Tudor says the US Navy adopted its diving watches in 1958 and that SEAL teams used Tudor watches from their commissioning in 1962 through the 1980s.
What the Navy SEAL connection actually means
Tudor’s current description of the black Pelagos FXD connects it to historical US Navy use. The brand says its watches were issued to US Navy divers beginning in 1958 and famously used by SEAL teams from 1962, when those teams were commissioned, into the 1980s. Tudor describes the contemporary black FXD as a tribute to that history. Tudor’s black Pelagos FXD product page

That is a historical inspiration claim, not evidence that the current watch is standard-issue equipment. It also does not prove that a particular vintage Tudor belonged to a SEAL. Tudor notes that Navy watches could be sterile or marked at unit level, rather than using one consolidated marking system across the force; appearance alone may not establish an individual watch’s service history.

FXD refers to the fixed strap bars machined into the case. Rather than using conventional removable spring bars, the watch has integrated bars intended to provide a robust strap attachment. This affects everyday use: a replacement strap must be compatible with a fixed-bar case, and the attachment arrangement for the exact variant should be checked before buying.

The black US Navy-inspired watch is not the blue French Navy collaboration
Pelagos FXD refers to distinct variants with different histories and purposes. The black model carries Tudor’s US Navy tribute story. The original blue Pelagos FXD was developed with the French Navy’s combat swimmers, Commando Hubert, for underwater navigation. Tudor says the French collaboration resumed in 2021 after historic supply beginning in the 1950s; the brand’s history page dates its official supplier status to 1961, while the French Navy boutique describes supply to Marine nationale units from 1956 into the 2000s. Those dates are accounts from their respective publishers, not a single uniform timeline. Tudor’s history page · French Navy boutique
Tudor describes the blue watch as a technical model developed with Commando Hubert to meet specifications for underwater navigation. That is a separate collaboration from the black model’s US Navy historical inspiration. Tudor’s blue Pelagos FXD product page

How the blue FXD’s bezel supports underwater navigation
For the French Navy model, the timing bezel serves a specific navigation routine. Divers can follow a planned underwater route without surfacing: they swim straight sections at a steady speed for set times, using a magnetic compass, and begin a new countdown after each course change. Tudor says the bidirectional bezel, marked from 60 down to 0, helps set and monitor those intervals. Its broad ring is designed to be easier to grip while wearing neoprene gloves.

Tudor says the original blue FXD’s bidirectional retrograde bezel does not correspond to ISO 6425:2018’s divers’ watch standard because it is designed for that underwater-navigation method. The black US Navy-inspired model page instead describes a unidirectional 60-minute bezel that corresponds to the standard. Tudor’s black Pelagos FXD product page
