A strap can match the lug width yet still be too thick to pass beneath the bars. “NATO” on a product label alone does not guarantee a fit.
Start with the attachment
Fixed bars cannot be removed like ordinary spring bars, so a conventional two-piece strap will not attach unless the watch has a documented adapter or watch-specific attachment. Look for a strap made to thread or wrap around the bars, such as a single-pass, multi-pass, open-ended, or RAF-style design. Check the maker’s description and installation instructions; names for strap styles do not by themselves establish compatibility.

Construction matters. A single-pass strap has one layer beneath the watch, while a traditional multi-pass design adds a retaining section. Measure width, then check clearance
Match the strap width to the watch
Measure the gap where the strap meets the case and choose a strap of the same width. Esprit Nato recommends measuring to the nearest millimetre and matching strap width to lug width. Do not estimate from the watch’s overall case size. Esprit Nato’s strap FAQ

Make sure the strap can pass beneath the bars
Check the space between the case and bars against the strap’s thickness. The strap needs to pass through without bunching and sit as intended; correct width does not guarantee that it will. Z.A. Strap Company specifies at least 3 mm clearance for its FXD-style fixed-bar system. That figure is specific to that system, not a universal clearance requirement for fixed-lug watches. Z.A. Check the route and any spring bars
Confirm that the strap’s attachment method suits the actual hardware on your watch. Some watches that look suitable for a pass-through strap have removable spring bars; others have bars integral to the case. VAER describes its pass-through straps as single pieces that slide through spring bars, but those instructions describe VAER watches and should not be assumed to apply to every fixed-bar design. If your watch has removable spring bars, inspect their condition: a one-piece strap puts more tension on them. Esprit Nato advises security bars for solid lugs and standard bars for drilled lugs; it warns that removing standard bars from non-drilled lugs can be difficult and risks damage. Choose length and hardware for your use
If you intend to wear the watch over a wetsuit, check the strap’s usable length and the manufacturer’s stated intended use. VAER says its own nylon bands have extra length for wetsuit wear; that is a product-specific claim, not a guarantee about nylon straps generally. When comparing products, a useful search phrase is “single-pass nylon watch strap.” Before ordering, verify the individual strap’s width, thickness, length, hardware, and fixed-bar compatibility notes.
