How to Choose a Swiss Watch That Holds Its Value

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

No Swiss watch is guaranteed to hold or increase its price. To reduce resale risk, compare the exact reference and configuration, avoid overpaying, verify authenticity and condition, preserve its documents, and understand what it may cost to sell. Choose a watch you genuinely want to wear; treat resale value as an uncertain outcome, not an investment promise.

What “holds its value” really means

A watch’s resale outcome depends on the specific reference and configuration, what you paid, its condition and originality, and the costs involved in selling it. A dealer’s asking price is not proof that a buyer paid that amount. Where possible, compare recent completed transactions for the same reference and configuration, and account for differences in condition, location, fees and timing.

There is no reliable, comprehensive current dataset here that supports ranking Swiss watch references by returns or predicting a resale percentage. Even Patek Philippe says it cannot provide an individual watch’s current resale value and directs owners to a specialist dealer or auction house. Patek Philippe’s authenticity FAQ explains its guidance on valuation and documentation.

How to compare watches before buying

Start with the exact reference

Compare like with like: reference, size, material, dial, bracelet and other configuration details. Brand reputation alone does not establish how a particular watch will resell. Look for completed sales rather than relying on current listings, and note whether the available examples are genuinely comparable in condition and completeness.

Work out your real purchase and exit costs

Compare the total cost of buying new, buying through a brand-certified pre-owned programme where available, or purchasing from an independent specialist. Include applicable taxes, any immediate service needs and the likely difference between a dealer’s retail asking price and the amount a dealer might offer to buy the watch. Before committing, ask a specialist dealer or auction house about indicative value and selling terms.

A brand-backed authentication or guarantee can define what a buyer receives, but it does not establish a resale premium or future price.

Make wearability part of the decision

Consider whether the size, material, dial and bracelet suit your preferences and how you will use the watch. Rolex, for example, describes its collection as offering different materials, dials, bracelets and sizes; those options do not amount to a resale forecast. Buy for the watch you want to wear, rather than assuming a popular category will outperform.

How to check authenticity, originality and condition

Verify the seller and the watch

Ask what was inspected, whether the components are genuine, whether the watch has been modified, and whether the seller will put those representations in writing. For a watch from a brand other than Rolex, check that brand’s own warranty and service terms. If the seller’s claims cannot be verified, seek an assessment from a qualified independent watchmaker or specialist before buying.

For a new Rolex, the company says genuine watches are sold exclusively through Official Retailers. A qualifying new purchase comes with a five-year international guarantee, provided the Official Retailer completes the guarantee card; the guarantee excludes watches materially modified with non-genuine Rolex parts. See Rolex’s purchasing guidance and guarantee terms.

Get a written condition report and service history

Request clear photographs and a written description of the case, dial, hands, bracelet and movement condition, along with dated, itemized service records. Ask whether parts have been replaced or the watch modified, and whether any work was performed by the brand or an independent watchmaker. A recent service or an unpolished case is not evidence of a fixed resale uplift; assess the actual watch and its documentation.

Rolex describes its service process as including a watchmaker’s assessment, technical checks and a water-resistance test. Those checks are useful context for evaluating a Rolex, but they do not predict its sale price. Rolex’s servicing procedure describes the brand’s process.

Understand what a precious-metal hallmark proves

Swiss official control and hallmarking apply to precious-metal watch cases in Switzerland regardless of origin. A hallmark can indicate that the case underwent the relevant metal control; it does not authenticate the movement, dial or complete watch, and it says nothing about future resale value. The Swiss Federal Office for Customs and Border Security explains the scope of this control.

Do box, papers and service records matter?

Keep the original documents and any service invoices. Check that reference and serial details are consistent across the watch, documents and seller’s account, but do not publish sensitive serial numbers. Documentation can support the watch’s history; it cannot by itself establish authenticity or a future price.

Patek Philippe says its Certificate of Origin identifies the watch through its movement, case and reference numbers, and that the original certificate cannot be reissued. For eligible older watches, the brand offers a separate Extract from the Archives, which is not a replacement certificate. It is available only when the first sale was more than ten years before the request. See the brand’s watch authenticity FAQ and Extract from the Archives FAQ.

New versus certified pre-owned: what the terms establish

New Rolex from an Official Retailer

For qualifying new purchases, Rolex states that its Official Retailers provide a five-year international guarantee and complete the guarantee card. The guarantee excludes watches materially modified with non-genuine Rolex parts. These are channel and warranty terms, not evidence of future resale performance. Rolex’s buying guidance and guarantee page set out the details.

Rolex Certified Pre-Owned

Rolex’s Certified Pre-Owned programme covers previously worn Rolex watches at least two years old, sold through participating Official Retailers. Rolex says programme watches are authenticated and fully serviced, and receive a two-year international guarantee from the programme purchase date. This offers a defined brand-backed purchase route; it does not show that a certified watch will retain a particular share of its price. Check Rolex’s programme terms.

Other brands and independent sellers

Do not assume Rolex’s retailer, authentication or guarantee rules apply to another brand. Check the relevant manufacturer’s terms and independently verify claims that the seller cannot substantiate.

A practical pre-purchase checklist

  • Record the exact reference and configuration; compare it with genuinely similar watches.
  • Separate completed sale prices from asking prices, and note differences in condition and transaction costs.
  • Compare total purchase cost across the available buying routes, including taxes and likely service needs.
  • Ask for written statements about authenticity, originality, modifications and condition.
  • Request dated, itemized service records and keep the original documents.
  • Check that identifying details are consistent without sharing sensitive serial numbers publicly.
  • Ask a specialist dealer or auction house about likely selling terms before purchase if resale is a priority.
  • Choose a watch whose size, materials and design you will actually enjoy wearing.
