours. That scope differs from Rolex’s described controls; the figures should not be treated as a universal head-to-head verdict. Patek Philippe also sets different rate-accuracy standards for certain caliber sizes and tourbillon watches in its 2024 announcement, so the Seal’s precision figure should not be flattened into a claim about every individual model. See the Patek Philippe Seal and its 2024 Watches and Wonders announcement.

Compare the whole specification
For each reference, check the case, crystal, bracelet or strap, clasp, water resistance and movement functions alongside any certification. These features answer practical questions: whether the watch suits your routine, what it can do, and what trade-offs you accept in size, material or complexity. A brand’s general reputation cannot substitute for those model-level details.
Compare warranty and service on their actual terms
Warranty length matters, but so do the qualifying purchase channel, acquisition date, exclusions and documentation. The published examples below are not interchangeable promises: verify the current terms for the particular watch and your location before buying.
| Brand | Published warranty example | Key qualification |
|---|---|---|
| Rolex | Five-year international guarantee | For qualifying new watches purchased through Official Rolex Retailers; exclusions and documentation requirements apply. Rolex guarantee terms. |
| Patek Philippe | Five-year international warranty for new watches sold from May 1, 2024 | Applies to new watches sold from that date, as stated in Patek Philippe’s announcement. 2024 announcement. |
| Audemars Piguet | Extension from two to five years for eligible watches | Hi-Care describes eligibility for watches initially acquired through AP’s official network in 2024, 2025 or 2026. Check the live programme terms and geographic applicability. AP Hi-Care programme. |
Service is part of the ownership comparison, particularly for complicated movements. Patek Philippe publishes maximum public service prices in Swiss francs, excluding tax, by movement category; grand complications are quoted on request. Its service-cost page is useful for understanding the categories, but those figures are not a cross-brand or worldwide price list. Patek Philippe also cautions that warranty expires after unauthorized third-party intervention.
Before choosing, find out where authorized service is available to you, what the stated service charges cover, and whether a particular intervention could affect the warranty. Do not assume service costs or access are identical across brands or models.
How to compare price without a misleading brand ranking
There is no useful universal answer to which luxury brand is cheapest or most expensive. A fair comparison needs a country, date, exact references, materials and the same price basis. Taxes, local availability and whether a watch is new or pre-owned can change the result.
Compare the local price of the exact configurations you are considering, then account for ownership costs such as service. If one reference is unavailable at retail and another is being compared at a secondary-market asking price, make that distinction explicit rather than treating the numbers as equivalent. Prices and availability are volatile; verify current local listings and official specifications before making a decision.
Prestige and resale are separate from quality
Prestige depends on the audience and on your own preferences. One buyer may value broad recognition; another may prefer a less conspicuous design, a particular complication or a maker’s approach to watchmaking. There is no official prestige score that settles the question of which brand is superior.
Resale is a separate, reference- and market-dependent issue. It is not guaranteed, and a brand-level claim that one maker “holds value best” needs comparable model-level data, a defined market and date, and a clear treatment of condition and transaction costs. Without those, treat resale expectations as uncertain rather than as a reason to buy.

Quick Recap
A practical way to choose between references
- Define the use. Decide whether you want a dress, everyday, travel, diving or chronograph watch, or a particular complication.
- Select like-for-like models. Write down exact references and configurations rather than comparing brand names in the abstract.
- Compare the specifications. Note movement type and functions, materials, water resistance, finishing, bracelet or strap, and the maker’s stated testing criteria.
- Check ownership terms. Confirm the warranty for the watch’s purchase date and channel, local authorized service access and published service-cost information.
- Compare prices in one market. Use the same country, date and price basis, and distinguish new retail from pre-owned condition and pricing.
- Make prestige personal. Decide whose recognition matters to you, if anyone’s, and do not treat reputation or possible resale as proof of better quality.
