A second time zone can help with travel; a moon-phase display can make the night sky part of the dial; a minute repeater can sound the time on demand. Compare each option by usefulness or personal appeal, legibility, setting and correction burden, and how its display fits the watch.
In watchmaking, a “complication” is a function beyond basic time display. What counts as unusual depends on the wearer: a moon phase may be familiar to a collector but novel to a first-time buyer, while an equation of time or sky chart is more specialized.

Start with what you want the watch to do
Before comparing names, decide whether you want practical information, an indication of an astronomical cycle, a way to measure elapsed time, or a mechanical display that is enjoyable to operate or hear. More functions do not automatically make a watch better suited to you.
Recommended Free Tools
- Practical: a second time zone, world time, calendar, or chronograph.
- Astronomical: a moon phase, equation of time, or sky chart.
- Mechanical or sensory: a flyback chronograph or minute repeater.
- Cultural or unconventional: a Chinese calendar or calendar-week display.
For each candidate, ask whether you will use the indication, enjoy looking at it, or value the mechanism even if you rarely need the information.

What unusual complications show you
Calendar: how much date correction you want to do
A simple date display needs manual correction when a month has fewer than 31 days. Calendar labels describe different levels of automation, not interchangeable features.
- Full calendar: shows calendar information but needs correction after months shorter than 31 days, according to Blancpain’s explanation.
- Annual calendar: accounts for month lengths except February, so Blancpain says its mechanism needs correction at February’s end.
- Perpetual calendar: accounts for varying month lengths and leap years. The exact behavior around century years depends on the particular design.
A perpetual calendar’s mechanical memory can be part of the appeal as well as a practical convenience. Audemars Piguet Heritage and Museum Director Sébastian Vivas describes a cam that “reproduces four-year cycles.” That explanation concerns the mechanism; check the exact watch’s instructions for its setting and correction procedure.
Moon phase: the lunar cycle on the dial
A moon-phase display indicates the moon’s phase as seen from Earth. Its appeal may be visual, astronomical, or both. Accuracy and correction intervals vary by mechanism, so do not assume that one maker’s figure applies to another watch.
IWC says the moon-phase display in its described perpetual-calendar mechanism deviates from the actual lunar phase by one day after 577.5 years. That is a specific IWC claim, not a general accuracy standard for moon-phase watches. Patek Philippe says its own displays require minimal adjustment over decades; consult the relevant model’s specifications for the claim that applies to a watch you are considering.

Equation of time: civil time versus solar time
An equation-of-time indication shows the difference between mean civil time and true solar time. These are not the same as a moon phase: one represents a difference between two ways of expressing time, while the other tracks the moon’s visible phase.
Blancpain describes the difference as varying from +16 to -14 minutes. This is the range given in Blancpain’s explanation, not a universal specification for every equation-of-time display.
Second time zone and travel time: home and local time
A second-time-zone display can let you read home and local time together. Some mechanisms are designed to make changing local time quick, but controls and adjustment behavior vary by model. Check whether the candidate moves a local-time hand independently and whether it provides a day/night indication.

A world timer presents multiple city or time-zone readings on one watch. Patek Philippe says its World Time watches show the time in at least 24 cities and their time zones simultaneously. Treat that as the maker’s description of its collection, not a specification that applies to all world timers.

Chronograph and flyback: measure elapsed time
A chronograph measures elapsed time while the watch continues to display the time of day. A flyback chronograph adds a one-press action to stop, reset, and restart the measurement, as Breguet describes it. Consider whether you want to time events often enough to value the controls and extra dial information.
Minute repeater: hear the time
A minute repeater sounds the time on demand using hammers and gongs. Breguet calls it a complication that “makes time audible.” The sound is not a simple add-on: Breguet notes that its quality depends on the acoustic behavior of the case and mechanism. If the sound is central to the choice, assess the particular watch rather than judging by the complication’s name alone.
Specialized displays: sky charts and alternative calendars
Some watches display a sky chart or track less familiar lunar cycles, such as draconic and anomalistic cycles. Other examples include a Chinese calendar and a calendar-week display. These may suit someone drawn to astronomy, cultural calendars, or unconventional dial information, but their value depends on whether the display is meaningful and understandable to that wearer.

- Identify the function. State what you want to see, measure, or hear, and whether the appeal is practical, aesthetic, astronomical, or mechanical.
- Decide how often you will use it. A travel display has different value to a frequent traveler than to someone who rarely changes time zones. A calendar’s automation matters more if you rely on the date every day.
- Read the dial as you would wear it. Check whether you can understand the added indication quickly and whether it competes with the main time display. Breguet identifies legibility as a design consideration for astronomical functions.
- Inspect the controls and setting process. Find the maker’s instructions for the exact reference. Calendar and astronomical complications may have specific procedures; there is no safe universal adjustment sequence for every model.
- Check correction and accuracy claims. Ask what the stated figure applies to, how often an indication needs correction, and whether the claim is specific to the movement or model.
- Assess the whole watch. Consider dial layout and case proportions alongside the function. Fit is personal, and there is no universal case-size recommendation for an unusual complication.
- Compare ownership terms for exact references. Check current price, dimensions, warranty, and service terms for the watches you are considering. These depend on the specific model and market.
Use the maker’s instructions before setting or correcting it
Complications can have model-specific operating rules. Before buying, locate the instruction manual and confirm how the function is set, switched, or corrected, what the controls do, and whether the maker specifies times when adjustment should be avoided. Do not apply a setting procedure from another watch just because it has the same complication name.
This matters especially when the display combines several calendar or astronomical indications. A watch can be easy to read but demanding to set; another may need little routine correction but require careful handling when it does. The manual for the exact reference is the appropriate guide.
Which complication is the best fit?
- Choose a second time zone if you want home and local time available together, and verify how local time is changed.
- Choose a world timer if you want several city or time-zone readings visible at once; check how the particular model represents cities and time zones.
- Choose a calendar if date information matters to your routine. Decide how much manual correction you are willing to handle before choosing between simple, full, annual, and perpetual calendars.
- Choose a moon phase or equation of time if an astronomical indication is the point of the watch. They show different things, so choose the phenomenon you actually want to see.
- Choose a chronograph or flyback if you will measure elapsed time and value the additional controls.
- Choose a minute repeater if hearing the time and the mechanical sound are central to the appeal.
- Choose a sky chart or alternative calendar if its specific information or cultural significance is meaningful to you—not simply because it is rare.
What manufacturer figures can—and cannot—tell you
Manufacturer explainers are useful for understanding how a maker’s own mechanisms and collections work. Their numbers should be read within that context, not treated as neutral comparisons across all watches. For example, IWC says its Kurt Klaus perpetual calendar, introduced in the Da Vinci in 1985, comprises about 80 parts; that figure describes IWC’s mechanism, not perpetual calendars generally.

Likewise, published accuracy claims for a moon phase or correction schedules for a calendar belong to the mechanism or model the maker describes. For a purchase decision, verify the current specifications and instructions for the exact reference. Price, service cost, water resistance, movement type, and service interval also require model-level information; they cannot be inferred from the complication alone.
